Cancer and Vitamin D Insuffiency

Are autism or ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and cancer caused by a vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. For autism, read this first since it is also an introduction to vitamin D.

This is talking about not getting optimum levels of vitamin D. If you get vitamin D from sunlight that is free, there is no chance of getting too much.

You cannot compare vitamin D to other vitamins since vitamin D is not a vitamin. The body cannot produce a vitamin but the body does produce vitamin D when one gets enough sunlight.

Vitamin D is a neurosteroid hormone (click link and see for yourself) according to PubMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine). For thousands of years all mankind lived in Africa where they could get plenty of very bright sunlight. The above website linked to says::

Vitamin D is a seco-steroid hormone with multiple functions in the nervous system.

Numerous brain dysfunctions are linked to vitamin D deficits and/or dysfunctions of its receptors.

Vitamin D emerges as an important neurosteroid hormone in the brain, with a strong potential for age-specific applications in clinical nutrition.

Recent research on Vitamin D has shown that it does a lot more than previously known. They discovered vitamin D while researching a cure for rickets-- a terrible bone disease. So all the focus used to be on bones. One function they have recently found for vitamin D is that it helps the body get rid of toxins. There are more toxins now than ever before. Autism and cancer are both associated with toxins.

Treatment of Autism with Vitamin D

On the video below, Dr. Cannell explains that his testing showed that 25% of kids with autism have a dramatic improvement in autism with being given vitamin D, but the amounts need to be large enough. 50% of them have significant improvement and 25% of them show no improvement.

November 23, 2014 Addition

This comes from the U.S. National Library of Medicine. This article is Autism prevalence in the United States with respect to solar UV-B doses. It says:

Evidence is mounting that vitamin D deficiency is intimately involved in autism

Conclusion: This ecological study finds that autism prevalence among those aged 6–17 y in 2010 was significantly inversely correlated with solar UVB doses. Taken together, these results and other findings strongly implicate vitamin D deficiency as an important risk factor for developing autism. Maternal vitamin D deficiency appears to play an important role although we cannot discount a role of vitamin D deficiency in early life. Further studies should evaluate the UVB-vitamin D-autism hypothesis in both pregnant women and children with autism.

New Information, November 21, 2014

Article from Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) called Research by CHORI Scientists Indicates Causal Link between Vitamin D, Serotonin Synthesis and Autism: Dietary Interventions Will Have Relevance for Prevention and possibly for Treatment of Autism. It says:

February 26, 2014 - Oakland, CA – A new study by Rhonda Patrick, PhD and Bruce Ames, PhD of Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) demonstrates the impact that Vitamin D may have on social behavior associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Dr. Patrick and Dr. Ames show that serotonin, oxytocin, and vasopressin, three brain hormones that affect social behavior, are all activated by vitamin D hormone. Autism, which is characterized by abnormal social behavior, has previously been linked to low levels of serotonin in the brain and to low vitamin D levels, but no mechanism has linked the two until now.

The most recent National Health and Examination survey reports that greater than 70% of U.S. population does not meet this requirement and that adequate vitamin D levels have plummeted over the last couple of decades.

If you click on the in depth part of the article you find:

Maternal autoimmunity has been strongly associated with the development of autism during pregnancy, although no satisfactory explanation of this phenomenon has been put forward (130–132). Here we suggest a plausible mechanism for how low maternal vitamin D hormone may result in maternal autoimmunity and autism incidence.

Wikipedia did say (was removed) under Michael F Holick M.D. :

His scientific oeuvre increased awareness in the pediatric and medical communities regarding vitamin D deficiency pandemic,[8] and its role in causing not only metabolic bone disease, and osteoporosis in adults, but increasing risk of children and adults developing common deadly cancers, autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and heart disease,[9] as discussed in his review article[9]. [Note that a pandemic is a widespread epidemic]

Modern civilized people do not get as much sunlight as they used to. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a proposed revision to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5), which will be released in May 2013.

