The Ability to Choose: One of Life's Most Precious Gifts

While some environments allow more freedom than others, the truth is that every single person who ever has lived or will live on this planet is born with the amazing ability to make choices.

If you can just comprehend the idea of how precious the ability to choose is, and actually allow yourself to recognize all the freedom that you have, this can be one of the most empowering ideas that you ever come across.

Those who learn to master the skill of making choices that will yield positive results in their lives are leaps and bounds ahead of those who choose to act as victims to every difficult situation that they find themselves in.

The power to have a great day or a miserable one is completely in your hands, and this same idea can just as easily be applied to longer lengths of time.

You can choose to have an amazing day, an amazing week, an amazing year, and even an amazing lifetime. It's all up to you.

It's Time to Take Responsibility for the Way You Feel

Too many people in this world give up their freedom to choose how they feel and instead allow people and circumstances outside of themselves to determine how they are feeling.

I am amazingly blessed to have a mother who taught me that I was in control of my feelings from a very young age. If I ever told her that someone made me mad, she told me that nobody can make me mad, but I can choose to be mad.

She was right. I have complete power to choose how I'm going to feel about and react to any given situation. In a situation where many people would say that I have a right to be angry, I can choose to be forgiving or even not to care.

I can wake up every single morning deciding that I am going to look on the bright side and have a wonderful day, and then I can choose to follow through and have a wonderful day with no regrets no matter what challenges I face.

On the other hand, if I choose to complain and see the worst in every person and situation that I am surrounded by, I'm probably not going to have the best day.

It sounds amazingly simple, but it's also amazingly true. For the most part, the quality of your day is in your hands. It all depends on your own attitude. It depends on how you choose to see the people and situations around you.

Your happiness and satisfaction in life depends on you more than it depends on your family, your friends, your job, or any situation that you are currently dealing with.

Taking Choices to the Classroom

I've been in the field of education for almost a decade now, and when people realize that I chose to spend years of my life teaching junior high students, they usually tell me that I'm crazy. They tell me that they would hate to have to work with teenagers every day.

Even my students often tell me that they can't understand why I never yell or get frustrated and angry at the kids that are being ridiculously rude to me.

The truth of the matter is that I chose to go into the career path that I did. I choose every day to see the best in my students and recognize that they are in a difficult stage of life. I choose to forgive them for their lack of maturity and tact and encourage them along the way to their next stage of life. I choose to laugh at those situations that many people might find extremely frustrating.

Does this mean that I have to choose to be a doormat? No way! My students know that being disrespectful to me is totally unacceptable. I have chosen to have high standards for the behavior and language that is acceptable in my presence.

When my students choose to be disrespectful to me, an unpleasant consequence for them is definitely going to follow, but that doesn't mean that I have to get bent out of shape and let their behaviors ruin my day.

Generally I will in a very calm way remind my students that their choices have consequences and that if they want to have the freedom to hang out with their friends after school, they should make the kinds of choices that wouldn't lead them to have an after school detention.

When I choose to treat my students with fairness and respect and deal with them calmly, I am choosing to have a much better day than I would have had if I was to lower my own standards by yelling harsh words at them and belittling them for their weaknesses.

There are a lot of choices available when it comes to getting physically active. Choose something that's fun and exciting for you or try something new. You might find out that doing a 5K mud obstacle course in a crazy costume is right up your alley.

Choose to Be Physically Healthy

Most people would agree that their physical health plays a large role in their quality of life.

Luckily, we don't have to be passive bystanders in this area. We can choose to play an active role in our own physical, mental, and emotional health, and hence choose to improve the quality of our lives.

Many people don't realize how much of an effect their physical well being has on their emotional health and vice versa.

Of course we can choose to have a good attitude even when our bodies are feeling under the weather, but we all know that it's easier to choose joy when we are feeling physically healthy and strong.

We can all choose to eat foods that will strengthen our bodies and avoid eating those foods that will make our bodies weak. If you know that eating excessive amounts of sugar is bad for you, you have the power to choose not to eat as much sugar.

It is up to you to choose to give your body the nutrition that it craves and needs in order to maintain optimal health.

Not everyone is physically capable of staying active and exercising on a regular basis, but if that is something that is within your control, be grateful and empower yourself by choosing to take advantage of that opportunity.

Go for a walk, a jog, or a run. Enjoy a swim on a beautiful summer day. Don't take the amazing body that you have for granted.

You might not always feel amazing in your body, but the fact that your body even exists is miraculous, and the better you choose to treat your body, the better it will treat you.

Some people think that it is too late to choose to be healthy. Maybe they are extremely overweight and have given up hope of ever being in shape. This is going to sound pretty blunt, but it's true:

Giving up hope on losing weight is a choice that you have made, and the more empowering choice is to choose to do something about your weight if you are unsatisfied with it.

Take it from somebody who made the choice and put forth the effort to lose almost 100 pounds. It's possible, and extremely empowering to prove to yourself that you can do something that difficult.

