Serbian Association of Addicts - SUZA
Shelter for all
SUZA Association of Addicts in Serbia, operates with very few personnel. We transformed from the "project" of "MetadonPlus" name- to the SADA - on English (Serbian Association of Addicts).
- "SUZA" (in further text SADA) is now very active, and in phase of reorganization. But, meanwhile, SUZA (or SADA on English) continued with the excellent work.
Project of implementation of Slow-Release (Controlled-Release) capsules of morphine-sulfate called S.R.O.M (Slow-Release Oral Morphine) treatment was first generated by the SADA.
- SADA is the only "group of citizens" that hasn't been legaly registered on the "national list of NGO's" that is a member of EHRN. SADA (Serbian Association of Addictis - "SUZA") has also gained a lot of support all over the world.
- From the "US Harm Reduction Coalition", with its representative Dr. Alan Clear, trough the "AREAL" NGO in Slovenia, to the "ENCOD" (European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policies) as well as the "EHRN" (EuroAsian Harm Reduction Network) "SUZA" gained strong support for implementing their projects of "DropIn Center", "Alternative to Methadone", "The Exchange One", and "Support4Addicts" and many other.
- I represent You, now, the project of SUZA/SADA:
DROP IN CENTER PROJECT by "SUZA"
DropIn Center : Ground Floor
Project : DropIn Center
When You see people that rummage through garbage, looking anything that they could eat... When You see addicts that shoot oral medicines from dirty syringes... When You see addicts that lost everything, and now their are capable of doing anything for their daily "score" - for they daily dosage. That is a picture of mentally ill persons! They are potential threat for community - yes, but they have their rights!Right for a life, right of choice, right to be treated same as anyone else...
The real problem is that, people in Serbia, generally, are attached to one stigmatic way of thinking - "once addict - always addict" , and second major issue that is not just a problem in Serbia, but it represents a problem in many countries - "OST Opiate Substitution Treatment is an Government way of giving free drug to drug addicts. Methadone, and similar drugs are same as heroin - and states, countries, with Methadone program have Government that's poisoning their own nation with free drug." These kind of stigmas, and similar way of thinking brought us to the situation where addicts, HIV+, HCV+ (Hepatitis positive, alcohol addicts, and just "simple" homeless people - are "under the same roof" , (not)treated in pattern, threw out on street even after short detoxification, being hospitalized, getting regular free meals, free medications, and have 12 days of partial-normal life.
Project : DropIn Center
The idea came just from the last mentioned part, "...threw out on street even after short detoxification, being hospitalized, getting regular free meals, free medications, and have 12 days of partial-normal life." So, the main problem is that people whether sick(ill) or not, don't have a place to go when night come, when winter places down ... When people die from cold. That is, what I call - "stupid death". In order to give a chance to those people, to have an decent life, to be clean, and have place to sleep I've created an project that can do exactly that.
"DropIn Center" - would be an excellent solution for this problem. With 2 floors, and everything that homeless people need - "DropIn Center" would be ideal solution. The difference, from ordinary shelters would be that ill people would be separated from those who are not, until there is no possible risk of spreading the decease. After few interviews, in face to face with those who live life on street, I've realized that this project is just what Serbia need. One is not enough - but every route has to have an start.
Reception, administration, and meeting part - would be based on ground floor. Also here would be held every other activities/programs arranged for those who are in "DropIn Center".
First floor would have several beds, small kitchen, and bathroom supplied with everything that homeless people, that are not threat to each-other, should have. In same time, those people would be included in different programs of re-socialization, and educational programs - different kind of courses where they could get some basic or intermediate knowledge for getting a job.
Second floor would be for those who are ill, have an virus or suffer from addiction. They would have an detoxification program guaranteed, and complete health care needed for their needs. Afterwards, when they pass the detoxification program, they would visit specialist for further options of treatment. If they accomplish everything what "DropIn Center" requires from them and what specialist told to them, they would have to stick to the therapy and go onto medical exams whenever it's required for them. Occasionally "DropIn Center" itself would held a right to do a random test to whoever they want, if it's needed - whole personnel, staff, and patients will be tested on drugs in order to maintain the goals of project/center.