In the late 1800s, 90% of the children in Europe and North America had a terrible bone disease called rickets. Doctors told people to make sure that their child sunbathed a lot. That greatly helped. In 1922 while researching rickets, they discovered vitamin D and that was the cure for rickets. Or rickets was due to not enough vitamin D. Recently it has been found that people need a lot more vitamin D, than needed to prevent rickets, to prevent other diseases.

Several decades ago, iguanas were popular pets. They would jump and break their back. They stopped this by putting sunlamps in the cages. The problem with sunlight now is that it is free. So it is advertised as bad for you to create the billion dollar business of sunscreen, sunblock and dyes to make you look tan.

Moores Cancer Center proposes that cancer is a vitamin D deficiency just like rickets. Doctor of Public Health, Cedric Garland, says that ENOUGH (lifeguard levels) vitamin D will virtually eradicate breast cancer. Harvard says that according to a study done, other non-skin cancers are reduced by 77% with enough vitamin D. Most skin cancer is only cosmetic, not dangerous. Melanoma skin cancer is rare compared to breast cancer.

I am now adding the Dr.Oz video to this webpage. See The Power of Vitamin D. He says that 50% of Americans do not get enough vitamin D.

Autism and Vitamin D Deficiency

This article was written September 14, 2012. I have known about cancer and vitamin D for over 2 years now, but I just learned about autism and vitamin D. I already had an article about ways to help autism and how Jenny McCarthy cured her son's autism according to a doctor that she worked with.

Natural Health 365 says:

Low vitamin D levels will promote brain disorders

Vitamin D researcher Dr. John Cannell has noted a correlation between declining vitamin D levels and the rise in autism. Dr. Cannell believes vitamin D is central to brain development and enables glutathione (the master antioxidant) to naturally chelate heavy metals from our bodies.

A study, published in early 2013, discovered that kids who lived in states with the highest exposure to UVB rays [rays that create vitamin D] in the summer and fall had roughly half the number of children diagnosed with autism.

See Cure, Reverse or Recover from Autism on how to cure it after you get it. Ben Franklin, the scientist that discovered electricity, said "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." The first video below explains the importance of neurosteroid hormone vitamin D.

In addition to what is in the above article, doctors are also having success having kids also avoid eating GMO foods. One in 6 children have some type of neurodevelopmental disability. Learning and Developmental Disabilities says:

The number of American children with learning and developmental disabilities has been climbing over the past decade, reaching nearly one in six by 2008.[1] The increasing prevalence of autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] accounts for most of this change.

Note that this is beyond the scope of this article, but lack of vitamin D in the pregnant mothers may greatly contribute to ADHD.

Please note that at the bottom of this, it talks about the article Do Vaccines Kill Infants. A movie explains that kids without autism have a lot of mercury in their hair. Hair is made of dead cells the body is getting rid of. The kids with autism do not have much mercury in their hair. So it says that some children that cannot get rid of mercury quick enough, get autism. This article explains that the above is not genetic but a lack of vitamin D in the pregnant mother and in the child.

A couple took a 2 and a half year old son to a neurologist and 2 psychologists. They said that the son had autism and he was an autistic child. They used multiple treatments and saw a dramatic improvement in April/May of that year [2010].

Nearly all the symptoms on the list above had resolved. We assumed the improvements were due to diet but he started to go into the sun around that time. Our son slept well and spent many peaceful, happy and anxiety-free months during the spring and summer after turning three.

By December the son was so bad again that they put him into a hospital. The mother was talking about how autism seemed to be seasonal with spring and summer good months and the rest of the year bad months. She was told by a neurologist, with the authority of an Adolf Hitler, that autism was not seasonal. To make a long story short, the child was cured of autism with vitamin D. See the full story at: Autism Nightmare Overcome by Miraculous Vitamin D.

The above story by itself is known as anecdotal evidence and means nothing. It could have been something entirely different than autism like a brain tumor. It is important for pregnant mother to get enough vitamin D so child does not get autism. If pregnant take 49 minutes to watch the John Cannell M.D. video below.

