The Discovery Statement

The crux of the EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique can be summed up in one statement.

"The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system."

This is what Gary Craig, founder of EFT calls the "discovery statement".The entire system of Emotional Freedom Techniques has been developed by Gary Craig.

He has years of experience in EFT and on his website you can find case study after case study of thousands of people who have used this self help technique and are saying it worked wonders.

Here I'll try to give a brief overview of what the EFT system involves. It is truly so simple and easy that anyone can start using it as soon as they know how, and they will see some startlingly fast results.

While the EFT system is based on removal of negative emotions from the body, since the emotions can influence the physical medical conditions, they tend to improve as well.

Thus the emotional energy release often gives way to physical healing. Although the effects of EFT differ on a person to person basis.

The Basic Recipe

Essentially EFT is based on two sciences, names Mind Body Medicine and Acupuncture without using needles. The points that you must tap are derived from the energy meridians that are used in Acupuncture. While the concept of the mind and body being essentially energy form the basis of the treatment.

The EFT treatment procedure is divided into 4 steps which form part of the Basic Recipe. This is aimed at any mental or physical problem that you are trying to tackle. Success lies in the fact that you get as specific about the problem as possible.

Step One

The Setup : This step consists of addressing the problem directly despite having doubts about the healing process. It serves to open you up to the healing process of energy systems as used by EFT. You need to say an affirmation such as,

"Even though I have this (mention problem here in as specific terms as possible) I deeply and completely accept myself"

At the same time continuously rub the pressure point known as the Sore Spot or the other one called the Karate Chop point. This helps in overcoming the Psychological Reversal that you may have. Meaning wanting to be cured, but also wanting to hang on to the disease or emotion.

Step Two

The Sequence : This involves tapping at least seven times on all the pressure points while repeating a short reminder phrase to focus on the problem being addressed.

The pressure points are called Eye Brow (EB), Side Eye (SE), Under Eye (UE), Chin (Ch), Collar Bone (CB), Under Arm (UA), Below Nipple (BN), Thumb (Th), Index Finger (IF), Middle Finger (MF), Baby Finger (BF) and Karate Chop (KC).

It is important to follow the whole sequence when you are doing the basic recipe initially. After some time you will be able to find the ideal pressure points that your body best responds to and may even want to let a few get skipped. That is for later, when you are learning do all the points and do them in sequence.

Step Three

The 9 Gamut process : This involves continuously tapping on the Gamut Point while repeating these nine actions. They may seem unusual and even weird, but they are all very scientifically proved and theu included in the process.

1. Eyes closed -> 2. Eyes open -> 3. Eyes hard down right -> 4. Eyes hard down left -> 5. Roll eyes in clockwise circle -> 6. Roll eyes in anti clockwise circle -> 7. Hum 2 seconds of a song -> 8. Count one to five -> 9. Hum 2 seconds of a song again.

All through the time you are doing steps 1 to 9 you need to tap the Gamut Point non stop. This ten second process actually fine tunes your brain to the problem and the release of the emotion.

Step Four

The Sequence :As described in step two, tap all the points in sequence for 7 times.

How do you use the Basic Recipe?

The method described above as the Basic Recipe is a useful tool to deal with intense emotions. You can use the steps given above with a variety of feelings and affirmations. Some of these affirmations could deal with

  • Addictions you would like to overcome
  • Aid to overcome mental barriers
  • Business related stress
  • Changing your attitude towards a particular person/thing
  • Communication skills and issues
  • Dealing with Criticism
  • Enhancing your Creativity
  • Decision making process
  • Expanding your horizons and expectations
  • Freedom from Guilt
  • Forgiveness
  • Health related issues
  • Money and financial stress release
  • Mental anguish or physical pain
  • Dealing with Rejection
  • Even Spiritual Growth.

These situations tend to bring in negative emotions and feelings into our lives. You need to make a clear affirmation using the above given example. Now use this affirmation in the Basic Recipe. Use it regularly till you feel the healing release of the negative emotions associated with the situation. Then move on to the next issue you want to deal with.

Yes Ixxy, more than one system of alternate healing maintains the fact that every little thing has energy even an unspoken thought in your mind.

So the way you use this energy makes all the difference to your life and health.

Reading the description of this technique I realize I've heard of this before, but in a different context.

Our thoughts are alive, wielding either positive or negative energy. The mind and body can work in harmony so well together, and I can see how this treatment for emotional well being can be so useful for millions.

Hey Cashmere! I've heard of this, and while I would agree that the body's condition can dictate the strength or intensity of emotions (ie PMS) I would say that the opposite is more true. The internalized emotions will inhibit the proper functioning of the body. To find a way to release these emotions, to 'fine tune' the mind and body is a great thing! Thanks Cashmere!

Yes, essentially the way your body (or energy field) perceives the energy of the event causes the discomfort it gives you.

So Craig is saying that the emotions you feel when something upsetting happens are caused by disruption in the energy system not the event itself?
