Iodine Deficiency Tied to Breast Cancer, Weight Gain and More!
Stop the Salt and Possibly Increase Your Cancer Risk
Doctors everywhere advise their patients to limit their intake of salt, blaming the condiment on everything from high blood pressure to cancer. And we all agree that anything in excess is detrimental to our health.
Our diets are already low in iodine (found in salt), which may cause health issues. So if we limit our salt intake, how do we get the iodine we need?
Why We Need Iodine?
Iodine is important for proper thyroid function; while Iodine deficiency has been linked to fatigue, weight gain, and breast cancer.
Most people think that they get their daily allotment of iodine from the “iodized salt” they use, but studies prove that salt loses its iodine within a few weeks after opening. Processed foods also do not contain the iodine we need.
How Much Iodine Do We Need?
The RDA for iodine is 150 mcg per day, however, if you’re an athlete or vegetarian, for example, you need more.
Ask Your Doctor
While it’s not easy to determine iodine levels, the symptoms of low iodine may mirror those of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels). These include: fatigue, insomnia, cold hands and feet, hair loss, and difficulty in staying focused.
NOTE: If you have any of these symptoms, they may be indicative of low thyroid hormone levels and low iodine levels.
Solution: Eat Foods Rich in Iodine
To get the necessary iodine into your diet, eat more of these foods: cod, haddock, eggs, cheddar cheese, cheesecake, sea salt, and iodized salt, seaweed salad and kelp.
