Ergonomics Made Simple - Posters for Computer Work and Workplace Safety

Updated on November 21, 2015

Work, work, work, oh how we love to hate the four letter "work". Yet, work could be better for all of us, if we only knew how to work. Let's forever change the work environment and actively seek out better ways to work ergonomically. For you see, the profitability of a company is all about its people. The human body was built to toil (aka work).. Sitting for long stretches of the day without stretching is not what fitness professionals (or even medical professionals) would recommend. Let's review a new piece of office furniture that will help you and your team members work more efficiently by engaging the proper muscles (but you must stay tuned until the very end!.) In the meantime, let's review ergonomic posters that encourage proper posture. The posters range from serious risk management poster to fun colorful posters that not only remind you that your posture is critical but also serve to motivate you to hear those words from your mother and father from long ago about sitting up straight and eating your vegetables!

Fun Motivational Ergonomic Work Poster

Let's start with my favorite poster. Yes, it includes a computer from the iconic brand of Apple but is also in a silly and colorful manner reminds us the contortions we place upon our body in order to enjoy that connectivity that the Apple computer provides.

Ah, yes, the smartphones do offer a more versatile method to enjoy our connectivity but all too many of us are reliant upon the computer desktop.

Future of the Connectivity

I envision the future of connectivity to the desktop to go the way of the horse and buggy. Why? Because of voice activation software. The computer desktop as we know it will be reserved for graphic artists and finance and data architects. The common office worker will be tied only to voice activation and may be saddled with a headset but not a desktop.

In the meantime, let's explore the other ergonomic posters that will assist us enslaved captives to desktop technology.

Zero Tolerance Bullying - Nominal Tolerance for Improper Posture

"Are we really that ignorant in our society to spend thousands of dollars on technology and not have in place two basic posters reminding computer users that we have zero tolerance for bullying and that our body has nominal tolerance for improper posture?!"

Caution - Desk Top Work and Computer Stations Tend to Make Us Hunchback

As we have discussed on Easy Exercise, all too many of us fall prey to hunchback posture. While I jokingly refer to this as Einstein's hunch, it is a serious problem as the neck, should and back problems will result.

Yes, "result" - there is no getting around it, our body was never designed to hunch over technology.

To combat this negative result, we must change our posture.

Placing reminders around the workplace, or snapping a photo of a perfect posture to add to your personal computer desktop is a simple way to remember, that a healthy body need good nutrition, regular exercise and proper posture.

Libraries across the globe, I have found to be deficient in training: 1.) against cyber bullies and 2.) proper posture.

I find it abhorrent that the taxpayers support the libraries with computers without any instructional posters. Are we really that ignorant to spend thousands of dollars on technology and not have in place two basic posters reminding computer users that we have zero tolerance for bullying and also your body has nominal tolerance for improper posture?!

Perhaps I am wrong and perhaps there are libraries and schools with proper posters in place. I would love for you to prove me wrong! For you see, I want this to change. Our society needs this to change. We need a healthier world and simple posters offer a tiny foothold to a pathway of a better world.

The Weighty Consequences of Improper Posture and the Weight of the Human Head

"... the weight of the human head is only 12 pounds but when our posture is incorrect, the weight grows and our tension in our muscles that try to compensate grows."

~Easy Exercise

Simple Solutions - Tiny Investment - Big ROI

The various solutions for better posture all demand relatively tiny investments. Yet, the smallest investment and perhaps the biggest return is the poster that reminds us to sit up straight.

The posters sadly are often not promoted as the ROI is not there for the producer of the poster - but the return on investment for the school, library or company is clear. A simple poster is essential to working efficiently without harming our bodies.

Our back and our neck have valuable discs that serve us 24/7 and yet how often do we think about our posture?

It saddens me to see people hunched over and I know the weight of the human head is only 12 pounds but when our posture is incorrect, the weight grows and our tension in our muscles that try to compensate grows.

Back and neck problems plague the United States. We talk and the media hypes obesity but yet this national problem of improper posture is never mentioned.

If it keeps up, man will atrophy all his limbs but the push-button finger.

~Frank Lloyd Wright

Products and Posters to Help Resolve Our Computer Hunch

There are a number of products now available to help resolve our computer hunch. While all of these offer a high ROI, the highest ROI remains the posters.

Until recently, there is a new product that I believe is really exciting, it takes the computer desk to new levels - literally and figuratively. For you see it is a computer base that serves to raise or lower the computer station. This is fantastic as it allows you to stand, flex your knees, stand up straight rather than hunch over the terminal.

Case Studies and Videos

Since this article is all about the visual delights of motivational posters, very little time is spent on the videos of how to. This call to action is about incorporating posters to remind us to sit up straight.

