Can Sobriety Change Your Life

Updated on August 12, 2013

Sobriety Verses Being Addicted

You may ask yourself and possibly others, "can sobriety change your life?" I am here to tell you just what getting sober and living a life a sobriety did for me and my family. Every bit of what I will have to say is 100 % true.

Being clean and sober and standing up to my inner demons once and for all has change my life so much in the last 2 1/2 years I can not even believe it myself.

I was one of those alcoholics that lived in denial for many many years and no matter what anyone had to say to me regarding my drinking alcohol I just let it go in one ear and out the other. I thought to myself, "what do these people know about me and how dare they tell me how to live my own life."

Little did I know that years later I would finally see the light which would change my life for the better and will live my life in sobriety forever.

Once I got out of the denial I lived in for so long I then realize all those things that people would tell me about my drinking were totally right and I was the one that was only fooling myself and lying to others and to myself.

October 27, 2009 was the first day of my sober living and finding sobriety.

During the first three weeks or so I was a nervous wreck and wondering, "can I do this once and for all?" Can I beat my inner demons and find sobriety in my life again? I knew that negative thinking would never get me anywhere because I had experienced negativity in my life for years. I didn't believe that I could live a day without my crutch, so I used that for my excuse to continue to drink alcohol. I thought life couldn't be fun at all without having a buzz.

I knew I was doing wrong to myself and my family, but it wasn't enough to ever make me stop drinking alcohol until that lonely night in my garage when not one beer was drunk yet, and a voice came over me that gave me chills from my feet to the top of my head. It was as if I was cleansed. It was a feeling like have never experienced before. It felt like all the bad and alcohol was rinsed from my body as if I was a new person. Tears came down my face and I just listened to what God had to tell me. I never moved one inch and just listened and cried all alone with no one seeing what had happened to me.

Here 2 1/2 years later I write to help others realize that anyone can get and stay sober and that God will help you if you ask for the help to finding your sobriety as I did. I didn't ask that night, but I have asked many times for God to help me to stop drinking without any side effects happening to me. The Dt's and things I had heard from many alcoholics scared me to death and I believe because of those things I had heard made me afraid to stop drinking.

Having a Positive Attitude and believing that I could beat this addiction to alcohol gave me so much inner strength, and believing in what God had said to me, I knew than that anything is possible and that my life, starting that night, would be changed forever.

The dreams and goals I had for so many years that I could never fulfill because of my addiction to alcohol will now be able to be achieved and to be able to achieve each one being clean and sober.

DREAM AND GOAL # ONE that couldn't be fulfilled because of my addiction to alcohol.

  • I always wanted to have a home by the Sea and just live a simple life.
  • I wanted to change occupations and do something I enjoyed in my older years.
  • I wanted to travel less to my job.
  • I wanted to be debt free and have a plain simple home by the Bay and Ocean.

I have, and I am living the life that I thought would never happen. Anyone that has an addiction to alcohol can change their life if you really want a life of sobriety as i did. Having a positive attitude and believing in yourself will make your sobriety come true.

Never give up because there is life out there and a beautiful life at that if you just go after it, and have the willingness, desire and a strong determination to make it happen. You are in control of your life and can change it anytime you wish.

If you would like to read how I got started drinking alcohol, and why, then here is my Ebook called My Life Of Alcohol Addiction.

****So if you ever ask yourself, can sobriety change your life, I am here to tell you, and living proof that it certainly will 1000 fold.****

@ Andy - Thank you so much for reading and your comment. I am so happy you made it through and said goodbye to an avoidable addiction just as I did. You are so right saying "if you think you can do something and keeping that positive attitude you will achieve.

When I drank I thought I needed it to be happy and have fun just like the others I hung out with. I have to say when that voice of God came over me It changed my life forever. I wrote a hub on that lonely night in my garage and I have to say, if you believe you will indeed achieve anything in life including long term sobriety.

God Bless you my friend :)

      Yet another well written Hub

Denial is just another belief I guess, and it's only when folks are willing or able to switch their beliefs that they have any chance of changing. As Henry Ford once put it, 'If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right on both counts'.

We are what we believe we are, and to a great extent we are limited or liberated by those beliefs.

When I lived in Holland some 20 years ago now, I really wanted to stop drinking, but no matter how many times I said to myself; 'This thing has to stop', I'd follow it with the thought, 'But I'll never be able to put a plug in the jug', and I was right of course – that is until the day arrived when I said to myself; 'Oh yes I bloody well can', and guess what? I was right again ;-)

It is only by changing the way we look at things, that the things we look at change (Wayne Dyer), which is what you have conveyed pretty much in your new hub ;)
