Early Menopause On The Rise.
Since the last few years it has been observed that women attain menopause much earlier than the actual age when it normally should occur that is between forty-five to fifty years. It has really been a matter of serious concern for the medical field. The age of menopause has advanced between thirty-five and forty-five years and sometimes the age is even as low as twenty and twenty-five years of age.
Menopause is the time in a women's life when her menstrual cycle eventually stops and her chances of conception in a natural way becomes nil. The onset of menopause brings with it several health problems like osteoporosis, hot flushes, sleep disorders and even memory loss. Bone health reduces and women may experience pain in their joints and are also make them more vulnerable to fractures due a drastic fall in the level of a hormone called estrogen. Estrogen is a female sex hormone which controls female sexual develpoment which includes the development of female sex organs and secondary sexual characteristics such as breast development.
Estrogens are synthesized mainly by the ovary and they suppress the process of the breakdown of bone cells. Menopause can happen naturally or in the case of surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries which happens mainly incase of any severe type of infection, formation of fibroids, growth of tumour, development of cancer or in the case of severe prolapse which usually ocurrrs post delivery.
The figures of women already who come under the menopause group is alarming in India. Under the age group of thirty to thirty- four years it is 3.1% and 8% between thirty-five to thirty- nine years of age group and by forty-eight to forty-nine years nearly 2/3rds of women attain menopause.
What is the cause of premature menopausei in women? There are several reasons for this cause one such reason could be early occurrence of menarche that is the start of menstrual cycle in girls. The number of eggs in a women are fixed and it is linked to the number of menstrual periods a women undergoes. The lining of the uterus prepares for the implantation of the embryo only when ovulation has occurred. If implantation does not happen within two weeks of ovulation then menstruation takes place or the lining will bleed out of the body.
Besides many women in present times go in for infertility treatment to assist them in pregnancy. The reasons may vary from insufficient or lack of sperm count in men or problems in egg formation in women. However, in the course of treatment for infertility women undergoes treatment to produce more mature eggs so that their chances of conception are high. But, in the process women tend to loose more mature eggs per cycle which automatically paves the way for premature menopause.
Early menopause can also be caused due hereditary or congenital factors. If a women had menopause early in life then it is quite possible that even her daughter might also have an early menopause. In the present age it has been observed that family planning measures are also responsible for causing early menopause. In the past women had many children on an average atleast five and it helped her to have her menstrual cycle for many years. When a woman conceives then her eggs are conserved since they do not menstruate during pregnancy. Hence a woman had a longer reproductive ability since her menstrual cycle was on and she has not attained menopause.
Nowadays due to economic and health reasons couples prefer smaller families. Since women are also focussed more on thier career they don't prefer to have more than two children. Hence her eggs are not conserved and she tends to loose them in evrey menstrual cycle and attains premature menopause.Besides lifestyle changes have taken place due to economic liberalistion and women empowerment and the huge influence of western culture which is being easily absorbed by Indian women. Many women have taken up smoking and those who are regular smokers are at a high risk of attaining early menopause.
