Benefits and Uses of Turmeric

Turmeric and medicine

Turmeric is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant in nature. It has many health benefits. These are as follows:

1) Aids digestion
Used as digestive bitter it cures gastrointestinal problems like constipation, stomach ulcers,Irritable Bowel Syndrome etc. Being carminative in nature it aids in gas and bloating reduction. Great cure for indigestion.

2)Liver tonic
Being cholagogue in nature turmeric stimulates bile flow from liver. Detoxifies liver. It protects liver from alcohol problems and excessive consumption of iron. Various liver diseases like jaundice, cirrhosis and hepatitis are cured and prevented.

3)Cures and prevents Cancer
Turmeric contains an important compound curcumin. This curcumin is antioxidant in nature is beneficial in curing, suppressing and preventing various types of cancers.

4) Atherosclerosis is prevented
Turmeric reduces LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels and prevents oxidation of LDL . LDL is " bad Cholesterol" responsible for clogging of arteries. Hence Atherosclerosis is prevented by turmeric.

5)Treatment of Osteoarthritis
Curcumin present in turmeric is anti-inflammatory reduced pains and irritation caused by osteoarthritis.

6)Relief in Menstrual Problems
As turmeric is antispasmodic in nature. It helps women who have menstrual cramps by reducing the cramping.

7)Curing Wounds
Being anti-bacterial and antiseptic it can be used for wounds. Not only it disinfects the wounds, it stops the bleeding by clotting the blood and aids in new skin/cell generation. Bacterial infection in wounds caused by bacteria staphylococcus, E.coli and bacillus is prevented. Another great thing about turmeric is you are relieved of pain as it analgesic.

8)Relief for Eye problems
Problems like cataract are caused oxidation of lenses. Turmeric is an antioxidant that reduces the oxidation leading to good eye health. Turmeric can be used for treatment of conjunctivitis and glaucoma

9)Cure for Skin problems
Turmeric protects and cures skin diseases like wounds, acne, psoriasis ,eczema and dermatitis. A balm of turmeric is very effective. Skin cancer is prevented

10)Alzheimer's disease is prevented
Turmeric removes the build up of plague amyloyd from brain thus the onset of Alzheimer's disease is prevented. Studies have shown people in India over 70 have less Alzheimer's disease problems compared to western counterparts. This is due to the fact there is heavy consumption of turmeric in foods.

11)Treatment for other problems
Turmeric is a blood purifier. Other problems like sore throat, Colitis, post-giardia are cured by turmeric intake

1)Turmeric is widely used as spice in food. It gives a vivid yellow color to the dishes. Add it in cereals, rice, chicken recipes, fish dishes and other curries.

Apply a thick paste of turmeric and water to face and body. Leave it for 30 minutes and then wash it with water. You will get a glowing , soft skin.

3)Fairness to the skin
If you want a fair glowing skin, regular use of turmeric will do it for you.

4)Removal of body hair
Add turmeric in bath water. Use regularly for removal of body hair.

5)Controls wrinkle and crease formation
Regular use of turmeric aids in youthful looking skin as it controls wrinkle and crease formation.

Use of turmeric decrease onset of dandruff .

Turmeric has no side effects. But there are some precautions you need to follow while using turmeric

1)People allergic to yellow color food or ginger should avoid turmeric

2)People with gall bladder stones, bile duct blockage should not use turmeric.

3) Pregnant Women and breast feeding women should not intake turmeric supplements as it stimulates uterus and promotes menstrual periods.

4) Those who are getting surgery should avoid the intake of turmeric 2 weeks before. As turmeric slows blood clotting

5) Very high dosage of turmeric causes stomach upsets and gastrointestinal problems

6) If you are taking medicines for blood thinning, for diabetes , blood pressure etc consult your doctor for advise on turmeric supplements
