Does Life Have Purpose?

Updated on December 6, 2009
k@ri profile image

Kari spends much of her time thinking about the meaning of life and time. She has concluded love is the meaning and time doesn't exist.

Is there purpose in all the random happenings of our lives, or do we live in a random world without purpose? Many people I have known believe we live in a random world without purpose. They believe life is an accident; fate is a fluke and the future a fling. They believe in coincidence. They believe existence is aimless, haphazard, and unintentional. We live…we die…that’s all there is.

I believe in purpose. I may not see the purpose of each of my actions…but I believe my actions have purpose in this world. I believe we live with intent, be that intent good or bad, conscious or unconscious. I believe our intent in life guides our purpose. Seemingly random acts are not actually random…coincidence does not exist…and life has purpose.

Our purpose in this life is driven by our intent...and our intent by our purpose.  It is up to each of us to decide what is our purpose.  We must then focus our intent on that purpose.  There is a reason why successful people are known as being "focused"...why their actions are called "intentional"...why they are known to have a "purpose".

Decide what you want in life...this is your purpose.  Focus on your purpose, understand that this is what you intend.  Focusing our intent on our purpose will bring about change in our lives.  Do not be hindered by the thought that what you want is too hard.  Focus yourself, believe in yourself, and see how change occurs.

I attempt to live with conscious intent. My intent is to spread love and acceptance in our world. I see too many people obsessed with possessions and power…people who mistakenly correlate their worth (and the worth of others) with their station in life. I intend to help people learn that life is not about what we have, but what we give. We all have the power to give; be it love, friendship, a helping hand, or something more tangible such as money.

I believe the more we give, the happier we are. Giving freely without expectations of payback brings a warmth to our lives that we can never achieve through possessions, power or station in life. I believe if you want happiness in life you must live to spread happiness in life. It is in our intentions that we direct our purpose. And, I truly believe that what we intend directs what we receive.

I could give you many examples of how seemingly random actions actually have purpose. It may take years to see the outcome of random happenings and recognize purpose. Looking back, over the years, I can see the patterns that connect various unrelated events in my life.

I can trace the events leading up to my present situation…falling in love with a wonderful man and moving to California…back 6 years at least. Seemingly non-connected actions and happenings, both good and not so good, all worked together to get me where I am today. I look back and trace the path from the past to the present and realize how intent and purpose have connected to bring me happiness.

Quantum mechanics teaches us that all things are interconnected. We can change the outcome of random events through conscious intent. In other words, our conscious intent creates our reality. Our intent and purpose guides how we respond to the world, and how the world responds to us. This is a proven fact in the world of quantum mechanics.

Many people do not believe in the power of conscious intent. They say they do not have the power to change their reality, much less the world. Quantum mechanics proves differently. Quantum mechanics shows we have the power to change our lives…our reality…our world. We only need to focus ourselves. Our consciousness is the guiding force of reality. When we focus on love our reality contains love. When we focus on hate our reality contains hate. We truly get what we think.

Focus and you may be able to see the center is not really moving.
Focus and you may be able to see the center is not really moving.

Live life with intent. Maintain your purpose. Change your reality. Take time daily to review your purpose and intent in life and focus your thoughts on it. Look at your actions at the end of the day to determine if they have reflected your intent and purpose. Think about how you may have effected the outcomes.  Review how changes in your actions may have changed the outcomes.  Look for the patterns in your life...are they what you want? If they are not what you want, change your focus...focus on your with purpose.

This is a fascinating topic and one that I am always toying with; I have spent a lot of my life wondering - and asking others - on their thoughts. I think spirituality is a deeply personal thing, and that it takes some degree of courage to spread your message - good luck out there!

Life does have a purpose. Kari did you know there is a physical and spiritual side of our self. What helped me to get to know my purpose was learning about God and his son, Jesus Christ, in the Holy Bible. The Jehovah Witnesses are very helpful in answering all bible based questions that you may have. I hope this information is helpful.

k@ri - I never said that but I'm very very happy that you found lxxy and that he found you. I wish you to experience the very best things in life!!!

I do agree with you. I make the same mistakes over and over again. I really thought I was unable to learn from them.

But then I learned this - there is an underlying cause for every mistake we make, we are programmed to do things in a certain way. If a mistake is not big enough it won't 'force' us to realize its real cause, the program. Without knowing it, we can't change it; and even if we know it sometimes we still can't change it and keep making the same mistakes. I had to make a very big mistake to eliminate my program (fear), and it wasn't even me who did this. It destroyed the very reason for which it was running.

Forgive my wafflings, please. I will shut up now. :D

      Love you two!

Pacal, We all make is the ability to learn from our mistakes that redeems us. I would like to say that I learn from my mistakes, but truthfully, sometimes it takes me several times of making the same mistake before I actually learn how to avoid doing it again. I do seem to have the ability to have a very selective memory...I remember the good and often gloss the bad. Focusing on the good helps...don't forget the bad, just don't let your focus be there. Mistakes are learning...just as a child we probably mistook our first few steps and fell down on our in life we often mistake things. As children we gained balance and as adults we still try to gain balance...maybe not physical, but emotional and spiritual. I believe that as long as we continue to learn and grow we are on the right track. Your avocation ensures that you will continue to learn. (I love that word "avocation"!) Hugs and love to you! :D

Yes. If we’re lucky, we’ll find out our purpose before we die. If not, we’ll find out after – and probably also learn if we accomplished it. Who knows, perhaps the alien, humanoid recreation director who worked for McCoy in one of the STAR TREK novels actually had the right idea: “We’re all part of God. Should we wish to do so, we can become Human for a time and while we’re Human, we forget we are part of God. When we die, we return to being part of God and can think about our experience and share it with others. Then we can do it again.” No, that isn’t verbatim, but you get the idea. I don’t remember the name of the story but it involved Scotty and an intelligent crystal spider.

