Change Your Life and Career: Renew Your Determination Every 3 Days

Updated on August 3, 2014

Learning About Every 3 Days

I wish I could give proper credit to where I heard this, but it was either a sage or philosophy teacher that said that the average determination only lasts 3 days. So logically, we suffer a fatal setback after 3 days, decide that we've failed and then we spend the next 362 days doing exactly what we did last year.

If you can find the source, please let me know so I can update this piece.

Every Day is New Year's Day

We hear the same thing every single year, and every day approaching a new year: "It's time to make those annual determinations". And 3 days into the new year, we've already given in. But what if all it takes is a series of small steps to prevent the same failure?

Think about the big determinations for 2014. Here's my list:

1. Take concrete steps to become a millionaire and retire early.

2. To suffer what there is to suffer, and enjoy what there is to enjoy

3. To have my most successful career year

4. To be the best family member, partner, friend, etc.

5. To lose 25 pounds and then gain 10 pounds of muscle so I end up -15 pounds

AND THEN THE MOST IMPORTANT NOTE BY FAR

51. To renew my determinations every 3 days

The Recipe

Every great dish has a recipe, even if it's not necessarily something written down. You use your intuition, your learned experiences and some resemblance of logic to bake an apple pie or make a bowl of spaghetti. Goal achievement works along the same lines.

  • You absolutely must keep your goals simple. Short and to the point, and as specific as you can be.
  • Your goals have to be easily accessible. I choose to have copies on my computers, my phone, my notepad and in my bedroom.
  • You have to determine to look at your goals every single day. This is a huge one for most people because reminders keep you from failure. Example: If you want to lose weight, post pictures of what you looked like when you were overweight.
  • You need to have a punishment or negative reinforcement in place for if you miss your goals. Example: If this year isn't a career year for me then I'm in real financial trouble (failing to achieve the goal is catastrophic all on its own)
  • Celebrate weekly progress. A glass of wine, a temple massage, an extra strong cup of coffee.

The Payoff

What I wouldn't give to walk down the streets and the hallways every day as a successful person. I want to walk with my head high, my shoulders straight and broad, my chest out (with muscles) moving at a compelling pace towards my next objective.

The reason we set goals and achieve goals is to be happy. It's not just to be successful.

The reason we set personal finance goals is to be happy. It's not just to be rich.

And I would like nothing more than to be able to look in the mirror and read these comments at the end of the year and revel in the happiness we've been able to achieve.

About DealForALiving

I believe that being frugal and making smart money choices is like any other exercise. As we continue to practice good habits in saving money where possible, finding deals for what we want, and having a good time at it, then we become better at dealing for a living.

I'm committed to sharing my experiences with getting the most out of using credit cards, saving and spending tips, and I might even add a slice of perspective without trying to be a psychoanalyst like some other personal finance folks out there.

Please let me know what you think and if you'd like to hear my take on a specific topic.

Most Sincerely,