But the above is how epidemiology works. Epidemiology looks at diseases among groups of people to determine if there are certain trends in common so that they can cure a disease. This is how they first learned about vitamin D and cancer since cancer was lower in people living closer to the equator. Dr Cedric Garland (mentioned above) was trained in epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Medical School.

Here is more epidemiology from the book, Vitamin D: Is This the Miracle Vitamin? The bottom of this article has it where you can buy this book from It says:

But there were more clues. Autism is more prevalent [widespread] the further north or south of the tropics that you go. It’s more common in urban areas, or those with cloudier skies. In short, the distribution of autism across the planet seems to match the patterns of cancer alluded to in the first chapter and themselves now believed to be vitamin D related.

Here is what the U.S National Library of Medicine (part of the NIH-- National Institutes of Health) (also called PubMed) says about autism and vitamin D in September 2012 (Hot Off the Press):

Vitamin D deficiency--either during pregnancy or early childhood--may be an environmental trigger for ASD [autism spectrum disorder] in individuals genetically predisposed for the broad phenotype of autism. On the basis of the results of the present review, we argue for the recognition of this possibly important role of vitamin D in ASD, and for urgent research in the field.

Psychology Today has an April 2011 article called Autism and Vitamin D. It says:

In recent years we have been told to avoid the sun. Anyone reading women's magazines, in fact, will have been advised to put on sunscreen on face and hands "just in case" as those few moments walking from the car to the workplace or grocery store might be enough to cause aging and cancer cells to go nuts in our vulnerable skin.

We slather on sunscreen and sunblock, which for the most part completely blocks the UVB sun rays that increase our cancer protective vitamin D and allows in some cancer causing UVA - to me that sounds like a silly thing to do!

Could a lack of sunshine and suboptimal amounts of vitamin D be a possible cause of autism spectrum disease in our children?

2) Vitamin D is likely central to brain development as a key helper in neural development and neuroprotection. In addition, autism is likely mediated by inflammation, and vitamin D is a key player in anti-inflammatory processes. Also, vitamin D enables glutathione, the "master antioxidant," clear our system of free radicals, and glutathione also acts as a chelating agent to bind toxic heavy metals such as mercury, which kids with autism have a tough time clearing from their systems.

Note that the protocol for curing autism in that previous article that I wrote included using different methods to get rid of heavy metal toxicity. Also that article talks about vaccines since right after one Jenny McCarthy's son got autism. Before 2002 there was thimerosal in children vaccine that is 50% mercury.

December 12, 2012 (12/12/12) I just saw on Twitter that a mother has 2 sons that both have autism. So maybe you are thinking that it is hereditary. She also just beat breast cancer.

Read the article to see all 8 of the points about autism and vitamin D. Also the male to female ratio of autism is 4:1. Point 4 talks about how estrogen has many vitamin D enhancing properties. I read a lot of articles and the above Psychology Today article by Emily Deans M.D. is a superb article. She appears to be a great writer.

I learned about autism and vitamin D because I saw on Twitter where I have 40,000 followers that an investigative reporter had a new book on vitamin D-- Vitamin D: Is This the Miracle Vitamin (see below to buy). I said to myself that there are already 7 books on vitamin D from 7 doctors in the last 3 years so do we need another one. But when I looked it up, it talked about autism which I had never heard of associated with vitamin D.

Is Autism an Infectious Disease

Is it possible that some children catch autism from other kids with autism? Many Somali (in Africa) immigrants came to Sweden and Minnesota. Autism was appearing in children in much higher rates than in Somali. Could it be that they were catching it from American children? No. The scientists decided it was the the difference from vitamin D from sunlight. See The Vitamin D Deficiency Pandemic (widespread epidemic) to see what PubMed says about this.

