Updated on July 20, 2017

Some people put lotion on the top and bottom of their feet. However, podiatrists advise patients not to put lotion between their toes. Do you know why you should not put lotion between your toes? The simple answer is that there is already plenty of moisture between the toes. If you put lotion between your toes, you will only be adding extra moisture.

What's the harm if you do put lotion between your toes?

Do you remember what your skin looks like if you stay in the bathtub or in the swimming pool too long? Your skin becomes wrinkled, and it looks like it will split or crack. That's exactly what your skin will look like between your toes if you put lotion there.

Foot doctors warn that extra moisture between your toes could lead to an infection, and the infection between the toes could become a serious problem. Therefore, in order to prevent the infection from happening in the first place, avoid putting lotion between the toes.

Suggestions for foot care if you are a diabetic

The American Diabetes Association suggests that if you a diabetic, you should pay special attention and give extra care to your feet. Everyone should avoid putting lotion between their toes, and this is especially a caution for diabetics.

The American Diabetes Association advises everyone to keep their feet clean by washing them every day. It is extremely important to dry your feet thoroughly because any moisture left between your toes could cause a fungus to develop.

While is it perfectly fine to put lotion on the top of your feet and on the soles (bottom of your feet), it is not perfectly fine to put lotion between your toes.

Remember to put lotion on the top of your feet and on the bottom of your feet, but do not put lotion between your toes.

WOW! Thanks for your feedback that includes your admission and your vow to stop. Hopefully, it won't be hard to break the habit.

Margaret, the whole thing makes a lot of sense. I always wash between the toes, but it seems sensible that putting lotion there could be problematic. I'm going to stop doing that. :)
