Cure Athlete's Foot Without Medications

My mother required foot surgery in 2012. While correcting those problems, Dr. Darcy Foral noticed the severe athlete's foot condition on mom's feet.

She told us about a cure another physician had shared with her. She said this treatment had no side effects, nearly 100% cure ratio, and had a much lower recurrence rate than any other treatment she knew. The treatment is very simple, inexpensive, and uses a common household item.

So how did it work?

The truth was, we only used it for about four months, and it completely cured the athlete's foot condition.

We saw dramatic improvement in fungus infected nails, with several of them growing out (took several months) looking normal again!

There has also been no recurrence of the condition since we stopped doing the soaks.

So What Is This Treatment?

The treatment is very simple, and these are the exact instructions we were given.

Soak your feet for 20 minutes a day in a mix of half white vinegar and half water. Do this every day for nine months.

Yes, white vinegar. You probably have some sitting in a cabinet somewhere right now. It's commonly used in cooking and sometimes used in cleaning.

You should be able to get a large jug of white vinegar for under $5.00 at most grocery stores. If you're going to do this treatment, you might want to see if getting a case of it would be less expensive.

It's most economical to find a tub that is the right size for your feet, and use only enough of the solution to just cover your feet and toes.

Questions You Might Have

1. Will it sting?

This concentration level is quite low - most store vinegar is about 5% acetic acid, which makes a 2-1/2% solution at the recommended concentration. There is no reason to make the solution any stronger than that.

Athlete's foot can present with painful cracked skin and open sore areas. If this has happened to you, do a test dip in the solution to see how your feet tolerate it. At this concentration, it shouldn't feel like anything but water.

If your skin is so damaged that soaking in the solution does bother you, soak your feet nightly in plain water until the cracking is under control and the raw areas are healed. Then start doing the vinegar soak.

2. How does this work?

Athlete's foot is caused by fungi. Fungi are an interesting life form, because they can grow a large mycelia bed underneath the area where they live.

This mycelia bed is what makes athlete's foot so hard to overcome. If you only treat the surface, the fungus continues to grow (in the form of mycelia) in optimal conditions below the surface, and the condition recurs in a short time.

Compounding the problem, the fungi that cause athlete's foot love the warm moist environment of your shoes. It provides the perfect growth medium for both the fungus and it's mycelium.

The vinegar soak causes that warm moist environment to become slightly acidic - and to remain that way even when you put your shoes back on. This acidity disrupts the growth of the mycelia and prevents the fungi from reproducing.

3. Why nine months? That's a long time.

Nine months sounds like a long time, but there's a simple reason why that is recommended. It takes about nine months for your toenails to completely grow out.

By continuing the treatment for the full nine months, you will see the best benefits, particularly for your toenails. If you have experienced thickened nails, nails that grow in a strange pattern, cracking or splitting toenails, or if your nails have "stuff" under them, then you should continue the treatment for the full nine months.

4. Are there really no side effects?

The only side effect noticed during the entire treatment was that our feet smelled faintly of vinegar all the time.

That was a small price to pay for the benefits.

Real Life Results

So, the recommendation sounded good, but we live real lives, and they get busy sometimes. This is what we actually managed to do, and the results we saw.

What We Did:

We managed 20 minute soaks at least 5 days a week, and most weeks 6 days. We almost never managed all 7 days of the week.

We continued the soaks for about 5 months.

We allowed our feet to air dry for about 10 minutes, then put on clean socks.

Results We Saw:

1. No more sticky feet, toe jam, flakes, goo, or any other weird stuff on our feet. Just nice, pink, normal looking skin!

2. The fungus on our nails started to die. It could be easily removed with nail clippers or a file. (This applies to the really thick nails.) Sometimes a layer of nail would simply peel off.

3. Thinner nails with cracking or splitting issues started smoothing out and stopped hurting. We also stopped having as many problems with ingrown nails. Several nails returned to a completely normal state.

4. At the time I wrote this (1/7/14) it has been several months since we stopped soaking our feet. The worst nails are still improving - probably would have gone much faster if we had done the full nine months. Neither of us have any other symptoms of athlete's foot on our skin.

Starting Conditions:

Both of us had symptoms of athlete's foot on the skin of our feet evidenced by stickiness and toe goo. We also both had severe issues with toenails ranging from splitting to very thick nails with strange growth patterns. My toenails caused me a lot of pain.

We had both tried numerous treatments including other soaks, miconazole, clotrimazole, several other types of creams, and terbinafine prescriptions. Even the terbinafine didn't help much, and the other treatments were largely ineffective.

Simple Easy Cure


  • Use a solution made of equal parts white vinegar and water.


  • Soak feet for 20 minutes a day.


  • Continue doing the above for nine months.

What Are You Waiting For?

You certainly don't need to be an athlete to suffer from athlete's foot. Once exposed, the condition can thrive in the environment inside shoes. The more warm and moist your shoes keep your feet, the more the condition will flourish.

Since most folks can't run around barefoot all the time, this can make the condition difficult to cure.

This easy cure simply changes the environment inside your shoes slightly. It's not enough to bother your feet, but it's definitely enough to bother the fungi that cause athlete's foot.

Vinegar is inexpensive and has no side effects. The treatment was recommended by doctors who specialize in foot care. You know it worked for at least two people. And if you suffer from athlete's foot, it might work for you too!
