Clean Earth Running: Gear

Updated on May 1, 2007

"Our definition of quality includes a mandate for building products and working with processes that cause the least harm to the environment. We evaluate raw materials, invest in innovative technologies, rigorously police our waste and use a portion of our sales to support groups working to make a real difference. We acknowledge that the wild world we love best is disappearing. That is why those of us who work here share a strong commitment to protecting undomesticated lands and waters. We believe in using business to inspire solutions to the environmental crisis." - Patagonia

I have been searching for environmental safe running gear, and although I found several companies claiming to do everything from make organic clothing to donate part of their profit to help the environment, I found one that tops them all! PATAGONIA!

This fabulous company not only sells environmentally safe organic clothing, but is on a serious campaign to help keep our earth green. Here is there website so you can check them out: www.patagonia.com But allow me to tell you a little more about what I have found.

Their clothing

Patagonia creates clothing that is environmentally safe, meaning the process of making the clothing does not adversely effect our environment. The clothing is also organic, meaning the clothing is made form organically grow cotton (and other materials), and will not adversely effect your health.

Their clothing line also uses recycled polyester to create warm and comfortable base layers, and also give a discount to you if you give them your old polyester clothing to be recycled.

Their Campaign

Each year Patagonia selects a different campaign, finding a different area of the environment to help. This year their campaign is "Oceans as Wilderness" This campaign is devoted to the oceans. The goal is to help us all see what is under the waters of the earth. "How the vast schools of tuna are like those herds of buffalo. How bottom trawling is like clear-cutting an entire forest to get at a single tree." Patagonia plans to spend the next year with marine scientists and writers, surfers and fishermen, to help teach the public just how close the connection is between the vitality of human life and the marine environment, so that we can all become better stewards of the ocean in our daily lives.

To support their education cause they are selling "Oceans as Wilderness" t-shirts. Proceeds from the sale of the t-shirt will go to Oceana, a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world's oceans.

Getting You Involved

Patagonia works to not only get you in environmentally safe and organic running gear, but they work to get you involved. The website and information packages list ways of getting involved- everything from keeping the earth green by not littering while running to writing to your congress men to encourage our government to help keep our earth safe!
