Coccyx Pain Resources...

Coccyx pain, referred to in medical terms as coccydynia, is a condition in which pain is experienced in the coccyx. The coccyx or the tailbone area is found at the end of the vertebral column, it is usually made up of four bones lying below the sacrum.

Coccyx pain may occur to both children and adults. It is also diagnosed in both males and females, but the condition is more common in women because their coccyx is, by nature, more protruding or exposed than that of men.

In most cases, the origin of coccyx pain is unknown or unidentified. But whatever the cause, pain in the tailbone can be so severe it can prevent you from doing even the most common tasks.

The agony may last for as short as a few days or as long as a few weeks, months and even years. But those suffering from this condition need not helplessly bear the pain as there are many ways to deal with tailbone pain.

  • Medications
Probably the very first thing that comes to people’s mind whenever they feel something hurt is to take a pain reliever. A lot medicine can now be conveniently availed of over-the-counter to help relieve the discomfort of coccyx pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are usually taken for mild to moderate pain.

An Ibuprofen like Advil is one such drug and it can relieve the inflammation and decrease prostaglandin synthesis thereby allowing one to bear the painful sensation brought about by tailbone pain. Analgesics may also be taken as its sedative effects can also help alleviate the discomfort.
  • Hot and Cold Treatment
Both heat and ice are beneficial for coccyx pain sufferers. Problems in the coccyx usually involve swelling and inflammation. Applying an ice or cold pack to your tailbone area will produce vasoconstriction. This will slow down circulation thus, reducing the soreness and pain. For some, five to ten minutes of cold application is sufficient to significantly scale down the pain. For those who experience pain in their tailbone but with no bruising or swelling, hot packs or baths may offer relief.
  • Coccyx Cushion
There are different kinds of coccyx cushions being sold out there in the market. Two of the most common kinds are the doughnut and the wedge. These are available in surgical supply stores or at drug stores. The coccyx cushions provide comfort and support to the patient especially while on a sitting position.

It is uniquely designed with a hole at the center corresponding to the area where the coccyx comes into contact while in a sitting position thus eliminating direct pressure on the tailbone area. Regular use of the said cushion will aide in decreasing the pain and soreness. This will eventually lead to full recuperation from the coccyx pain.

Those mentioned above are only simple ways to relieve a painful coccyx. While they are generally effective and often sufficient in dealing with mild cases of coccyx pain, it is always best to consult a physician to get a better assessment of the problem.

Moreover, this will ensure that no other underlying conditions are present that may require a more aggressive approach to the treatment of coccyx pain.
