Eating Bacon Can Cure Your Hangover

Updated on January 17, 2012

Oh No Not Another Hangover

Hangovers are the pits but I guess it is just the bodies way of protesting at you for filling it with bucket loads of poison. Most of us have experienced them at one time or another and we might all have our favorite hangover cure that we swear by but bacon, believe it or not has been tried and comes up a winner.

A lean bacon sandwich on brown bread is not as silly as it sounds. The saltiness of the bacon combined with the bread releases energy slowly and will have you feeling better, that is if you can actually keep it down. Drinking plenty of water is also a must because the alcohol will have dehydrated your system and this is where the salty bacon helps as it will make you a bit thirsty.

The alcohol acts as a diuretic, so along with lots of fluid, your body has lost electrolytes like potassium and sodium. You will most likely be feeling weak and shaky, nauseous and head-achy. You might feel like you need a hug but trust me, no one will want to hug you smelling like last nights night club.

Some swear by having a drink the next morning as a cure for a hangover and this might work but in the long run is not a good idea as the hangover will catch up with you at some point. The hangover essentially is your body suffering alcohol related withdrawal symptoms and you might feel anxious along with feeling very sick and throwing another drink into the mix should be avoided. The alcohol consumed on top of a hangover will only make you feel better temporarily. So after you have eaten the bacon sandwich try to also eat or drink something (other than alcohol) that makes you feel happy.

Chicken Soup Is not Only Good For The Soul

Or you could try this hangover cure, one that could appeal depending on your condition on the morning after the night before. Simply snip the top off a pack of 2 minute noodles and add some finely shredded cabbage, some shredded cooked chicken, a chopped chilli or some fresh ginger. Other vegies are fine too but the cabbage is rich in folic acid and great for energy production and making red blood cells to circulate oxygen around your bod. The chicken is great for much needed protein and the chillies and ginger will activate your endorphins. the liquid in the soup is vital for fluid replacement but I would still have a big glass of water as well.

I love a vegemite sandwich when I have a hangover or if I can get someone to drive me to the shop, a big serve of battered fish and chips. Now I know why I never felt any better, it was all that saturated fat and not the alcohol that made me feel so ill. LOL!

Don't try These Hangover Cures

A big fry-up even though you think it's what you want all that grease will only make you feel worse.

Salt cod poached in milk and served on toast Celebrity chef Keith Floyd said this was his favorite cure. I only have one word YUK!

A glass of pickle juice is popular with Russians

Tripe Soup if you are Turkish you've most likely tried this one

Dried Bulls Penis Sicilians swear by it

Yeah I agree! everything is made better with bacon so it fits that it would make us better ...right?! My favorite is chopped bacon and onion fried together + s&p of course, mixed with sour cream and dolloped on top of Idaho potatoes. yum! :)

Hi Athena, perhaps banana & bacon combined ? although I am not sure I would feel like either when suffering from a hangover. Might give them a try this New Years. Thanks for your comments :)

Thanks also for your advice JCielo I think sometimes the best way is just to not drink too much, however eating while you are drinking helps greatly. :)

Perhaps the best thing is to prepare yourself the night before.

I've found that eating plenty whilst you are drinking helps to stave off a hangover.

And leaving a pint glass of water with an aspirin or similar painkiller on your bedside cabinet to take before you go to sleep certainly helps too.

Loved your hub. Voted up and useful.

I've also heard that a banana is an excellent hangover cure. I know they have potassium so maybe they also have other minerals that our body is deficient of as well.

      Nice hub.Voted up and Useful.
