Does Tricare Supplemental Insurance Cover Chiropractic?

Updated on February 26, 2010

Tricare is a supplemental insurance that provides benefits for military personnel. It does have limits to what types of care that it covers. This article specifically addresses the question of whether or not chiropractic care is covered by the Tricare plan.

Tricare and Chiropractic Care

What is Tricare?

Tricare provides health benefits for military personnel. It was formally called Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS). Back in the 50's military personnel typically had to go to on-base medical facilities to seek treatment for their health problems. After World War II and the Korean War, congress passed a medical care act to help ease the congestion within the military health system. The Tricare system is an HMO and is designed to allow the utilization of the military heath care system with civilian systems in order to ensure the best possible care of the military. This system prevents congestion and waiting lines in order to get medical treatment on a timely basis.

Who is eligible for Tricare?

In order to take advantage of this health benefits system, you must serve or have served in the United States military. Family members of service personnel are also eligible to participate in this system.

These service personnel include the following:

  • U.S. Army
  • U.S. Air Force
  • U.S. Navy
  • U.S. Marine Corps
  • U.S. Coast Guard
  • Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service
  • Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association

Is Chiropractic covered under Tricare?

There is some degree of chiropractic care covered under the Tricare plan. The military has a number of sites currently that have chiropractic offices for military personnel treatment. Coverage for these doctors are covered under the Tricare plan. Outside coverage is not covered under Tricare. From the chiropractic Tricare benefits page:

"Chiropractic care received outside of the designated locations is not covered under the Chiropractic Health Care Program."

TRICARE covers Chiropractic for active duty and not for retired Military. I suggest shop around and ask for a Military discount with the Chiropractor. I know of sverla firends who have done that. Part of my retiremnt was basedon the TRICARE healthcare and I get worried when I see the Gov make statememts that would cut my benefits. I already use a TRICARE Supplemental Insurance plan

to pay the big difference standard does not pay for.

Available to TRICARE Beneficiaries, regardless of Rank, Service or Duty Status

If you are retired from the military, are a spouse of a retired military or an active duty service member, TRICARE eligible beneficiary, or a spouse of a disabled Veteran and have CHAMPVA benefits, you or your eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the TRICARE SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE PLAN.
