What is Dandruff?
I think almost all will be knowing what it is. It is a fungal disease that affects scalps. It comes as white dust in your hair along with irritation depending on how much your skin is affected. It is commonly seen in people aged between 16 to 45.
Why Dandruff is coming?
It is usually caused by fungus (names are too complex.). Usually these fungus is present in the scalp of all people. But sometimes they will grow rapidly and will form white dust in hair which we call as dandruff.
Dandruff is of two types. Greasy dandruff and Dry dandruff. Greasy dandruff comes i people who have oily skin. This is because oil secreting glands in the skin produces large quantity of oil which favours growth of some of dandruff causing fungus. Dry dandruff is caused by the over use of Shampoo and soap. It comes as a result of skin becoming more dry than usual.
Similarly there are many other conditions that cause growth of dandruff like diabetics, alcoholism. lack of vitamins like B complex, Riboflavin etc, after effects of some medicine etc. Even AIDS can become a cause of dandruff. It is proved that dandruff causing bacteria grows very fast in AIDS patients.
Symptoms and aftereffects of Dandruff
The main symptom of dandruff is the presence of white dust like particles in hair. It comes along with irritation in scalp. Persistent irritation will lead to infection in the scalp. As the dandruff increases more, it will affect other regions in the body like face, back, chest etc.
Dandruff affects eyelids also. It is called as Blepharitis. It is not that common, it will cause your eye lids to become swollen and slightly infected.
How to control Dandruff?
Using coconut oil which is slightly warm, in the scalp will help you to decrease dandruff. Shampoos containing ketoconazole are effective against dandruff. You can such shampoos 2 or 3 times in every week. But once the dandruff problem has come down, you have to reduce the usage frequency, as these are high dose shampoos. If the problem has come down, reduce the frequency to once in a week. Else it will lead to hair loss.
If the dandruff has grown beyond limits and is causing infection, you can use medicines like Selenium sulphide, ketoconazole itself, antibiotic ointments etc.
