Epilepsy, When You Want To Work But Disability Denies It.

Updated on July 11, 2012

There are many people who have epilepsy. Some have it worse then others, it is just a fact of life. Sometimes seizures are so bad, that surgery is the only thing that will keep a person alive. The seizures get so bad, a person stops breathing after a seizure. Sometimes one minute, sometimes two minutes. After two minutes, the people in the hospital help you breath. They call it "bagging"

After surgery, the seizures sometimes stop, for a year or so. Then they begin to creep up on you again. Or, you can start to have problems. Some of my hubs have been written about these problems. They can go away or stay. Or new ones come. That is just the way it is.

Back to disability. Disability has a program, that can teach you how to get back to work. They do this for a lot of people. The first thing they do is send a nurse practitioner to your house. She talks to you, but that is all she does. Then she talks to your doctor, and looks over your medical history. After that, she makes a choice. This time, she said "NO". So, I did not qualify for the "Work Program".

But, that will not make me suffer. No, it will not. I have felt bad long enough. If one can wait another year, it is OK. Yes, there have been problems, but they have been taken care of. One more year, is only one more year. No, it will not defeat me! Not this time. I will try again, and again......

I am also proud to call you my friend. The eeg is the measurement of the brain waves. I will keep trying, and will also keep praying for your son. Maybe for now, I can spend some time on the website. :)

Just now seeing this Hub--was not getting my notifications or I would have commented sooner.

I know you are a strong and determined woman, we have agreed enough and debated enough to know that. I understand your determination and your frustrations, especially being denied access to the work program by one nurse making one visit. I may have told you, possibly not, but my son is living on the edge of having epilepsy as a result of the accident he was in back in 2007. He was put on anti-seizure medication as soon as they saw the brain wave patterns. He has not had a seizure, but he will be taking the meds the rest of his life. In addition, he asked his neurologist to run the test (I can never remember if it is the eeg or the ekg) anyway, the doctor said he would have to take him off his meds for a week and the scar tissue might prevent accurate test results and he then added he did not want to do that because"I think you are at high risk for seizures." It has been five years since the accident and so far no seizures, so we keep praying. Like you, he has been through a lot and like you he has had trouble finding employment. I am certain you will because you are a determined person and I am proud to call you my friend.

Mhatter, I understand, I will pray for you. The words you type are not only words, they are much more then that. They are beautiful poems. They reach out and touch the heart of the reader. I read all of them, but do not comment as much as I should. I will keep praying for you

      God bless you my friend.

Jackie thank you, the thing is, some people fake having disabilities. They are the ones who steal from people who truly have disabilities. The back to work program, helps people who have disabilities, start to get off disability and find jobs. I know there are still problems, but if I start to show improvement then I can start working, find a job even if it is part time, maybe it will help someone else who needs disability.

This is horrible and it is not right. Our government goes out of its way to help people not even citizens, hand outs at our expense and then things like this are just not right. I have heard of other things like this too. One man with cancer. One woman with hands so horrible looking with arthritis it was unbelievable was denied. It is so disgusting and I feel so bad for you. I have no idea what anyone can do. Letting others know though is an important step. They would love for you to keep quite. good for you for telling.

Like you said sometimes it is so much worse for some than others. Every time my nephew would get a job he would have a seizure, miss a few days, and be "let go". An uphill struggle for all of us.

. say to those with fearful hearts, Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.
