What Drives Someone to Become a Nurse?

There are many things that drive people to become a nurse. For some it is the excitement, different opportunities in different health care settings, and experiencing what life is about. For others, knowing that you will always have a job somewhere, doing something you think you will love is the motivator. There are a lot of people who are just plain caregivers at heart whether they are male or female.

Whatever the reasons are that people want to become a nurse, the opportunities for different specialty areas exist for their specific needs. There are a lot of people who are caregivers at heart whether they are male or female. Nursing can fulfill the need to take care of others.

For some nurses, whether they want to admit it or not, they are also fulfilling a personal need of their own. Some people due to personalities or past experiences need to fill needed and appreciated. For these people becoming a nurse fits that bill.

Nursing can be a very rewarding career. The problem is that it is hard to get accepted into nursing schools. Being driven to become a nurse will help when getting into a nursing program. People have to be willing to put a lot of their lives on hold to obtain the education that they need to become a nurse. They must be driven to want to become a nurse or they will not make it through the curriculum that is required.

Education for nursing is varied and covers so many areas that people feel they will never use. The issues are not just the core courses that you have to take but gaining an understanding of people. What people want, how they think, feel and the ideas that they may have is all part of nursing. Knowledge gained in elective classes can help people to see how diverse our world is. There are areas such as art as an elective for example. Now, you may ask what has art to do with nursing. It may be the one area that you can connect with a patient to help them.

People that really want to work as a nurse are driven to work toward that goal. Becoming a nurse is hard work that doesn’t end with graduation from nursing school. People in the nursing profession will have to be driven throughout their careers. Education has to continue as health care evolves. It is like we have heard said “if you snooze you lose” but it isn’t just nurses that loses. The people that they care for also lose. Good nurses are always driven to stay on top of changes.

      Nurses definitely bust the myth that you cant teach old dogs new tricks. Experienced nurses continue to learn, day after day.
