Byetta [exenatide] aids weight loss for type 2 diabetics

Byetta and Diabetes

Byetta is a fairly recent drug to be used in the control of blood sugar for diabetics.

I began using it last October along with the tablets I was taking which were; metformin; and glimipiride. It has to be taken within an hour before eating twice a day from a measured dose pen.

How is Byetta used

What Byetta is used for.

It contains a substance known as exenatide which is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is to be used along with tablets such as metformin.

The dosage.

It is either in 5 or 10 microgram doses. Each dose is pre measured and only needs the knob at the end of the needle twisting until the dosage reads in the little window, very easy to do.

How does Byetta work

How does it work.

As far as I understand it works by slowing down the passage of food through your stomach and guts. Byetta this can reduce sugar spikes and makes you feel full for a longer period and may reduce the amount of carbohydrates that are absorbed from food, thus decreasing the amount of sugars present in the blood and body tissues.

I am not medically trained or qualified to really answer this, but I can recommend it.

Weight Loss

From a personal view point.

My sugar was slowly increasing and I had reached the maximum dosage of the tablets that I was taking. For a while my doctor had toyed with the thought of putting me on insulin, but the downside to that was the fear of weight gain. I was already over weight and needed to lose some weight. I began seeing a dietician, not for the first time I might add and she decided that I was not eating enough to lose weight. My calorie intake was about 1k-1.5k per day. The recommended is 2k for an adult man. I was told that it might help me lose weight and that was of interest to me.

I had a complete change of diet, and at that time I never ate bread, mostly because I hated that doughy rubbish served up by the supermarkets, so I began making my own. I cut out meat pies [that was sad] I never ate sweets or grazed through the day other than to eat apples and other fruit. In twelve months I lost 5 stone. My doctor was obviously very pleased and suggested that I try the Byetta to help with the sugar count which was still high.

I can’t exercise much because I’m in a wheelchair so going for a walk is out of the question. I had very bad water retention problems which came to a head when I was hospitalised with cellulites, the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.

Because the pen is a fixed dose it is really easy to self administer, usually into my tummy and it does not hurt. I can’t eat a mid-day meal these days after a healthy breakfast of my own homemade bread. I just have an apple for lunch and maybe a banana with a cup of coffee. Then just before evening meal I have to jab again. Once you are in the routine it is all very simple.

By the way I am convinced that my bread helped heal the horrific condition my legs had got into. They stopped leaking within a couple of weeks and the sores slowly healed. Perhaps something in the yeast or the way artisan bread flour is milled still using stone grinders rather than huge steel rollers.

Weight Loss

Since taking the Byetta I have lost weight another 10kg or 22lbs which I am really delighted with because over just short of two years I have managed to lose 7stone and counting. So can definately help you lose weight if used with a sensible eating plan.

I had to start using insulin this last month and it has slowed my weight lose, but I am still determined to reach my target weight this year.

There can be side affects and you need to consult your GP before taking it. Although it helped me with my weight loss, you still have to try it for yourself.

Hi Tony, a great hub about the new Byetta drug and your account of coping with diabetes. This will be a great inspiration and helpful to anyone suffering from diabetes - type 2 or 1. I had an aunt who suffered from diabetes for many years and I know just how awful it can be at times. Still you've made remarkable progress and I know you'll get to your target weight! But well done so far!
