Constipation: Causes of Constipation: How to Relieve Constipation Naturally?

Updated on May 1, 2016

I was recently diagnosed with a chronic Constipation condition due to long term use of one of my medications for pulmonary hypertension. I was regular, had no problem but after the physical exam when my doctor told me I was shocked. I took the x-ray and it was clear. I do not want to go in to more details however decided to find out the cause, treatment and diet for constipation which is affecting the health of millions of people including me.

According to the Doctor: If the bowel moves once or twice daily and stool is hard and difficult to pass then you are constipated no matter how regular you are.

How it builds up: If the bowel movement time is increased the stool becomes hardened and difficult to pass due to dehydration. The body gradually reabsorbs the fluid content in the feces and along with it many soluble toxins. The small hardened feces are very difficult for the normal intestine to deal with effectively. So, with the lack of bulk added by fiber in your diet, the intestine is just like a tube of toothpaste that is almost empty. Think about the moment when we have hard time to taking out that last bit of toothpaste, is exactly the same problem our intestine has. The contractions are more forceful but less effective and in result create small out pockets or diverticuli in the intestinal walls. Both diverticulitis and constipation is a change in the normal bacterial activity inside intestine. As a result bile acids normally found in the feces and excreted are altered by prolong exposure to these abnormal bacteria and become carcinogenic. This stage is called loaded bowel syndrome, where nearly the entire transverse and descending colon are filled with hard feces.

Most people habitually use laxatives to regulate bowel movement when constipation is a chronic problem. In many cases this causes a strong intestinal action due to the irritant qualities of the laxative. Unfortunately after effect is that the bowel reacts to this unusual stimulation by becoming less active just after its use. The result is that in 2-3 days when no further bowel movement occurred then we tend to use a second dose of laxative and on and on for years to come. Fiber deficiency and constipation are associated with diverticulitis, appendicitis and colon cancer.

Symptoms of Constipation:

Infrequent or difficult bowel movements, Headache, coated tongue, tiredness, bad breath, mental depression and mental dullness, lack of energy and difficulty in thinking.

Fig, Rasin and Prune tea is good for constipation.
Fig, Rasin and Prune tea is good for constipation.

Primary Cause of Constipation:

If you have constipation more than 6 months and have no underlying medical conditions then you have a primary constipation. There are 7 primary causes of constipation as below:

1 .Diet: Fiber deficiency, refined foods, excess meat, raw vegetable deficiency, excess milk, fried foods, coffee, tea, alcohol, acid formic foods, over eating, deficiency of bitter foods.

2.Inactivity: Lack of exercise, too much sitting, bedridden.

3.Long term laxative use.

4.Liver dysfunction, gall bladder disease, fried foods.

5.Stress: over work and anxiety.

6.Spinal: Lesions, poor mechanics, prolapsed colon.

7. Avoiding call of nature.

Secondary cause of Constipation

Food allergy, pregnancy, B12, anemia, dehydration or not drinking enough 8 glass of water every day.

Excessive use of laxative that contain mineral oil not only cause the bowel to become over stimulated and weekend but also rob the body of fat soluble vitamins causing more severe constipation.

The hypercalcemia, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease. muscular and myotonic dystrophy may lead to constipation.

The medications like opioids (pain killers,) (diuretics, antidepressants, antihistamines, antispasmodics, anticonvulsants, and aluminum antacids have side effect that can cause constipation.

Treatment of Constipation:

First we need to know the cause of constipation. Is the cause of constipation, fiber deficiency or Habitual?

If it`s long standing habitual constipation then three day fruit Juice fasting or 3 days apple mono diet are very effective. Eat 4-5 meals of raw apples with apple juice in between your meals. And the last day take 2 tablespoon of raw unrefined olive oil.

During the diet you should also take 25 drops of Cascara Sagrada tincture diluted in water four times daily. The right dose of it acts as a tonic and not laxative and helps strengthen bowel actions. Continue this for 2-3 weeks then reduced to 3 times for another two weeks. If the bowel movements are now regular the dose is reduced to twice daily for two weeks and then stop entirely.

A physician of Berlin, whose life work was the performing of autopsies, stated that 60 per cent of all the corpses contained in the alimentary canal various foreign mater--worms and putrefied feces--and in nearly all cases the walls of the intestines and colon were lined with a crust of hardened feces, making it evident that these organs had degenerated to a state of utter inefficiency. Progressive American physicians are rapidly awakening to the fact that retained fecal matter is one of the chief causes of disease. Autopsies are constantly revealing indescribable filthy astounding conditions. One physician publishes the following:

"I have found a prototype of the cause of all diseases of the human body, the foundation of premature old age and death. Surprising as it may seem, out of two hundred and eighty-four cases of autopsy held, but twenty-eight colons were found to be free from hardened feces and in a normal and healthy state. The others, as described above, were to a more or less extent incrusted with hardened, rotten, rejected food material. Many were distended to twice their natural size throughout their whole length with a small hole through the center and almost universally these last cases mentioned had regular bowel evacuations daily. Some of them contained large worms from four to six inches in length.

This is a very well writ Hub on a major health issue from which a large section of the populace suffer and it is ever increasing, because of the lifestyle factors adding to it. One of the most important things to keep in mind is also good habit- to keep a couple of fixed times, in morning and evening, to attend to your body needs and encourage bowel movements, regularly. Personally I think consumption of water too affects this condition; I have noted a regular and paced intake of water helps. Your suggestions of the fig, raisin and prune tea is just wonderful. I have never heard of this and sounds tasty too. Voted up- useful and interesting.

My daughter suffers from this problem and I gave her dates vinegar which she drink (1 tablespoon mix with a glass of water) 1st thing in the morning an last thing at night. It helps. If there's no dates vinegar, I think you can also use apple cider vinegar.

I've found using ghee in my diet as a substitute for all oils and fats, except for flax seed oil dressing, is really helping to keep me regular and repair my intestines.

Great hub and good info. Thanks.
