Updated on January 7, 2013

Crystal healing is an alternative therapy method that has been used by many cultures throughout history. It is a holistic therapy so works on all levels of being, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
Crystals have the ability to hold and transmit energy. This energy can then be released into other objects or people to heal by interacting with and rebalancing our electro-magnetic energy fields. By absorbing negative energy and focusing and directing energy crystals can be used to help with a vast number of issues such as stress, depression, circulation, insomnia and sadness.

Polished hematite

Each crystal has it's own natural vibrations and is known to have certain properties that are particularly useful for healing or help certain problems, conditions or body parts. For example hematite has be long associated with blood and is used to treat circulatory problems, anaemia and issues that affect the kidneys.
By learning about each crystals unique properties related to it's colour, shape and mineral content it becomes possible to choose the ones most appropriate to help in any given situation.
Crystals can be calming or energising as well as stimulate or sedate over-active organs or processes. Some crystals heal quickly and can be simply placed over the problem area such as using lapis lazuli, amethyst or amber to ease a headache. Other crystals are slower acting and may need to worn or carried with you for a period of time.

Either natural or polished crystals can be used for healing though polished stones are generally more hard wearing.

The majority of crystals need to be cleansed to clear them of the negative vibrations and energy that they absorb during healing. A few crystals such as citrine and kyanite never need cleansing and clear quartz and carnelian can be used to cleanse other crystals.
Crystals can be cleanse in several ways though some are more suitable than others depending on the type of crystal. Crystals can be cleansed by holding them under running water or immersing them in sea water,. A simple method of cleansing that can be easily performed anywhere is to leave your stones in the light of the sun or moon for a few hours. Keeping a carnelian crystal in with others will cleanse all the stones, as will placing them on a piece of clear quartz. This methods are idea for more delicate stones than may be damaged easily by running water or grains of salt.

They can also be worn as jewellery or carried in your bag or pocket wherever you go. Place crystals around your house to attract their healing and positive energies. This can be particularly useful for cleansing electromagnetic smog given off my electric devices and geopathic stress. crystals can also be placed in certain areas of a house to attract luck, love, good fortune and wealth.

Another method used in crystal healing is called crystal grids or layouts. This method means enables the healer to use many crystals at once. The crystals are placed on and/or around you in specific shapes to create an energy field.

An example of a crystal layout to alleviate stress is to lay eight amethyst points around your body, one between your feet, one above your head, one on each side of your neck, two at your hips and two at your ankles. Close your eyes and relax laid within the stones for 10 - 20 minutes.
