1) Cushioning

A yoga mat for hot yoga has to be well cushioned and must have extra padding. Hot yoga would mean an hour of intense work out and that's why you need something that has enough padding. More padding makes it more durable and helps it last longer. If you were to just get a yoga towel or a thin mat, it would wear out after just a few sessions.

2) Durability

Most mats that you see in the market are made of PVC. If you want something that is eco friendly, then you must opt for yoga mats that are made of bamboo or even rubber. Rubber is really sturdy and goes perfectly well with Bikram yoga. The same goes for bamboo. These wear well, which makes them perfect for hot yoga. Moreover, these bamboo yoga mats are much lighter although they appear otherwise.

3) Traction

If you're practicing Bikram yoga, it goes without saying, you'll be sweating profusely- much more than ordinary yoga. With your feet becoming wet, your yoga mat becomes slippery. It would be a shame if you were to slip and fall. That is precisely why you need yoga mats that offer more traction. Such mats are usually sweat proof or sweat absorbent and have a non slippery surface. Hence, even if they become wet they never become slippery.

4) Reversibility

If you head to a yoga mat shop and ask for mats specifically meant for Bikram yoga, you will be shown a hoard of reversible mats. These are versatile and immensely useful. On one side, you'll find a sticky surface. Well not sticky per say, but sticky in the sense it provides better grip. While you're standing there doing all those balancing postures, you can rest assured knowing that you won't fall. On the other side, you have a towel like surface. In fact, it even functions like a towel in the sense that it soaks up all your perspiration. Once you begin sweating during the session, you can switch sides so that you're more comfortable.
