Beware the Blue Screen

Most of us are aware of the term 'blue screen of death'. It's that moment when your heart sinks into your stomach, and the panic rises inside as you realize all is lost. It's most certainly a horrible feeling. However, fret not, that's not what I'm talking about. What I am referring to is the blue lighting on your computer screen.
If any of you are like me, 90% of your day is staring at a computer screen of some type. I'm even guilty of playing a game on my phone to unwind before bed... which is the worst time to use your phone. Whereas light of any kind can effect how your brain creates melatonin, blue light is the biggest culprit.
I have migraines quite often and have been researching ways to ease my eye strain. I wear contacts, and at first thought it might be better to wear my glasses while using the computer. However, my glasses actually made it worse. So, I looked into screen covers that can filter out certain lights and shades. Yeah... my work computer is a 22" screen and those simple little screens cost $50+. The boss isn't going to swing for that.
I started searching around and found something called twilight for my phone. I downloaded it and tried it out for a few days. I LOVE it! The best part... it's free! There are several other apps out there will do the same thing, just do a quick search.
After having such good results with twilight, I dug a little deeper, trying to find something for my computer screen. Low and behold, f.lux. I downloaded it and adjusted the blue light and felt an immediate difference in my eye strain.
I highly recommend giving both a try if you are wanting to decrease eye strain and help ease you into sleep at night. I'm sure there are other computer apps out there, but f.lux is the only one I've tried so far.
Studies are showing that the energy saving bulbs (LED and CFL) give off more blue light than their predecessors, so that's something to watch out for too. I haven't dug too deep into that yet, but have no fear... I will.
