Alternative Names

Guyabano tea leaves are usually dried first before they are used to make a beverage. The plant that produces these leaves with cancer fighting properties is also known as the soursop or graviola.

Boiled Guyabano Leaves Tea Health Benefits - Where to Get It

Guyabano (soursop) grows naturally in Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean, where it is known for its medicinal qualities. If you do not live in an area where this tree grows naturally, you can get dried leaves online, at retailers like Amazon.

Instructions

Guyabano tea is easy to make.

  1. Simply add a few dried guyabano leaves to a pot with boiling water.
  2. You should turn off the flame when the water is hot enough and cover the pot, leaving the graviola to steep in the hot water for at least two minutes.
  • You can adjust the number of leaves you place in the pot to your taste.
  • People who leave the tea in there for longer, for up to thirty minutes, say that you get most of the nutrients out of it when you leave it to “draw” for that amount of time.
  • You can enjoy the tea cold, so don’t think that it will lose its taste or its powerful effects. You can continue to enjoy the nutritional benefits for up to eight hours after first making the tea.

Boiled Guyabano Leaves Tea Health Benefits - Sweetened or Unsweetened Tea: Which is Better?

This drink can be enjoyed sweetened or unsweetened.

  • Unsweetened or with sugar. Some people have their tea without added sugar because they prefer that taste or are diabetic, while others like to add a teaspoon or two of brown sugar. You can also use agave.
  • Honey. In order to get additional health benefits from your tea, you can sweeten it with honey instead of sugar. The best type of honey to use is wild honey. Honey is a good remedy for sore throats, it helps to keep your blood pressure stable, and it boosts immunity.

Reverse Cancer with This Healing Tree

The Leaves Calm Nerves and Kill Cancerous Cells

  • Boiled guyabano leaves are a powerful anti-inflammatory. Studies have also shown that the tea contains natural substances which kill cancer cells. For example, the acetinogens have been shown to be effective against cancer in breast cells (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9207950?dopt=Abstract). It helps to kill tumors which have shown resistance to a variety of drugs.
  • The leaf extracts inhibit the activity of the herpes simplex 1 virus.
  • Extracts of this plant have also shown a positive effect on mood, lifting depression.
  • Compounds that are found in the plant help to calm the nerves as well.

A Customer Review

"I take this and curcumin, flax seed oil, and selenium as supplements to combat a 10-year battle with cancer. They seem to have stopped it in its track along with prayer and a vegetarian diet. I don't even see the oncologist anymore."

      jtrader 15 months ago

      Hi Elizabeth,

Some doctors advise that people who have movement disorders should be careful with using Guyabano. Since you have muscle spasms, I would not recommend that you start drinking the tea without your doctor's supervision.

When making a pot of tea for use as an herbal supplement with cancer, add 15 dried Guyabano leaves to every liter of hot water. Drink one cup three times a day.

If a person feels hungry after having a cup of guyabano tea, it is usually recommended that they wait about half an hour before eating.

i am acidic and take (omprazole+SODIUM BICARBONATE) can I drink gayubano leaves tea

    • jtrader profile image
      Author

      jtrader 15 months ago

      Hi Myrna,

It is my understanding that Omprazole actually helps people who are on chemotherapy and are using guyabano leaves tea or juice to help kill cancer cells. This is because Omprazole helps to prevent injury to gastroduodenal mucosa.

Remember that guyabano juice is not a substitute for the cancer treatment that your doctor may have prescribed. If you are on chemo and are using guyabano, Omprazole can help to reduce some of chemo's side effects.

Sodium bicarbonate and guyabano are both alkaline. Sodium bicarbonate helps to reduce acid and there is some evidence that it can help to kill cancer cells. Dr. Tullio Simoncini in Italy has done research on this and has managed to eliminate tumors with the help of sodium bicarbonate.

Please discuss this further with your doctor. Best wishes for your health.

i have severe constipation and heavy bleeding with blod clots, can i drink guyabano leaves tea?pls i need answer thank you

    • jtrader profile image
      Author

      jtrader 14 months ago

Your doctor would have to determine the underlying cause of the heavy bleeding. It would not be good for you to start drinking guyabano leaves tea or using any other herbal remedy, without finding out what was causing the heavy bleeding.

You haven't made it clear if it's heavy menstrual bleeding or rectal bleeding associated with the constipation.

