My Top Rated Skin Care Products

There are more skin care products than you can think about . The important thing about buying skin products is that they help your skin to look and feel better.

What has really been found to help your skin is an exfoliant such as alpha hydroxy acids or retinal elixirs. Antioxidants are important to repair your skin and help to replenish dead skin cells. As we age our skin looses it's elasticity and it does not replace it's cells as often as it did when we were younger. We are also dealing with sun damage and stress damage and that is were the antioxidants and vitamins come in. Amino acids help to stimulate new collagen.

Before I go any farther with my research I want to tell you I did my own experiment at home and found one product to stand out more than the others. It clearly tightened my wrinkles, brightened my skin tone and decreased the size of my pores. I tried four other products in my testing and the top winner is Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night, 1 Ounce.

Good Skin Care

You will want to think about price as well as effectiveness. There are many very good drug store brands. For years these products have gotten a bad rap but many actually contain the same ingredients as the more expensive department store brands. You just need to know what ingredients are important and go from there.

The most important thing you can do for your skin is to clean it gently, moisturize, drink lots of water, wear sunscreen always and do not smoke.

Do not go longer than 12 hours without using some kind of good product. This includes sunscreen. Use sunscreen 365 days a year.

In the winter months apply your skin care product after you wash or shower and your face is still damp. Don't ever over wash or scrub your face. Avoid picking at blackheads or pimples.

Get double use of your products by using those that combine sunscreen with moisturizers and anti-aging products such as Citrix Antioxidant Sunscreen available at Amazon. One female Dermatologist likes it because it contains "Micronized zinc oxide and octyl methoxycinnamate (sunscreens), green tea extract and vitamins A, C, E, and coenzyme Q10 and other antioxidants. According to one top dermatologist extra dry skin may benefit from reapplying moisturizers midday but be sure to avoid using more than two or more products at a time.

What I like about Citrix is that it combine sunscreen with the skin care I need.

Dr. Heidi Waldorf associate clinical professor of Dermatology at Mt. Sinai school of medicine likes La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-In Sunscreen Milk because it" soaks in like body lotion".

An inexpensive favorite of many dermatologists is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sun Block SPF 55. It is one of the most economical sunscreens available.

Dr. Waldorf also likes Blue Lizard Sport SPF 30 sunscreen because it contains pure Zinc Oxide and is extremely waterproof.

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser. If oily you can use a some mild skin detergent but with dry skin you may need something more gentle like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cream. A good inexpensive soap for acne is Coral Kavi Sulfur Soap or Sulfur Soap with Lanolin. Be sure you are not allergic to Sulfur before using either of these. If you need to use a non sulfur soap try Adovia Natural Dead Sea Mud Soap.

Most dermatologists recommend monthly or bimonthly peels. I like to use an at home peel of glycolic acid . For a more gentle peel you might like Philosophy The Microdelivery Peel or Oil of Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion Peel System

Dermatologists have found that despite claims otherwise only a handful of products actually change the condition of your skin permanently. The ingredients shown to help treat signs of aging include retinoids, alpha hydroxyl acids, azelaic acids, growth factors, hydroxy acids, azelaic acid, hydroquinone, kojic acid, peptides and salicylic acid.

One last product which I often use when on sale comes highly recommended and it is ROC Skincare. I like to use it at night. It has Retinal in it which helps keep your skin smoother longer.

Inexpensive Skin Lotions

I have days when I am in a hurry and have those days I use my go to moisturizers and then sunscreen. CeraVe is a very economical moisturizer that is filled with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. I mention below that I often use Amlactin at night because it has lactic acid that encourages cell turnover in your skin.

Top Recommended Skin Care Products

You will need to pick products that are good for your skin type. If your skin is very sensitive the acids may not be appropriate for you. Sometimes trial and error work best but do your research first before applying harsh peels.

Some of the more popular skin creams include RoC multi correxion night cream. It is a very good night cream according to skin expert Paula Begoun. It has alpha hydroxy acid, soy extracts, emollients and anti aging retinol, vitamin C and minerals. Also good for daytime use Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer SPF 15, which has retinol that helps with wrinkles and age spots as well as its own sunscreen with an SPF that is recommended by the American Cancer Society.

Oil of Olay is one of the oldest products available. It has continued to be developed with time and there are some very good products within this skin care line. One being Olay Total Effects Intensive Restoration Treatment with niacinamide. It is a good vitamin A derivative plus a great skin softening emollient. It was also highly recommended by Paula Begoun and Shape magazine editors. Paula has a website you can go to and read all her recommendations. She also wrote the book "Don't Go to the Makeup Counter Without Me". It has been in print for a while and I am not sure when it was last updated. Her website is well done.

If you are concerned about buying all green products you might like the free iphone app called Think Dirty. You can download it and then scan products or type them into your phone. It rates products from 1 to 10 . One is the safest and 10 has the most harmful chemicals. I also am a believer in moderation and common sense.

