Benefits of Negative Calorie Foods

Updated on February 18, 2013

All foods have calories.

Calories are converted into energy when we eat them. Meantime, we consume energy in digesting these foods.

Some foods have very low calorie contents that the energy we need to process them is more than the calorie they carry. Hence, negative calorie foods or the negative calorie effect of foods.

Aside from having low calorie contents, some negative calorie foods have complex nutrients that are harder to process.

Fiber, for one needs uses more energy to digest compared to some vitamins and minerals. Since fruits and vegetables contain fibers, many of them carry the negative calorie effect.

Eating fibrous foods would most likely give you negative calorie which is good for weight loss.

When you do the groceries, buy more negative calorie foods. These are the likes of:

  • Asparagus
  • Beetroots
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Spicy chili
  • Cucumber
  • All kinds of lettuce
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Mango
  • Cantaloupe
  • Apples
  • Watermelons
  • ...and so much more

Negative calorie foods are likely to be the healthy options.

Get loads of anti-oxidants in your body with these negative calorie foods.

Increase your metabolic rates and energy level with these foods.

Even if you’re not planning to lose weight, eating negative calorie foods will do that for you. All you need is to eat more of them. Buy more fruits; and eat more vegetables. What have you got to lose other than some extra pounds?

Eating negative calorie foods alone (and nothing else) is however not the secret recipe for weight loss. It's not healthy too. There should be balance in all things.

You don’t have to sacrifice the foods that you love eating to get the benefits of negative calorie foods.

You still need to get proteins and other minerals from meats, poultry and dairies. Get carbohydrates and fiber from wheat and grains.

You simply need to add more negative calorie foods in your diet.

Cook more vegetables with your pork. Eat more salads. Switch snacking brownies to munching carrots, for example. How about a juicy watermelon rather than cold ice cream bars?

Negative calorie foods are all around us. In fact, they are usually cheaper than our lower-quality food choices.

If you would try to hold back on eating pizza, donuts and burger to at least once a week, you'd be improving your health and your weight. More so, try eating more greens and colorful fruits and vegetables every day. You’ll see great wonders with your energy level and your general well-being.

I had heard that eating celery cost more calories to use up than the calories in it...thus making it a negative calorie food. I had not heard about some of these others. We should all eat more fruits and veggies. Like you said, they are certainly better for us than many of the alternatives like ice cream bars or high calorie snack foods. Voted up, useful and sharing.

Wow this looks very good list of negative calorie foods. One big surprise was Mango. We always thought that since mango is so sweet and full of sugar then it must be high calorie food. Mango season is around the corner so this year I am not going to stop myself.

Hi RS - mangoes contain sugar (and calories), much so when they're sweet. It's still good to snack on though, compared to biscuits and pastries. Enjoy the mangoes!
