Petai Health Benefits: Broad beans with a powerful natural remedy for many ills.
A petai pod a day keeps the doctor away.
One day a good friend of mine sent me an email with this subject: Do You Eat Petai? At that time I honestly didn't like petai. First because of its stinging smell when you eat it. Secondly it's due to my ignorance of the health benefits of petai.
By the way, what is petai? Maybe I can say that petai is a kind of broad bean. Petai, in Latin name it is called "parkia speciosa". The tree bears long edible beans with bright green seeds. These almond-like-seeds have a rather peculiar smell.
From petai trees villagers pick long petai pods emerge in a cluster of 7 - 8 pods where its beans or seeds reside within mature pods. The seeds are popular as a culinary ingredient in many Southeast Asia countries.
Well, shortly after thoroughly reading all the content of my friend's letter I began to realize how important petai is to our health. Following the reading I never look at petai in the same way again. I studied its health benefits and it turned out that petai is a powerful natural remedy for many ills.
You might have heard that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." But when we look at petai's benefits, probably we would like to change it into, "A petai pod a day keeps the doctor away."
What good is petai?
Petai is one of the best value foods. It is more nutritious than apple as you will get four times the protein, three times the phosphorus, twice the carbohydrates, five times vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals!
No wonder petai is popular among those who need much energy to do something. Research has proved that by just two servings of petai you will have enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. Why? Because the natural sugars plus fiber content in petai can provide an instant boost of energy.
However, energy is just one of many ways petai can help us keep fit. It can also help us overcome or prevent a lot of illnesses. So making petai your daily diet is a wise act.
Now let's see what is the usefulness of petai:
Petai carries a wide range of health benefits, from cases of anaemia to heartburn to constipation to ulcers to stress to strokes!
As it is high in iron, eating petai is able to stimulate the production of hemoglobin in your blood. But because it is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, make it perfect in lowering high blood pressure. Plus, this potassium-packed petai can boost your brain power. Two hundred students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams by eating petai, according to a survey.
Next, due to the high fiber content, petai can help you restore bowel action. Lack of eating fruit will result in constipation. You are unable to empty the bowels effectively. But you can overcome the problem by consuming petai.
If you're in a fit of depression, hangovers, and morning sickness, try to eat petai. Tryptophan content in petai will make you relax. Your mood will improve and you'll feel happier. You will also want to make a petai milkshake mixed with honey. This mixture helps hangovers (the feeling of sickness the day after drinking too much alcohol). Besides this, if you like snacking on petai between meals will help to avoid morning sickness.
What about heartburn? I consider petai "botanical antacid" as it has a natural antacid effect. So if you're suffering from heartburn, treat it by eating petai. My personal experience with heartburn showed that petai is a very helpful remedy.
Petai still has many more health benefits:
For instance, if you want to reduce swelling or irritation caused by mosquito bites, just rub with the inside of petai skin. Applying the insect bite cream to the mosquito bites is not necessary if you use petai. If you want to kill off a wart, petai is an effective natural alternative. Just take a piece of petai and place it on the wart. Do hold the petai in place with a plaster. And the wart will soon be killed off !
Did you know that petai is high in vitamins B12 and B6 that help calm the nervous system? Apart from this, when women are suffering from PMS (premenstrual syndrome), they'd better eat petai that will regulate their blood glucose levels and affect their mood.
A research found that obesity relates to high-pressure jobs. Pressure at work makes panic, and panic makes people eat more snacks like chocolate that will only make them fat. By snacking petai you can have a steady blood sugar level, thus avoiding panic-induced food cravings.
Many people experience a mood disorder when the seasons change. They feel depressed, sleep much, and have little energy. This is called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Petai can help SAD sufferers because it contains the natural mood enhancer i.e. tryptophan. Something similar but not same is stress. In moments of stress, your metabolic rate rises that result in reducing your potassium levels. Once again by snacking petai you can normalize your potassium levels.
Next. Petai is the only raw fruit that you can safely eat in case you're suffering from ulcers. It will neutralize over-acidity in your stomach. It will also coat the lining of the stomach thus reducing irritation. The texture of petai is smooth and soft so it's very good as a dietary food against intestinal disorders.
The last one. Are you trying to stop smoking? Eat petai as part of your regular diet. Its vitamin B6, B12, potassium and magnesium contents help your body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Together with this, you can also cut the risk of death caused by strokes which usually accompany smokers.
One more thing about petai.
Though petai has a wide range of health benefits, let me advise you to not consume it too much at a time. It's not good of consuming petai in excess because petai can harm our kidneys. Its substance will damage the kidney filter. The reason is because petai contains a lot of amino acids.