Every day of your life will be better when you choose to be an active participant in your physical health as much as you possibly can.

Choose Positive Emotions and Improve Your Physical Health

You already read my mom's words of wisdom about how nobody can make you be angry, but you can choose to be angry.

What if applying those words of wisdom and choosing positive emotions could actually help improve your physical health?

Many people don't realize that our emotional health can play a large role in our physical health. We are all unique, so some people's bodies respond to emotional stress in different ways than others, but it's hard to deny that there is a connection between our emotions and our physical well being.

When you are feeling overly stressed, do you find yourself eating a different amount of food than you normally would? Overeating and under-eating are both symptoms of emotional distress.

Fatigue, headaches, and an abundance of digestive issues have all been connected to the way that people handle certain emotions.

In fact, there has been research done that shows that negative emotions can wreak havoc on your body over time if not kept in check. Some of my favorite books on this topic are Feelings Buried Alive Never Die and Heal Your Body.

As a certified foot zoning practitioner, I do a lot of work with emotions along with using reflexology in my practice.

I used to think it sounded a little crazy myself that someone's emotions could be causing serious physical ailments in their bodies, but the longer that I've done this type of work, the more of a believer I am that we can experience physical healing when we are willing to choose positive emotions over negative ones.

Choosing to heal our emotions can really play a huge role in healing our bodies and improving our overall quality of life.

How Can You Choose to Be More Positive? What About Anxiety and Depression?

I've made some pretty bold statements about choosing to control our emotions, and I want to be sensitive to the fact that there are people who suffer from mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

I personally have struggled with anxiety at times in my life and have close relationships with some people who suffer from depression.

I completely understand that these are difficult issues, and I am strongly in support of getting whatever medication or professional counseling that might be necessary to help combat these overwhelming ailments.

That being said, I think it's also important to acknowledge that regardless of what trials we face in our lives (even these difficult emotional disorders), we can make choices that will make the situation better.

The following are a list of simple activities you can choose to participate in that will aid in improving your mood:

  • Keep a gratitude journal- It sounds simple and too good to be true, but writing down all the good things you have in life can be a very powerful tool to improve your mood. Focusing on the things that you are grateful for will help to ease your worries and give you an opportunity to let the light in when you are going through a dark time of life.
  • Stay physically active-I already talked about this above, but physical activity is an extremely effective way of improving emotional health. When you are physically active your brain releases chemicals that help to improve your mood. You might even consider finding an exercise buddy. This will give you support in your commitment to exercise as well as some extra support emotionally.
  • Live in the now-Most of our anxiety comes from worrying about the future, and most depression comes from dwelling on the sorrows of our past. Focusing on living in the now will help you to cherish the moment that you are in rather than allowing the past and the future to get in the way of your enjoyment of life. This doesn't mean that we can't have plans and dreams for the future, but it does mean that we can focus on what is in our control now as we work towards those goals. Learning to do this has really helped me to lessen the anxiety that I experience in my life.
  • EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Tapping-If you've never heard of this, it's definitely worth looking into. It utilizes the idea of acupressure (like acupuncture only without the scary needles) and modern psychology. You put these two amazing tools together and you can experience some unbelievable shifts from a negative emotional state to a more positive one. I've used EFT tapping to overcome some horrible anxieties. I was in a car accident a few years ago that left me with a lot of trauma and anxiety. I was struggling just to drive without crying. I literally felt like I was going to die every time I got in a car. After an hour and a half session tapping with a life coach, I felt like a huge burden had been lifted. I left her house ready to jump in my car and drive across the country. If you want to learn how to do EFT tapping, this video is great.

Choose to Achieve Your Dreams

If you want to really start feeling excited about life, choose to do something that you are passionate about.

Too many people choose to just let life happen to them rather than making their lives what they want them to be.

If you aren't going after your dreams, you are choosing to live a life that is probably fairly mundane and boring. If you don't have any dreams to go after, you probably feel like your life is stagnant and lacking direction.

Spend some time with yourself to figure out what you really care about. Figure out what you really want to do with your life, and then do it.

Don't fall victim to those who will tell you you're not good enough. Especially, don't be that person who is always beating yourself up and telling yourself that you can't do the things you are passionate about.

Again, some people might think I'm crazy when I say this, but I'm a pretty strong believer that your passions and dreams should be some of the main missions of your life.

If you are going to do a job, you should give it all you have, so why not pick a job that you can feel excited about doing every day?

If you don't feel that way about your job now, come up with a plan to make your life something you can really get excited about. It might mean a job change, or it might mean saving enough money that you have the time and funds to do the things that you really want to do.

Whatever it means for you, it's time to move forward and make your dreams realities. Live a life without regrets.

Choose to be courageous! Choose to take a stand against the critics and achieve your dreams!

You will find that your quality of life each day, week, and year increases until you are living the life that you have always dreamed of.

In reality, the amazing life that you have been waiting for is actually out there waiting for you, but you have to choose it. You have to take action. You can have that life or let it pass you by. It's completely up to you. It's your choice.