I like Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Night Resurfacing elixir with moisturizers. It does what chemical peels do but are very gentle and can be used nightly. It contains a great moisturizer; glycerin, a facial peel; glycolic Acid, grape seed extract and then Palmitoyl Pentapeptide 4, Camellia Sinensis, Leaf Extract, Pro-Vitamin B5 , amino-peptide and soothing Green Tea. So you have the vitamins, peel, antioxidants and moisturizers. With this product you must be careful to use sunscreen every day to prevent sunburn and facial damage.

Olay Regenerating serum is also an excellent product.

Another great product, with a low price tag, is Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night cream which also works well under makeup. It contains Retinol SA, which has been proven to be superior to other forms of Vitamin A such as Pro-Retinol and Retinyl Palmitate. It has been shown to penetrate the skin’s surface and to continue to renew the look of the skin throughout the following day. It also contains Glucose complex, a retinol booster to accelerate the skin’s surface activity against wrinkles and fine lines. Finally this product carries Hyaluronic Acid an actual chemical in the skin. It plumps, moisturizes and rejuvenates the skin. I even use plain Hyaluronic acid after I do a Glycolic peel monthly to soothe my skin.

Another nighttime cream I like to use is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-wrinkle cream. It is hypo-allergenic, fragrance free and alcohol free. It contains Pro-vitamins B5 and Vitamin E. It also contains Retinol, the purest form of vitamin A.

Finally a British company, Boot's, has come out with a top of the line product you may love, Boots no7 protect & perfect beauty serum.

The Video

Before you use any skin care product you need to take good care of your skin with proper washing daily. This includes removing all make up using gentle cleanser. Apply sunscreen every skinggle day.

Before and After Chemical Peel

Chemical Peel

There are safe over the counter chemical peels you can try. Never do this without following directions thoroughly and using lots of sunscreen after.

I have used glycolic, lactic and TCA but only with much trepidation. You may have very red, irritated skin for several days and then peel. Everyone reacts differently.

I am not recommending this only letting you know about availability . You can read my blog about peels. Just hit the link under the previous sentence.

Derma Micro Needle Roller

One last word. I ordered a Derma Micro Needle Roller from Amazon. . It actually works on your skin to increase collagen production, aid in delivery of skin creams and decrease wrinkles, and scarring. I have not used it but the reviews appear to approve it's effectiveness. Be sure to start slow. Don't push too hard or use too often, Keep your skin clean during process and clean product after use. I have one which I clean with hydrogen peroxide. I only use it once or twice a month. I see similar improvements as I do went I use a mild peel.

There is little pain as the needles are tiny. I only use it about once a month. I am not recommending them as a health specialist, but I have seen improvement in my skin especially when used with mild anti aging creams or Vitamin C Serums and mild alpha hydroxy acid serum or lactic acid serum. Again be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen.

Vitamin C Serum

A great morning product I would highly recommend is Vitamin C serum or elixir. Vitamin C and Retin A as well as non-prescription Vitamin A products have been found to actually erase fine wrinkles as well as reduce age spots. I store my vitamin C in the refrigerator.

The product I like is Vitamin C E and Ferulic Acid. It is available at Skin Ceuticals for $163 but I know Amazon does have many less expensive ones available for less than $25. I do use a less expensive brand and feel I get the same benefits. It is very soothing to the skin. I love to apply in the morning straight from the refrigerator. It feels awesome after a light evening peel. I wait for it to dry and then apply sunscreen.

I also want to mention Kojic Acid Soap or skin cream or Prescription Kojic Acid which is available to help heal age spots and acne. You need to be aware of possible allergic reactions and read all precautions as you should with any new product you use on your skin.

Higher Priced Luxurious Products

So you do want to spend some extra money. Here are some of the top products. Remember in most of these products a little goes a long way and the product may last you 6 months to a year.

Skin Medica Dermal Repair Cream

M.D. Forte Facial Cream lll

Skin Ceutical Daily Cream

Kinerase Cream

Murad Hydrodynamic Ultimate Moisture Cream

C E Ferulic Vitamin C Serum by SkinCeuticals

All of these provide anti-wrinkle properties and luxurious moisturizers. The two favorite are the Murad Hydrodynamic Ultimate Moisture Cream and MD Forte Facial Cream lll

Final Thoughts

All these products are highly effective and most come with a money back guarantee. Now you have to decide what is most important to you. The Citrix is good for am in that it doubles as an exfoliator and sunscreen. For night, look for something like a serum that works as you sleep like RoC or Olay resurfacing elixir. Sometimes in the evening when I am super tired I use Amlactin lotion on my face. It is quick and easy. It has lactic acid in it which works well on my skin. I do feel some tingling. It is very inexpensive at drugstores, etc. Happy Shopping.

Everyone has different types of skin sensitivity. I am in no way telling you to use a product or chemical peel. If you choose too it is solely at your own discretion.

Dana I would not mix any of the acids. Whenever you use one like lactic acid, your skin will react and possibly peel. You would not want to mix these or use consecutively until you know how your skin is going to react.

Great article. If I may, I'd like to request you right about ingredients we shouldn't mix? A friend of mine got a reaction because unknowingly she mixed two brands of products with ingredients that reacted and produce a rash on her face. It wasn't that the products were poor quality, it was mixing them what caused the damage. Hope you can talk about this in the future. Thanks again for your great article.
