Does Regenerate Toothpaste Really Work to Rebuild Enamel and Repair Tooth Enamel Erosion
Can this toothpaste regenerate lost and eroded tooth enamel?
If you are worried that your teeth are showing signs of tooth enamel erosion, can Regenerate toothpaste and booster serum kit by Unilever really help to rebuild enamel and strengthen teeth?
The toothpaste and booster kit are very expensive and if your tooth enamel has been eroded like those in the picture, you may well be desperate enough to fork out the cash. After all, the argument goes that the dental care needed to repair or replace teeth after the enamel has been eroded will be even more costly.
What are the claims that the manufacturer REALLY makes about the ability of Regenerate toothpaste to repair or replace lost teeth enamel? How does it work? What does it contain and what do others say about REGENERATE Enamel Science™ Advanced Toothpaste?

REGENERATE Enamel Science™ Advanced Toothpaste d Boosting Serum Kit
Regenerate toothpaste is made by Unilever and the whole kit consists of a tube of toothpaste which tastes and looks pretty much like other 'normal' toothpastes to me. The Boosting Serum Kit has two mouth trays for the upper and lower sets of teeth, a mixing stick, a tube of NR-5™ Serum and a tube of activator.
I haven't been able to find the whole kit on Amazon.com but you can buy it on Amazon.co.uk - see links below.

How Regenerate toothpaste and booster kit were developed
According to the Unilever site, studies were carried out laboratories in Port Sunlight in England, Milan and Shanghai, by an international research team together with Dentists from various centres and other international organisations over 9 years. The project was initially informed by advanced bone repair technology.
How the Regenerate system works in essence
They found that in combination calcium silicate and sodium phosphate create a crystal structure which mimics Hydroxyapatite, the main mineral in tooth enamel.
What the manufacturers claim Regenerate toothpaste can do
This is what Unilever claim this toothpaste can do for you on their website (notice the little star!)
- Will regenerate lost enamel* (the video states up to 83% within 3 days!)
- Will protect against cavities and strengthen teeth
- will helps to return teeth to their original colour - make them whiter
Advanced Toothpaste starts working immediately, from the first use and should be used daily, at least twice a day in place of your regular toothpaste.
* The little star is all important! Unilever explains that the toothpaste: "Helps to regenerate enamel by restoring its mineral content with regular use." and it "Acts on early invisible stages of erosion".
This information comes from the REGENERATE Enamel Science™ Advanced Toothpaste website
Who is at risk from loss of tooth enamel?
We have already established that these products only claim to regenerate tooth enamel in the early stages of erosion, and that this erosion is invisible, so who should use these toothpastes and kits?
According to Sensodyne Pronamel site , 1 in 3 of young adults and 37% of 11 - 13 year olds show signs of enamel erosion. So, about one third of the young as well as many older people.
Should everyone use products that promise enamel regrowth?

How much does the Regenerate Kit cost?
So how much will this set you back? In the UK the whole kit and caboodle will cost you £40 that's c. 56 euros or $62 (at the time of writing. Of course £40 was the price I paid in England when I bought the pack from Boots the Chemist. It is MORE expensive online and perhaps more expensive or cheaper in different countries.
How long does the Regenerate kit last?
My toothpaste, with sparing use, has lasted two months. You are supposed to use the whole serum every month so I guess they think that the toothpaste should last a month too.
My initial reservations about Regenerate Toothpaste and boosting serumd
- Upon closer inspection of the information on Unilever's website, instead of 'regenerating' we now find 'helps to regenerate' enamel.
- Secondly how long does it take? The information says that "It restores the mineral content of the tooth with regular use". The video above states that 83% is replaced within 3 days but my teeth look EXACTLY the same after almost two months.
- And finally we are told that it 'acts on early invisible stages of erosion'. In other words - use it even if you can't SEE that you need it.
- You can't prove whether the claim to strengthen your teeth is true as you can't test the strength of your teeth either before or after treatment
- It's expensive
I'm not the only skeptic - read what others have to say on this website: Testing Unilever Regenerate Toothpase and Serum
Can significant tooth enamel loss be regained?
So am I a sucker? Obviously my teeth are not in the "early .... stages of erosion" so no hope for me there.
What makes me think that Regenerate toothpaste might actually work?
As mentioned above, there has been serious clinical trials on bone and tooth regeneration that have been widely reported in serious newspapers and TV programmes. There does seem to be technology out there that really can regenerate bone and tooth enamel. It is also widely reported that the body itself can repair and replace lost tooth enamel - but equally, there are many reports that say "when it's gone it's gone".
So could my tooth enamel really grow back again?
Why toothpaste might be able to restore enamel
So what is the evidence that teeth can be strengthened and teeth enamel repaired by these new products? Breakthroughs have been widely reported so I've chosen just one account from Channel 4 News:
According to Science Correspondent Tom Clarke No More Dental Drilling and Filling temporarily fillings inserted into small cavities in the tooth can allow the tooth's enamel to grow back again. These trials have been endorsed by the University of Leeds Dental Instituteresearch team leader, Professor Jennifer Kirkham.
new compound, called P 11-4, painlessly fills the microscopic cavities and encourages enamel to re-form.
How does it work?
As the Regenerate team assert, a new compound, called P 11-4 copies the structure of tooth enamel. The various elements of the enamel protein scaffold is broken down into it's various components, called peptides which then merge together again themselves when they come into contact with the surface of the tooth.
Two key ingredients in the regrowth of enamel
New deposits of calcium are naturally created by the saliva in the mouth and Fluoride aids this new tooth enamel deposit to re-grow.

Why does tooth enamel become eroded in the first place?
And what can you do to protect your teeth?
How does tooth enamel become eroded?
How is tooth enamel eroded in the first place?
- Fizzy drinks and wine
- Acidic fruits like apples and citrus fruits
- Fruit juices
What you can do to avoide tooth enamel erosion
- Consume acid food and drinks less frequently
- Use a straw when drinking acidic drinks
- After eating acid foods or consuming acid drinks wash your mouth with water
- Use a soft toothbrush
- Wait a while (some say an hour) before brushing your teeth after eating or drinking acid foods or drinks
- Go to the dentist and make sure you ask them about enamel erosion
The Advertising Standarts Authority rule against Unilever
On the 24th of December the ASA sided with a complainant who highlighted the claims that "82% ENAMEL IS REGENERATED AFTER 3 DAYS" which featured in an advert.
Having looked closely at the wording and evidence the ASA told Unilever not to run the advert again. ('Damage' already done?)
Conclusion. Is it worth taking these new products seriously?
In the end I think not. If you buy the Regenerate kit each month at £40 from the age of 35 then you would have spent £14,400 by the age of 65 and may have nothing, or practically nothing to show.
On the other hand, you might argue that in comparison to the cost of dental treatment, if it did work then you wouldn't be seriously out of pocket.
My own feelings are that if your tooth enamel is already eroded then try some of the cheaper tooth pastes like Sensodyne Pronamel.
If you are young then prevention is better than cure. So how can you prevent enamel erosion in the first place?
