Importance of Brushing Teeth Regularly

Updated on October 10, 2012

Brushing teeth twice a day is a very important practice to keep away dental problems. It not only keeps the teeth clean but may also ward off heart disease and cardio vascular ailments. Studies have shown that people who brush their teeth twice daily have 70% lower chances developing cardio vascular disease. Here are some dental care tips for healthy teeth.

How to Brush Teeth Properly

Regular brushing not only cleans the teeth but also removes the dental plaque and tartar from the teeth. It only takes two minutes to brush teeth properly. Gums and tongue also have to be cleaned thoroughly. Soft toothbrushes are the best, as they would not damage the gums. It is better to use small tooth brushes are as they reach all parts of the teeth. It is extremely important to replace the tooth brush at least once in three months as the bristles are prone to collect germs and promote infection. The mouth has to be rinsed thoroughly after cleaning. It is better to use a mouthwash. Mouthwashes contain whitening agents and fluoride. The toothbrush has to be cleaned thoroughly after each brushing by holding it under running water and rubbing the bristles with fingers. Using the right toothbrush is an important part of dental care. It is essential to brush teeth properly for good dental care.

Electric Toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes are battery powered and combine an oscillatory motion with a circular motion to clean the teeth. They have removable brushes. They generally have a two minute timer and a pressure control sensor. The sensor warns when the brushing is too hard. Some of them have a long battery life and can be recharged once a fortnight. They have excellent cleaning ability, easy to use and are highly recommended. They are very good aids for proper dental care. Electric toothbrushes are likely to make your visits to the dentist less frequent.

Flossing is a good way of removing the dental plaque that forms on the teeth. Floss removes the food particles and germs that accumulate between the teeth. At times the plaque is not visible unless it is stained. Regular flossing is one of the important dental care tips for healthy teeth.

Choosing Toothpaste

Proper dental care involves choosing the right tooth paste. Tooth paste has to remove the tarter that accumulates on the teeth and below the gum line. Tarter is the main cause of gum disease. A variety of gels and pastes are available in the market. Gels are more abrasive on the teeth as they contain silica. Both gels and pastes clean quite well. Most commonly used toothpastes contain baking soda. Certain toothpastes have the ability to contain bad breath.

It is important to teach children the habit of cleaning teeth regularly. Proper dental care also involves in teaching them the right technique to do so. It is essential to give them proper dental care tips for healthy teeth at a very early age
