Jolie's Double Mastectomy Reassures Her Kids

Angelina Jolie, 37, lost her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who was also an actress, in 2007 to ovarian cancer. Her mother was 56 years old.

Angelina Jolie wanted to avoid dying from breast cancer. She wrote a New York Times op-ed called "My Medical Choice" and wrote that she wanted to give her six children reassurance that she would not die..

After learning that she had a gene that gave her an 87 percent rick of getting beast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, Angelina Jolie decided to have a double mastectomy.

She wrote: "I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a 'faulty' gene....Once I knew this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could."

A double mastectomy is a procedure to remove one or both breasts. Angeline Jolie's breast tissue was removed and she received temporary fillers at the Pink Lotus Breast Center in California. Her breast was later reconstructed.

Actress Christina Applegate also had a double mastectomy.

Breast cancer kills more women than any other cancer. Although the death rate is decreasing for women under 50 years old, there is no cure for breast cancer. Luckily, there are many breast cancer survivors.

Angelina Jolie chose to prevent breast cancer for her children and it is a good thing!
