Depression affects anyone; without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, or color. Sometimes, its effects are so subtle that you will not even notice that you are already afflicted with it. Depression is a very serious condition, however, experts believe that it is curable. One of the most effective way to treat this condition is to identify the early signs and symptoms that affect adults and teenagers.

Men with Depression Symptoms

Men and women are both susceptible to depression, however, fewer men have been diagnosed with mental illness. One reason researchers find out is that men are hesitant to accept their illness. Recognizing early symptoms of depression in men is difficult because they tend to hide their inner struggles and aches. Below is a quick guide of the common symptoms present in men who suffer depression.

Men may have:

  • decreased or lost interest to sexual activities;
  • increased irritability and temper because they keep their feelings to themselves;
  • constant complaints of being tired, feelings of being bored;
  • disturbed sleep and sleep patterns; and,
  • intensified physical pains, such as back, chest and muscular pains.

Women are vulnerable to depression, but can cope with it easily. They need all the support they can get from their loved ones.

Women with Depression Symptoms

According to the National Mental Health Information Center in the US, in every four women, one of them is certainly affected with depression. Recognizing early signs of the illness is critical for early management and recovery.

Noticeable signs:

  • negative thoughts and feelings, such as hopelessness, sadness, or hollowness;
  • irritable and have deep suicidal thoughts;
  • lost interest to activities she previously enjoy doing;
  • sleep pattern changes and lack of sleep leading to problems with concentration, low energy, and restlessness; and,
  • physical changes seen by weight loss or loss of appetite, headaches, digestive problems, and body malaise.

Teenagers need the most help when they suffer from depression. Having these feelings for the first time could lead to destructive behaviors.

Depression Symptoms in Teens

Identifying the early onset of symptoms is crucial in teenagers because they may experience the phenomenon for the first time, leading them to panic.

A teenager may have 2 or more of these symptoms:

  • Suddenly becomes sad without actual reason
  • Lacks drive to move up and about, and gets tired easily
  • Either lacks sleep or sleeps too much
  • Loses weight or gains weight too much
  • Gets angry easily, insanely irritable, and very anxious
  • Could not remain focused for a long time
  • Isolates self from family and friends
  • Skips school and have falling grades
  • Engages in alcohol and/or drug abuse
  • Have suicidal thoughts and inclination to death
  • Inflicts harm to one's self

Depression is highly treatable, that is, if the victim recognizes and admits to having the illness. Loved ones can also help fight off this disease by recognizing patterns and signs of the diseases. To identify depression symptoms, it is a joint effort between the victim and the people that surround him.