There are herbal remedies which help with heavy bleeding that is due to fibroids, for example echinacea. However, you need to know why you are bleeding so heavily. Sometimes heavy bleeding during menstruation is caused by anemia.

Eating guyabano fruit can help to prevent constipation, since it's a fruit and is high in fiber. However, it is not used as often as a treatment for constipation.

Hello, good evening. I just want to ask.

I am diabetic, My FBS was 10.8 on January 2016, and became 7.8 after two weeks and recently my FBS is 6.24....and i am still taking 500mg metformin. Can i stop taking Metformin and drink guyabano leaves?

How many leaves? How many glasses should i drink everyday and before bedtime?

Please hear me out. Thank you.

      jtrader 13 months ago

      Hi Jane,

Metformin has a lot of benefits for you. It helps to reduce the amount of insulin that you have to take. It also helps you to lose weight - a plus if you have diabetes.

The drop in your FBS shows that the medication is working. Do not stop taking Metformin without speaking to your doctor. It really helps with keeping your blood sugar low.

According to the Department Of Science and Technology in the Philippines, guyabano has a similar effect to Metformin. You don't want your blood sugar to drop too low because you are taking both. If you wish to take the tea along with Metformin, start with a low dosage of 5 dried Guyabano leaves to every liter of hot water. Drink one cup three times a day.

If you have access to Moringa (Malunggay) you can use that with the Guyabano leaves as well.

      Hi Emma,

Guyabano is not known to interfere with electrical impulses within the body. As such, the bradycardia shouldn't be made worse by the tea.

It is worthy of note that some people drink guyabano to expand the blood vessels.

    • jtrader profile image

      jtrader 11 months ago

      Hi Eric,

Guyabano is a powerful medicinal herb. I wouldn't drink it every day in place of coffee. With most medicinal plants, you try not to use them every single day, unless it's a case where you have had cancer, for example and it is in remission and you want it to stay in remission.

Many people who drink herbal teas tend to rotate them. So, for example, if you have problems with nausea and drink ginger tea for 2 weeks, you would switch to mint tea for the following two weeks.

Some people prefer the dried leaves- they think it is better to make herbal tea with dried leaves than green leaves. By all means, use your dried leaves.

People who are using ground dried leaves should keep in mind that when compared by weight or even teaspoon for teaspoon, a teaspoon of ground dried leaves will be stronger than a teaspoon of green leaves.

Hi, i've been taking guyabano tea for more than a year now. Before i was diagnosed as diabetic and hypertensive, I've been prescribed by my doctor to take metformin for sugar and lozartan for my hypertension and the doctor said that it's for lifetime. Then i started taking guyabano tea, so far i got a normal BP and sugar. Is it necessary or is it fine for me to continue drinking it. The thing is i heard from somebody that drinking guyabano tea for 3 years can lead to dialysis. Is This true? how often should i take it? do I need to stop this right away? please tell me the right thing to do...Thanks

    • jtrader profile image
      Author

      jtrader 10 months ago

      Hi MannyC,

I am glad that your BP and sugar are now normal. According to the Department Of Science and Technology in the Philippines, guyabano has a similar effect to Metformin. You don't want your blood sugar to drop too low because you are taking both.

You can cut back on your consumption of guyabano tea. Drop it to every other day and make a note of your BP and sugar with that. Take a copy of those records when you go to see your doctor and let them know of the supplements that you are using.

The aim is not to take guyabano every day. People who take it every day usually do so to help in their fight against cancer, so they only do so until the cancer goes into remission. After that they adjust how often they take it.

You can also consider alternating guyabano with other herbs that are known to reduce blood sugar levels, such as bitter melon (Jamaican cerasee).

Metformin can gradually irritate the intestinal wall. Talk to your doctor about steps you can take to help keep the lining of your intestines healthy.

Actually what bothers me is I heard from somebody that taking guyabano tea for 3 consecutive years can harm and can lead to dialysis, Is it true? at the moment I'm taking guyabano tea alone for a year now. Is it necessary for me to stop right away or can you tell me what's the best for me. Thanks in advance.

      Hi Manny,

No, you shouldn't be taken guyabano tea for years straight without a break. I do not recommend that you use any herbal remedy for such a long period like that. Consider taking a break every three months and using bitter melon instead.

Dried leaves are better than green leaves. That's better for the liver. The teabags usually contain dry leaves so they would be the same as drinking leaves you dried yourself. Stick to the regimen that has already been working for you in terms of drinking the tea several days after receiving chemo.
