Facing The Lupus Giant: My Aromatherapy Journey To Healing
Wellness Lifestyle...in spite of chronic illness
In the last two hubs I have shared with you what led to my lupus diagnosis, as well as my herbal journey to healing my body. Today I will share with you my journey with essential oils, and becoming an Aromatherapy Consultant, sharing with others what has helped me in my journey with lupus, and sharing a wellness lifestyle with others.
During the course of my Herbalism studies, I had already began using essential oils very effectively, and decided to also get a certification as an Aromatherapy Consultant. I immersed myself in as many classes I could find, then doing more advanced studies at Aromahead Institute where I received certification in Aromatherapy for Natural Living and as an Aromatherapy Consultant. I still continue to learn as much as I can, and to keep abreast of new studies that come out relating to the sometimes controversial use of essential oils.
I can make what with essential oils??
In this hub I will share with you some of the items I have made, using essential oils, and that have helped me in my journey with lupus. Please, feel free to try out the blends, and let me know if you do, and how you like them. I appreciate the comments.
Lupus and memory issues
As many as half of all people with lupus describe feelings of confusion, fatigue, memory loss, and difficulty expressing their thoughts. This collection of symptoms is termed cognitive dysfunction, although many people with lupus call it "lupus fog."
Chances are if you have lupus, you experience lupus fog from time to time. I sure did. I did a lot of research into herbs and essential oils that would help with memory and found that rosemary had been tested and proven effective for memory issues.
Rosemary was already thought to improve memory by the ancient Greeks and, according to the Herb Society, has been seen as a symbol of love and loyalty and to ward off evil spirits.
I decided to research some more and found other herbs and essential oils that are also effective in helping with memory, such as clary sage and basil.
Some days I need basic help. Other days I need major help with concentration, so I came up with two different blends....one for memory and the other for focus and concentration (my Brain Boost blend).
Essential Oil blends for Memory and Focus
This essential oil blend is great for memory and focus. It contains essential oils which have been documented to enhance memory and focus, such as rosemary, le

Essential Oil blend for Lupus Headaches
Lupus Headache Blend
Compared with the general population, people with lupus may be twice as likely to experience headaches that may feel like migraines or be milder. There are commonly referred to as lupus headaches. The features of lupus headaches are similar to migraines and may be seen more often in people who also have Raynaud’s phenomenon. However, headaches can also be caused by vasculitis, a symptom of active lupus due to inflammation of the blood vessels.
One of the easiest ways for me to get relief from the headache was to inhale the essential oils, so I created an inhaler with a special blend specifically for the headache. The headache blend consists of 5 drops each peppermint and frankincense, 3 drops lavender and 2 drops eucalyptus.
Bonus Blend: If I travel or have to go into doctors' offices or the hospital, I use this special "dirty air" blend. This blend consists of 4 drops lemon, 4 drops cedar wood, 4 drops eucalyptus and 3 drops balsam fir needle.
Hair Growth Serum and Shampoo
Essential oil blend for Lupus hair loss
Lupus causes widespread inflammation that usually involves your skin — particularly on your face and scalp. Lupus can cause the hair on your scalp to gradually thin out, although a few people lose clumps of hair. Loss of eyebrow, eyelash, beard and body hair also is possible.
Shortly after I was diagnosed I developed bald patches in the back of my head. I got to a point where I had to cut my hair very short, after I discovered how to get my hair to regrow. Vanity would not allow me to wear a wig, so I did some more research, and discovered many herbs and essential oils that are great for re-growing hair, and designed a blend for myself.
In addition to the serum, I also designed an herbal shampoo that would work together with my serum to stimulate hair growth.
This shampoo had Castile soap, and peppermint essential oil as the base, with several of the essential oils from my serum, such as rosemary, clary sage and basil.
Hypo-Thyroid Essential oil blend
One of the first factors I noticed after being diagnosed with lupus was that my thyroid was also being affected. In order to support my thyroid in a healthy manner, I started working on a blend to support the thyroid, and combat hypo-thyroidism. It consists of essential oils that are known to benefit the thyroid gland. This blend can help stimulate the brain and endocrine system to balance the production of Thyroxin, stimulate and oxygenate the pituitary and hypothalamus. Myrtle has been researched for its effects on glandular imbalances including thyroid, while Sandalwood can stimulate and oxygenate the pituitary and hypothalamus.
The essential oils in my thyroid blend are:

It will be applied directly to the thyroid area, as well as to the area on the bottom of the feet that correspond to the thyroid.

Firming Facial Serum for lupus skin issues
Approximately two-thirds of people with lupus will develop some type of skin disease, called cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Skin disease in lupus can cause rashes or sores (lesions), most of which will appear on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck, arms, and legs, and even on the scalp.
As you saw from my post, My Lupus Diagnosis, I had a severe rash on my face. I was determined to get the rash under control, to avoid scarring, as well as to slow down the aging that I noticed my skin was undergoing.
After extensive research and testing, I created my power Facial serum blend made with helichrysum and frankincense, in addition to lavender, cypress, myrrh, sandalwood, and geranium rose in a rosehip-infused olive oil. It turned out that this blend was also great for scars, toning, firming, eczema, and the malar rash for which it was designed.

Joint Pain associated with Lupus
Joint pain, or arthritis, is experienced by 95 percent of people with lupus at some time during the course of their disease. Joints may be painful, red, and warm. They may swell. Morning stiffness may also be felt. Lupus arthritis often occurs on both sides of the body at the same time. It's most often felt in the wrists, the small joints of the hands, and the elbows, knees and ankles.
Much of my joint pain was in my wrists, knees, hips and neck. The blend that I developed was designed to help with the joint pain, in addition to the nerve pain that I also experienced from the severe nerve damage relating to peripheral neuropathy.
My base for much of my essential oil blend is the trauma oil blend of Arnica, Calendula and St. John's Wort, infused in olive oil. I have even published a with some of my favorite essential oil blends with trauma oil. short book

Frankincense, a critical ingredient in my fight against lupus
In all my research Frankincense kept popping up as being great for DNA repair. Although I had heard of Frankincense (who hasn't, really?), I had not paid too much attention to its benefits. It has, however, become an important part of my treatment protocol.
I bathe with a soap made with Frankincense and Myrrh. I also created a lotion using frankincense and myrrh. My hormone balancing blend also contains frankincense. It is the one essential oil that I believe everyone should have in their medicine cabinet.
