Baking Soda Uses For A Healthy Body

Updated on August 31, 2010

Safe, Effective and Cheap!

Baking soda, a.k.a. sodium bicarbonate, is one of nature's miracle substances as far as I am concerned.

Baking soda is environmentally-friendly, safe to use, really inexpensive and works great!

Baking soda has hundreds of uses, however this hub will focus on how it can help keep your body healthy.

This vital substance is so important to our health, that our own bodies make it!

Balance The Body's pH Level

The food and drinks we ingest tend to be mostly acidic, and our stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) is extremely acidic. Sodium bicarbonate is an alkaline substance, which helps balance our pH level. Normal pH level of our blood is between 7.35 - 7.45; this is just slightly above neutral on the pH scale. You can see on the image to the right, that gastric juice is very low on the pH scale and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is just over 9.

Our pancreas makes sodium bicarbonate to alkalize the chyme (food) after it leaves our stomach and enters the small intestine. A healthy body will keep the body in the right pH level. It is simple to test your own body's pH level to see if you're in the appropriate pH range. All you need is a pH testing kit and to test your urine with it.

Relieve Acid Reflux & Heartburn

If you are suffering from acid reflux or heartburn, the simple and cheap solution is baking soda. Just mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 8 ounces of water and sip.

Clear Up Acne Breakouts

Baking soda can be made into a paste with some water and used as a facial scrub. Alternatively you can mix some baking soda with your facial soap and still get the same benefits. Baking soda shrinks pimples and pores without irritating skin.

Treat Stings & Insect Bites

You can make a paste out of baking soda and water, to treat a sting by a bee, wasp, jellyfish or scorpion. Apply this generously to the affected are and wait for the stinging to cease. You can also use it to stop insects bites from itching.

Deodorize Your Body

Baking soda's common household use is to remove smells from refrigerators and laundry. Well, it can also be used to remove body odors! Just wet your underarms slightly, dab a cotton ball into some baking soda and brush onto your underarm skin. Wait for your underarms to dry before putting clothes on.

If you have strong odors on your hands from onions or anything smelly, just scrub hands with baking soda and some water.

Relieve Burns

Heat, wind and sunburns can be soothed with a baking soda paste. Mix baking soda and water and apply generously to the area until the burning sensation subsides.

Get Rid of Canker Sores

Using a baking soda paste, apply to the canker sore. This may sting a bit, but it will heal it. Alternatively you can swish with water and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda.

Soothe And Soften Skin

Soaking in a bath with 1 cup of baking soda will relieve skin irritations, including poison ivy ad rashes. Use 1/2 cup of baking soda for baby's bath to relieve diaper rash. Scrubbing skin with baking soda will exfoliate and revitalize your skin.  Epsom salt is another cheap product that is wonderful at keeping skin healthy.

Whiten Teeth & Freshen Breath

Add baking soda to your toothpaste to whiten teeth. Alternatively you can brush with just baking soda. To freshen breath, gargle with water and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda.
