Dental Care: Brushing Up on the Basics
Remember that one time when most people would look ahead to losing their teeth as they got older? Well, this is no longer the case. If equipped with even just the basic knowledge of dental care, anyone should be able to prevent tooth decay and keep his teeth for the rest of his life.
Taking care of your pearly whites is crucial if you plan on keeping them healthy. While there’s plenty of ways go about it, there are two basic things that, when done on a regular basis, might just bring in the best results.
Brushing & Flossing
Ranking among the most important dental care practices is the daily brushing and flossing of the teeth. Though dentists usually recommend that one brushes his teeth twice a day and flosses at least once a day, doing both more frequently wouldn’t hurt. Why do it, though? Simple. The more you practice it, the more you prevent bad breath, tooth decay, and cavities. You also prevent getting periodontal disease, which often leads to damaging gum tissues and the bones that support the teeth. And if the big picture still isn’t clear: you’re basically saving the amount of money you would’ve spent on fillings and other expensive procedures. Who wouldn’t want that, right?
Seeing a Dentist
We all have been told to go see our dentist on a regular basis without really getting clear on the definition of “regular.” It probably varies, but the most recommended period is every six months. Why? Because it allows dentists to check for any problems right upfront and keep them from getting worse. Between a cavity that’s been growing for just a couple of months and another, for years, it’s the former that’s unquestionably a whole lot easier to fix. What’s more, frequent meet-ups with your dentist will not only mean getting your teeth cleaned but also getting fluoride treatments you wouldn’t be able to pull off all by yourself. A single dental exam will help detect poor hygiene and nutrition, as well as more serious oral problems like improper jaw alignment.
What about the kids?
Oftentimes, people are unsure when it comes to getting their children to see a dentist. Some just assume that it’s at a much later age than it actually is. Thing is, a child’s doctor can tell the likelihood of dental problems as early as six months. If big risks start showing up, they often suggest that you immediately take your child to a dentist. If not, it is commonly advised that your little bundle of joy have his first trip to a dental clinic at about one year of age.
Apart from brushing and flossing and regularly seeing your dentist, there really isn’t a lot that you have to do to maintain good oral health. Just make sure that you have the right toothpaste, you’re not brushing your teeth too hard, and you’re making enough time to hit the clinic. Do all these basic steps, and you will spare yourself the trouble, expenses, and discomfort of tooth decay.
