Are You There?

Updated on December 10, 2008

Who is this Higher Power?

What should you call him(her)? How do you talk to a High Power? Maybe "hi it's...hmmm..me. How are you? thanks for helping me out. Do you know any good jokes, besides the ones you pull on me?"

Many of us come into recovery not knowing who or what "the power greater than ourselves is/are." Except for the drug of our choice, which has been a definite power stronger than ourselves. A lot of times we don't even know how to communicated with solid objects, let alone something more ethereal.

A Higher Power concept can be a hard subject to wrap your mind around. I know I see so many struggle, argue, and fuss over the subject. I've seen meetings turn into debates over this subject.

But I'm not so much interested in the debate as to hear other's thoughts and beliefs. I love hearing other people's ideologies, not so much theololgies. I'm not looking to turn this into a "Bible Thumping" post. I don't believe one person's beliefs are right and other's are wrong. Your beliefs and perspectives are your own, and I respect them all.

This is about who or what is a Higher Power? What makes a Higher Power? How do you talk to a Higher Power? Where does a Higher Power live? What is your Higher Power doing for you? These of course are just a few subjects on the matter, and feel free to expand your thoughts outside the parameters of my limited thinking. Lucky for me, my Higher Power excepts me even when my thinking is limited.

I just think this topic is so enlightening into the thoughts and hearts of others during meetings. I know it has made for some great meetings when no seems to have a topic and helps even those who normally don't participate often join in.

the higher power knows better than me and I can challenge and question all I want but in the end, he's going to put me on that road, that path he chooses for me

My higher power knows all and see's everything. I call him my Father. He is my Lord of light and truth and carries me through the darkest hours of my life. Without this higher power I call GOD..I would be dead in the cold hard ground.

Thank you for sharing your beliefs on what a Higher Power is to you. Many will not talk on such a public forum for fear of riddicule from the others out there in the blog-o-sphere. Again, thaanks for the share.

    Tom,

I sometimes have that feeling of being put on hold, but I know I'm not the only one.

I'm personally a deist and feel that God created the universe and we are here now.  I don't feel that he personally lends any hand in our day to day activities, literal miracles per se, speaks to us personally, or persuades revelation.  I feel God has more important things to do (such as creating other Universes) than to influence me, a mere human.

That's just me, I was raised Jewish, but i'm a deist now :) just makes more sense to me.

    Direxmd,

Great thoughts and beliefs. It sounds like being a deist is working well for you. I at times don't have my beliefs so well defined. I seem to retro-fit them on a daily basis. Thanks of sharing.

I do that as well St. James :) I just feel that if I can keep as much responsibility on my own shoulders and keep the "i'm the only one who can make my life better" attitude ingrained in me, then I will be more likely to obtain success and not evade responsibilty. That's just me though.

Thanks for the quality hub :)

Shouldering your own responibilties is definitely important, and keeping it real. There is a reason the saying "God helps those, who help themselves." is around. I think many people really need to look at that saying, and read it carefully.
