Crohn's Disease And You

Updated on April 8, 2012

Crohn's Disease

Many people end up having The disease Crohn's. In my article I wanted to explain exactly what the disease is and the effects of the disease.

Crohn's disease is a disease that causes the wall of the intestines either large or small to become inflamed which can cause redness, swelling and can be sore. The disease is also a form of inflammatory bowel disease. Symptoms of this include diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, weight loss and joint pain.

There is no known cause of Ulcerative colitis and crohn's disease. This disease happens and is seen in families. Your immune system can overreact to normal bacteria that is present in the intestines and it will cause inflammation. Bacteria's as well as viruses may also cause the disease.

The treatment to stop inflammation that doctors normally recommend are medications, medication doesn't cure Crohn's disease or Ulcerative Colitis. It only prevent flare-ups and keeps you in remission. Your doctor will want to see you about every 6 months if your condition is stable or more frequently if you have flare-ups. If medication doesn't help then surgery may be recommended. The surgery may include colostomy or an Ileostomy. Some new technology is also available such as Balloon dilation might be done if you want to put off a more complicated surgery for a while or if you have had surgery before and the doctor wants to save as much of the intestines as possible.

Thanks for sharing! I met an interesting pair of girls in one of my first college courses and they both suffered from this disease, so it's nice to learn a bit more about it.