Somali is right near the equator at a latitude of about 6 degrees while Minnesota that is right below Canada has a latitude of about 46 while Sweden has a latitude of about 69. This was discussed in Scientific American Magazine in an article called What If Vitamin D Deficiency Is a Cause of Autism? It says:

A few researchers are turning their attention to the sunshine vitamin as a culprit, prompted by the experience of immigrants that have moved from their equatorial country to two northern latitude locations.

As evidence of widespread vitamin D deficiency grows, some scientists are wondering whether the sunshine vitamin—once only considered important in bone health—may actually play a role in one of neurology's most vexing conditions: autism.

[under photo] HELP FROM THE SUN? Some researchers are turning their attention to the amount of vitamin D a mother and infant get to try to trace autism.

[From page 3 of article] And there is other evidence for a vitamin D link: Last November, Cornell University researchers published a study in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine showing that children in rainy (and therefore more overcast) counties of Oregon, Washington and California were two times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than their counterparts in drier parts of the state. "Our research is sufficiently suggestive of an environmental trigger for autism associated with precipitation, of which vitamin D deficiency is one possibility," says study co-author Michael Waldman, a professor of management and economics at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management.

Look at this webpage with an overview of Vitamin D and Autism called Vitamin D Wiki. It has a great chart showing the rise of autism in the United States of America. It says:

FACT: Many studies have shown an association of autism to many factors--
all of those factors are associated with low vitamin D.

Rickets and autism show similar urban/rural distribution rates.

Rickets is an accepted vitamin D-deficiency disease, and urban children have significantly higher rates of both diseases.[17]
Pregnant rural women and their children tend to be outside in the sunshine more their urban counterparts, and in urban settings, more air pollution blocks out UVB light, the wavelength that stimulates vitamin D production; poor air quality is directly correlated with autism[18] and with profoundly lower serum levels of vitamin D.[19]
It is also interesting to note that the Amish of Pennsylvania mostly rural farmers have extremely low rates of autism.[20]
According to Dr. Heng Wang, who treats Amish people in rural Ohio, their rate of autism is 1 in 1,500, compared to 1 in 166 nationally.[21]

I have an article How much Vitamin D Should You Take Daily. This is an important question. How much should you give to a newborn baby? This article tells how in Finland they gave 10,000 babies that were just born 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily for 2 years. It reduced the rate of type 1 diabetes by 80%.

I can keep at this all day showing you information about vitamin D and but we both have other things to do. Also I have the article: The Many Health Benefits of Sunbathing or Sunlight. It tells about getting vitamin D from sunlight and understanding the UV index that you can get daily to see how strong the sunlight is. Also I have a shorter article Cancer and the Power of Vitamin D. It has quotes (with links to the articles) from an article from Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Christiane Northrup M.D. on Oprah website and a video by Dr. Oz. The article: The Many Health Benefits of Enough Vitamin D covers diabetes, colds and the flu, arthritis and obesity pertaining to vitamin D.

Also make sure to read Do Vaccines Kill Infants. The thimerosal with mercury in it has not been in the infant vaccines since 2001, but it does have other things in it like aluminum. When you consume aluminum the body gets rid of it quickly but with injections it stays in there. It is needed so the vaccine can continue working. But when they gave injections of mercury to rats, the rats had cognitive problems.

Also it has a great free movie on it that may be pulled at any time since they are charging for people to see this movie. You can still donate after watching the movie if you want to. It has on it a female doctor that got vaccinations for her 3 kids-- 2 boys and a baby girl. The female doctor is sure that her girl had a slow reaction to the vaccine that killed her. But she did get a warning! Her boys were very healthy with no health problems. But then after getting vaccinations they would regularly have all sorts of different health problems.

Then there is the 15 year old girl who got the Gardisil vaccine against HPV so they do not get cervical cancer. Only 3 out of 100,000 people get cervical cancer so she had a much greater chance of getting hit by lightning. She had 2 strokes and her grades went from 4.0 (A+) to all 'F's. They became broke since she had to take $2,000 worth of medication per month beyond the medical insurance.