Having life experience is said to be a good thing, but if it's made up of past mistakes, I wouldn't really like it to occupy too much space among my memories. But of course, I fully agree with you. A bit of life experience just in the fields that matter and then a whole lot of sweet memories would be an ideal admixture for me. :)

And that's an avocation for me, you know. Wrapping my mind around concepts. :)

      Have a wonderful day, k@ri.

dohn, Thanks, I hope people can realize that they do have the ability to make their reality what they want. It takes conscious thought and concentration, but it can be done. :D

Thanks Jewels, Quantum theory is indeed amazing. I love that science now states what I have known to be true.

Jill, I agree our lives have purpose, although we may not always see it. Thanks!

Violet, You are always such an inspiration to me. I agree, it is not "wrong" to focus on one's possessions, it's just that this focus so often makes people more dissatisfied and unhappy. I've had friends this way and they do not understand how they can have so much and still not be as happy and satisfied as others with less. Most people learn with time (and often loss) but it saddens me that they miss so much happiness in the meantime.

emohealer, You highlight some wonderful points...we either live by intent or default. We are all connected, and our realities interplay with each other's...the more people who intend a thing, the stronger that reality becomes. It is truly done one thought at a time. :D

Feline Prophet, I usually mourn their indifference...they are missing out on so much happiness. I only wish more people come to understand these truths.

shamel, I can tell you believe. We all have purpose, and whether we want to pay attention to it or not, each of us effects the reality surrounding us.

Thanks highvoltagewriter! I'm glad you liked it. :D

ocbill, I believe there is more to this universe and reality than we can understand. To think we are alone, I feel, is very egocentric of us.

Pacal, Remember the ones in our life are outweighed by the many...focus on the many. Life is a hard school, but we can persevere through consciously deciding what is important and focusing on it. We all make mistakes, but how else can we learn? I read a quote once that went something like this...Each mistake is painful as it happens, but together, over time, they combine to form life experience. Sounds like you need to "wrap your mind around it"...I don't believe in coincidence. Love & Hugs :D

Thanks ralwus! When are you coming out to visit us in sunny California? :D

Tom, Some people are more in touch than others, and your friend Lew sounds like on of these. The mind is a strange thing and able to interpret many more things than we are willing to accept. Our interconnectedness with each other and the world around us allows for much more than we are aware.

I used to work with a man named Lew Mirage. Like me he was an electrical engineer, but he was also a spiritulist minister. Any time I called him he immediately answered the phone by saying "Hi Tom what can I do for you?" This was way before caller ID.

I once saw him direct a freind at work who's mother in law had died. They couldn't find her jewelry. He had never been in her house but they called the freinds wife who was in her late mother's house. And Lew directed her directly to a small secret compartment in her mother's closet where she found her mother's jewlery.

k@ri - I so knew that you would answer this provocative question with a big yes. :)

It is so true that we have to direct our purpose with intent in a conscious effort. Yesterday, I wanted to die because of one person and today I want to live because of many. Would that I were strong enough to remain in this stance.

Spreading love is the most beautiful purpose you can have.

You are so right. I can also see the purpose of my past mistakes and I just wish this knowing would prevent me from beating myself up for recent ones.

I'm glad that you are happy now. I hope the new place is fantastic.

EDIT: I just started watching the quantum mechanics video and the guy uses the phrase 'wrap your mind around that'. I've not heard or seen this phrase for years and yet this very thing popped up in my mind two days ago and have been circulating in my thoughts since then. Coincidence? I don't know. :)

Very intense and well put! I applaud your well written article on intent and purpose! There truly is no such thing as coincidence adn nothing "happens" to us. We are all connected and we are all creating our own reality and experience. If we are not doing it with intent we are doing it by default....Thank you Kari for sharing this so well so that everyone who is willing to read can realize the opportunity and shift from default to intent thereby not only increasing the quality of their own life but with the intent of giving... to be that ripple into the connective nature of us all and creating a beautiful existence for us all, one thought at a time. Thanks Kari!!!!!!

K@ri: We both think alike and what I admire in you is that you are much younger than me and already have this spiritual maturity; I can imagine when you get to be a baby boomer, you will be in a truly peaceful place. I love "What The Bleep", its pure quantum physics with highly intelligent scientists shaking our reality.

And yes, intent, focus, and living from the heart is what creates our reality. I also agree too many are focused on posessions to impress themselves and others, not that its "wrong", but when it becomes a main focus in life, it ends up doing them in... with bills that can't be handled in the end, and losing track of what is important in life which is often free, such as kindness, personal growth, learning, and the like.

Thumbs up! Hope you shared it in Facebook, its a great message, good to spread the word and positive energy!