Sit Up Straight - Walk Upright

The call to action would not be complete without a call to not only sit up straight but also to walk upright. Our body has processed and our body needs to be upright in order to be healthy.

Perfect World of Technology

So in a perfect world, every desktop computer, every notebook book computer would come with a poster to remind us and motivate us to treat our body right and sit and work upright.

In a perfect world, all smart phones would come with instructions of how to 1.) sit properly and also 2.) how to walk upright.

Oh, this sounds silly but look around and observe your co-workers or stealthy observe students attending class or flowing from and to the fitness club and see how many people have good posture. The result will surprise you.

Should all technology items come with instructions on proper posture for sitting and walking?

Nature says thou shalt keep the air, skate, swim, walk, ride, run. When you have worn out your shoes, the strength of the sole leather has passed into the fibre of your body. I measure your health by the number of shoes and hats and clothes you have worn out. He is the richest man who pays the largest debt to his shoemaker.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1851

It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.

~Albert Einstein

Fanatical About Exercise, Health and Our Posture

Ok, my exuberance I know overflows but I am being genuine. I truly believe tiny changes can change the world. Since you don't know me and perhaps we will never meet, to lend credibility to my argument, let's see what two renowned writers had to say about exercise and our health. Albert Einstein and Ralph Waldo Emerson both have identified the need for our humanity, for our health, we need exercise. To begin with a posture that simply reminds us to remain upright is a great starting point.

Investment in Company Ergonomics

What are your thoughts - should companies invest in ergonomic equipment and training posters?

Manage Technology

Your Call to Action

Encourage your school, library, workplace to install ergonomic posters.

Encourage technology companies to take a holistic view of instructional manuals and include posters to remind us that we rule when we have proper posture. Technology will destroy us unless we manage the opportunities that are before us.

I love that first downward facing dog or whatever pose although it does not look very ergonomic or even possible for humans!

      Poetryman6969,

I know Yoga has some amazing movements and the discs in our back need these stretches. The downward facing dog I think is one of the funniest looking positions. A couple of movies have spoofed that position - and rightfully so!

Thank you so much for stopping by.

Oh, my, I spend way too much time behind my computer and yet there is always so much more that needs attention and joy. The joy of HubPages always takes me away - my Calgon take me away I guess!

While watching a Dr. Oz segment, he recommended using a neck cushion to sit on, claiming this would help keep the back straight while at the computer. What do you think? Thanks. Voted up and sharing.

For sure sitting can make us slouch. As I read that I was acutely aware of how I was sitting and it made me sit up straight and tall.

      Great suggestions....

For me, I would find that uncomfortable but my sitting posture is good - my problem is the horizontal position I lay on the couch!

For those who tend to slouch when sitting, I think Dr. Oz makes a good point. However, first I would try to remind yourself throughout the day to double check and change your sitting position. There may be no need to purchase anything - for many, for most, I hope it is simply a matter of education and recognition it is a problem.

      PStrauibie48,

We all need an inner voice to remind us that we can do better. No slouching today for me - after 21 days, it will become a habit!

Thank you very much! Also, I greatly appreciate your blessings.

Thank you miss Kelly for writing about the ergonomics hub. I I'am great full to you. I am going to try the resting feet pedal on my roommate. He is suffering from knee pain. I am sure this will help. I will let you know how it goes later. You are fantastic. Your hub covers every detail for the front desk to have the proper posture while working with the computer. You did an amazig job.

      Hi Erorantes,

I think this is important for all office workers but for writers it is paramount. It is so easy to fall into bad posture when we are walking but when we are writing it is impossible.

We must literally take a step back each hour and stretch and check our posture.

If you are like me, I sit for hours without a break and I need to change that horrible routine and take care of my body by checking my posture.

Hi Kelly, What a wonderful hub and great pictures too. I love exercise and I've worked in the computer industry for many years. Proper posture is definitely important. I'm going to check out all your hubs. I'm definitely a fan!

      Easylearningweb,

Isn't it amazing how the computer just takes over our lives and attacks our posture? I am bound and determined to fight back with not just good posture but GREAT posture.

This was a fun hub to put together because in a former career I was appointed the risk manager. I feel these posters are pivotal to every corporate safety program .

I think it's wonderful hub because it brings about awareness for posture especially when using computers. Many many people just do not think about it. And it's so important to have good posture and exercise frequently.

      Easy Learning Web,

I agree - posture is critical to safety and I feel the ergonomics posters are not just educational but motivational too to remind staff/team members of the purpose of the back and neck discs. These tiny parts of our body are gems that we need to protect and need to be reminded to protect them.
