About Pineapple

Latin Name : Ananas cosmosus

In India, Pineapple is called Ananas.

Pineapple belongs to the family Bromeliaceae. The plant grows in tropical regions, is drought resistant and a perennial. The flowers are borne on an inflorescence and once they bloom the individual fruitlets coalesce to form a composite or multiple fruit in the form of the pineapple we see. The individual fruitlets can be identified by the eyes seen on the skin of the pineapple.

The fruit is cylindrical in shape with a crown of spiny leaves and has a rough and scaly skin. The fibrous flesh inside is yellow in color and the pineapple can grow to around a foot long. It has a sweet to tart taste. The skin color may range from green to yellow to yellow orange.Interestingly, the pineapple is sweeter at the base as it has a larger sugar content concentrated there as compared to the crown.

Pineapple can be cultivated from the crown cutting on the fruit or from the many side shoots or suckers that are produced in the leaf axils of the main stem once the first fruit is produced.

Pineapples first originated in South America but are grown in Thailand, Philippines, India, China, Brazil, Mexico, USA which are among the more than 80 countries of the world that pineapple is grown in.

Pineapple does not ripen once picked. Hence, choose ones that are sweet smelling at the stem end. Avoid buying ones with a musty, sour or fermented smell.

Uses Of Pineapple

Pineapple is consumed in a variety of ways - fresh, juiced or canned in desserts, jams, jellies, yogurt, ice creams, fruit salads etc. The leaves provide a fiber which is used in furnishings wall papers etc.

This is a very useful hub. Your photos are exceptionally good, and I really have learned a lot. I first came into a lot of contact with pineapples when I lived in Taiwan in the 70s. My ex-wife's father used to grow them on the side of a hill. Now that I am in Thailand, I also see and eat a lot of pineapple. From past experience, pineapple and its juice especially if the pineapple is very ripe and sweet is a good laxative and will definitely keep you regular. Voted up and sharing with followers and on Facebook. Also Pinning.

Pretty thorough hub here on the benefits health wise of consuming pineapples, I don't like the canned type like Dole, and mainly because it isn't organic or raw from out of nature, but I do see the benefits of organic pineapples for sure and straight from off of the tree.

I wish that food manufactures wouldn't go screwing with nature and all in their processing plants and we wouldn't have to worry so much about being so selective when we went to purchase such food items today.

Anyway, thanks for writing this very useful, and informative article Rajan, in the United States things are slowly but surely improving in terms of overall health consciousness.

This is well researched and so informative! Hi Rajan! You work so hard on these hubs. I have a severe latex allergy and am allergic to all the papaya fruits: pineapple, plums, nectarines, peaches, apricots, and now I think Avocados. Being exposed to latex in the hospitals for 30 years (I was also a nurse in the AF), has given me a progressive allergic condition that is from Latex exposure from gloves, IV products, and hundreds of other latex products. I can't step in the hospital anymore. Some nurses I've known have died from anaphylaxic shock. I really miss pineapple and mangoes! Great Hub! It makes me want a pineapple!
