Updated on October 9, 2011

Chances are if you are reading this article you are thinking about or have already decided to buy a Waterpik Water Flosser. If you have done all the research and know the benefits that using a Waterpik Water Flosser can make to your dental health you might want to skip the next few paragraphs and go straight to the product reviews. If not and you still need to be convinced to buy a Waterpik Water Flosser just read on!

Why chose Waterpik?

Waterpik invented the water flosser in 1962 so they have almost half a century of experience in developing and producing oral healthcare products for our use. Describing these products as water flossers is relatively new so you might be more familiar with the term oral irrigator or dental water jet.

Waterpik is the number one brand recommended by our Dental Professionals for our use at home with nine out of ten recommending Waterpik over other brands. This is not surprising given that the company's stated mission is to be the first choice for innovative, stylish, high-value products that enhance health and wellness while supporting sustainability. The company is known for its innovation and understands the importance of focussing on and incorporating the needs of their customers into their new product designs.

Given these core values it is not really surprising that the effectiveness and safety of Waterpik Water Flossers has been evaluated in over 50 published studies carried out in more than 25 independent and university-based research centers.

Why use a Water Flosser?

Although Americans are known throughout the world for their great teeth American gum health is lagging some what behind with the American Academy of Peridontology reporting that three out of every four American adults are currently suffering from some form of gum disease.

Gum disease is health problem which needs to be taken more seriously as it not only causes bad breath and tooth loss it is also connected with other systemic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease,

The great news for our gum health is that using a water flosser can help you get the healthy gums you are striving for. Using a water flosser has been clinically proven to be twice as effective as normal string floss. It is easy and pleasant to use (on the correct setting!) and takes just one minute to floss your whole mouth removing up to 99.9% of the plague from the areas treated. Unlike string floss water flossing removes bacteria from below the gumline whilst also providing a gentle massage to your gums which stimulates and improves circulation to keep your gums healthy and strong.

If you are unlucky enough to have any bridges, crowns or implants or are fitted with a brace water flossing is so much more convenient and it is three times more effective at removing plague and debris from around braces.

A study at the University of Nebraska found that adding a water flosser to tooth brushing was up to 93% more effective at improving gum health than toothbrushing and string flossing. Whether using a manual or sonic-powered toothbrush, adding a water flosser resulted in better reductions in gum bleeding, gingivitis, and plaque, the common signs of gum disease.

My Personal Choice

My personal first choice would be the Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser, the larger reservoir, its versatility and three year warranty put it head and shoulders above the other two. If space in my bathroom was a problem I would happily chose the Waterpik Cordless Plus Water Flosser. It isn't quite in the same league as the Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser but it has almost all the same features. The Waterpik Water Flosser Cordless Rechargeable WP-360W was my least favorite and whilst I'm sure it still does a very good job it just doesn't have the features of the other two models.
