Angelica - The Herb with the Medicinal and Magical Properties
The herb Angelica has been used for thousands of years to cure many diseases and helped alleviate the symptoms of illness. Throughout history herbs have been grown for food and to add taste and substance to our diets.
But there are many more uses for all types of herbs. Medicine today is a mixture of chemical properties, but did you know that the majority of our tablets are made from herbs? Wise women or Witches have been known to use herbs for many magical rituals. Here I will be explaining how to grow Angelica, and show you how to use it for helping to relieve symptoms. And there is also an indepth look at how we can use angelica in herbal magic.
Angelica can grow quite tall, between three and seven feet high, so it is a good idea to only grow this if you have a garden. It may be grown on a balcony but only if you have enough space. To seed this plant, you must start off with fresh seeds. Keep them in water for three nights preferably around the full moon, as we are covering the magical properties of the plant too.
Make sure you seed them in Spring and transplant them in Autumn. Place the little plants in a circle approximately one metre or yard away from each other. Remember that angelica has to be placed in a position so that it can keep warm. A humid climate is preferable to grow properly.
Medicinal Properties of Angelica
Always be careful when cutting the plant for use in medicine. And make sure that you talk to your Doctor beforehand to make sure that each and every herb you use will not interefere with any medicines that you already take. There are many herbs that can be downright dangerous if you take them with certain medications such as heart medicine.
The parts of angelica that can be used are the rootstock, roots and seeds. These can be gathered and used in the second year of growth. They are aromatic and great for digestion. But be careful, as angelica can be both a stimulant in small doses, and a depressive in a higher dose.
- Angelica is good for stimulating the appetite after an illness.
- Coughs can be soothed by its expectorant properties.
- Stomach problems such as wind, indigestion, cramps and spasms.
- Urinary tract infections.
- Menstrual problems.
- Fever can be helped by angelica because of its diaphoretic properties. (sweating)
Angelica can also be used in a poltice to alleviate athlete's foot, rheumatism, itching and when gargled can help to stop a sore throat.
You can use angelica for making your bath a more relaxing experience. Just place the infusion into the bath, or preferably place the plant into a small cloth bag and hang it from the side of the bath so that it is just below the water line.
If you are diabetic please do not use Angelica as it produces sugar in the urine.
Introduction to Herbs for Magical Use
Magical Properties of Angelica
For magic, gather the roots of angelica in September or October. Wait for a West Wind to blow and dry them in the sun.
To prepare an elixir, add a small amount of roots, 40g or 1oz of sugar, 100g or 3.5 ounces of alcohol, and enough water, around a pint or half a litre. Collect the first fruit of the season that you have grown in your garden and add it to the elixir. Then let it steep for ten days.
When you need calm or temperance in your life, say an incantation over the liquid. This is called the ritual of Calling the Powers. There are many ways that you can do this. But it is best if you make up your own Prayer or Incantation.
Before starting call to mind the reason why you have invoked the incantation. In this case it is for calm and tranquility. Make sure that you are comfortable. If you choose you can have a bath to cleanse yourself and your aura, but you can also just wash your hands to start with. Place the angelica elixir in front of you. Then its time to draw a circle around you.
This can be a real circle with salt and blessed water, or just an imaginary one using your hand to circle your body.
Hold the image in your mind. You can think of a waterfall, or maybe a lovely shady forest. When you have the image firmly in your head, then sit back and wait for the answer to come to you. This isn't difficult. You may see fire in the form of a candle. This is the elements way of telling you to use this. or maybe you will see water. If it is a candle, then place it in front of you and say the words:
Fire, you are here and I thank you. Please bring me peace and calm, so mote it be.
Just remember you have to make up the magical words. You can of course use a manual to learn the incantations, but the point is to really mean it. By using someone else's words you will be stilted and the meaning will not come through properly.
When you have finished, thank the element, in this case fire, and close the circle around you.
Thank you fire for your kindness fire, blessed be. Or:
Thank you fire for blessing this angelica, blessed be.
How to remove the circle
Place your hand once more on the ground and smooth away the circle, making sure that you open the circle the opposite way to closing it. Clockwise to close the circle, and anti-clockwise to open it.
In the video below you will find the full casting of a circle. This can be done if you are more familiar with the ways of magic. But the above casting of the circle is fine for beginners.

Elixir of Temperance
Once you have prepared the elixir of temperance, and have consecrated it for the first time by Calling the Powers, keep it in a protected place within your home away from outside influence. Then whenever you need to use it, just take a sip of the elixir and you will immediately feel the benefits of the magical angelica infusion.
