Say what? Shoot it up where?

Coffee! We love coffee! Well, most of us do. We drink coffee a lot and others take it in a somewhat unusual fashion!

Coffee taken in moderation could be quite beneficial to our health. It is a great source of anti-oxidants. Some studies have shown that it lowers the risk of some serious diseases like Diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer and dementia. It can also help fight depression. It is a great stimulant and it helps boosts our metabolic system. Accordingly, a single cup of coffee contains: Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid), Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium and Niacin.

So, how do you take your coffee?

I like it black (no sugar) and I like to sip it not to shoot it into my bottom opening! Yes, some people do it the other way and this is called coffee enema.

Fascinating indeed!

What is coffee enema?

First, let’s define the words. Coffee- well, we all know what coffee is. Enema- is the procedure of inserting liquids into the colon through the rectum via anus. The procedure is usually carried out for medical purposes and as part of the alternative health therapies.

So, coffee enema is a procedure of introducing coffee into the anus to cleanse the rectum and large intestines.

Many holistic physicians recommends coffee enema for internal cleansing purposes, particularly in the liver detoxification. They say it can help relieve constipation, insomnia, etc. And, accordingly it also helps in the weight loss process and even as part of cancer healing regime.

But, what is the science behind coffee enema?

The concept of rectal cleansing is ancient. However, the idea of coffee enema was only conceived in 1917 with a notion to mechanically cleanse the colon. According to the German Scientists who conducted a study and investigation of caffeine’s effect on the bile duct and small intestines, coffee had a positive effect on the intestinal tract and coffee enema had positive effects on people with Tuberculosis and later on even to those with cancer.

According to his studies, during the enema, caffeine travelled through the smooth muscle of the small intestine and into the liver, cleared the gastro-intestinal tract and removed more toxins and bile than a normal enema. He said, “coffee enemas are not given for the function of the intestines but for the stimulation of the liver.” The results, the individual is more relaxed and in a better state of mind, revitalized and refreshed. Complications? Well, some say it’s highly unusual.

Claimed benefits of coffee enema:

  1. Detox and purify the colon and the liver
  2. Help eliminate parasites
  3. Help reduce many types of pain, i.e. muscle pain, arthritis, etc
  4. Help with depression and general nervous tension
  5. Improve mental clarity
  6. Increase energy level
  7. Improves digestion
  8. Improve weight loss

The major benefit of the coffee enema is to enhance the elimination of toxins through the liver.

In contrast, some medical experts who investigated the procedures not only stated that it’s impractical; it is as well very harmful. And, while alternative medical practitioners believed that it is effective, there is no scientific evidence to back it up. As well, it may have been said that adverse effects are unusual, however, coffee enema have definitely some serious side effects.

Preparing Coffee Enema-

See video below for ingredients and procedure:

Dangers and side effects:

  1. Infections
  2. Electrolyte imbalance
  3. Polymicrobial enteric septicemia
  4. Salmonella
  5. Brain abscess
  6. Internal burning or rectal perforation, hematochezia, tenesmus, and spastic anal pain
  7. Mal-absorption of fat, fat soluble vitamins and calcium
  8. Death

Like coffee taken orally, coffee enema can be stimulating and addictive. Combined with fasting, coffee enema can increase the risk of its adverse effect.

Dr. Oz explains the adverse effects of coffee enema-

In one of the segments of Dr. OZ on TV, he explained that while the coffee might clean out your bowel tube, not all of the coffee is discharged in the process. Some of it is absorbed into the blood stream in a very unique and unhealthy way, which can have a very strong negative effect on the body like dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Therefore, it is not recommended and should be reconsidered as an alternative treatment for various diseases.

3 BIG reasons why coffee enema is not recommended:

1. Contrary to some belief and for the most obvious reason, coffee enema is not natural and not a healthier choice. The rectum is a tube designed to flush out rubbish from your body and not to fill in.

2. Coffee enema will flush out bad bacteria along with the good bacteria, which will make your body rather susceptible to illness because your defense mechanism is now weak since you have flushed out the good bacteria of your body that are built in to fight diseases.

3. Coffee enema, can be addictive and if not administered properly may damage the linings of your rectum or intestinal wall and in some serious situations, may cause death.

Be honest, have you tried coffee enema?

My views:

Personally, I’m quite skeptic about it. Why do I have to make it complicated for my coffee when it can already boost my metabolism or give me the nutrients my body need simply by sipping a cup directly through my mouth and let it go down the natural way as it is supposed to do. Now, it may not have the same effect like if I shoot it up into my rectal zone directly, which is by the way, originally designed for things to come out, but at least, it’s comfortable enough. Besides, I like the smell of my black coffee going down my mouth and not coming out from the bottom hole. I firmly believed that beverages should only go in one way and exit accordingly.

And although, coffee enema may sound like a crazy idea, others found it really beneficial. Some people who have tried the procedure professed on the effectiveness and positive results of doing it. However, I cannot for the lack of “gut” imagine myself going through the hassle of inserting any foreign object into my anus (ouch!) unless it is a case of emergency. Heaven forbid and if there’s not a choice really, I hope it is completely cool down from the coffee pot and that the tube is thoroughly sanitized and well lubricated! :)

However, for the purpose of simply cleansing my internal system, I'm pretty sure there are other methods that could work and in a much simpler way without the mess and discomfort as one would feel with coffee enema. I will personally and certainly opt for that.

Such a wonderful article . . . the perfect mix of information and humor! I was actually surprised at the severity of some possible side effects. Not that I was considering a coffee enema but now I'll be much more careful about leaving my mug on my chair!! = )

I've watched Coffee Enema addiction briefly on My Stranged Addictions TV Series and thought it was yuck and disgusting seeing those tubes with black coffee shoved up the anus (no offense). Thanks for this hub it explains in detail the pros and cons of it. We have problems when we do things against what is naturally meant to be.

I've just read your hub while zipping my coffee. Ha Ha. A few years back I was diagnosed with an irritable bowl syndrome and they wanted to do a Colonoscopy on me, but I was advised to go the natural route. After a few tests by a Naturopath he suggested that I should stimulate my liver because he suspected that I had liver, kidney and gall bladder stones. I went to a professional colonic irrigation nurse and for a year I was under her care. I did have a Coffee Enema amongst many other enema treatments. I lost kidney, gallbladder and liver stones during that year and today I feel 100% better. I would NEVER do it myself. Thanks for your interesting hub. Voted up

Very interesting hub but I prefer to drink my coffee! I have never heard of coffee enema but there are many ideas of the need to ”clean” the rectal zone so I am not surprised someone have tried with coffee too. But it sounds like a bad idea, coffee is simply too delicious:) Thanks for sharing!

I knew a woman who had cancer. She went through the Gerson Therapy which involved regular coffee enema. It isn't known whether she would have gotten worse anyway, or if she got worse because of the therapy. But when she came back to the Philippines she had deteriorated a lot and eventually, went back home to God. She continued the coffee enema even at home. I don't think I would want any kind of treatment. The most I'd want if I have cancer is weed, but it's not legal in the Philippines.
