Fall Preparation - Featuring Essential Oils

Changing Weather

Fall is upon us, and with it come changing leaves, blustery days, and warm drinks. In many regards, it's a marvelous time of the year. We curl up under blankets, enjoy long walks in the crisp air, and throw pumpkin or apple into everything we make. However, not every part of the season is inherently wonderful.

The fall season brings on dropping temperatures and renewed possibilities for sickness. Allergies flare up and germ exposure increases as children go back to school. The cooler weather also increases our chances of getting a cold or a sinus infection.

These negative aspects of autumn hardly outweigh the positive aspects, but they do put a damper on them. It's hard to fully enjoy the benefits of the season when you're constantly blowing your nose and feeling congested. This takes away from the overall experience and is a real bummer for those who love fall.


As much as it might hurt, let's begin with the negative aspects of fall. It's hard to believe they exist, but since they do, they must be addressed. Let's start with allergies.

Fall allergies don't get nearly as much attention as spring ones, but they're just as real. They're also just as problematic. They cause the same symptoms, such as sneezing and sniffling, which detracts from your ability to fully enjoy the season.

If you suffer from allergies in autumn, you're all too aware of how real they are. You've also probably used over-the-counter medicines to treat and prevent them. These might work for you, which is great. They also might not, though. If the latter is true for you (or the former, because why not?), then you might want to consider trying essential oils.

Taming the Beast

There are several essential oils that could help you deal with your symptoms, as well as multiple ways in which to utilize them. Diffusing them is perhaps the most popular way, but you can also make lotions or even add some of them to your food. Finding out which way works best for you is simply a matter of trial and error, though be sure to read all warnings before trying anything. You could also speak with an aromatherapist, essential oil expert, or herbalist if you're new to oils and leery about using them.

One of the best oils for autumn allergies (or any allergies) is eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is a natural menthol, which is the stuff you find in vapor rubs. The oil works to break up the phlegm and mucus that's causing you to feel stuffed up. It opens the nasal passage and allows you to breathe freely once again. Not to mention, it will help relieve chest congestion.

Another great option for allergy help is peppermint. This little beauty has multiple, surprising uses. While it might be well-known for its ability to freshen breath, peppermint is lee well-known for its ability to clear your sinuses and reduce inflammation. This leads to a reduction in sneezing and coughing, which is something any allergy-sufferer should be happy to hear.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

One of the best things about oils used for allergies is their ability to be utilized for other purposes as well. Many allergy symptoms are similar to those of the flu or common cold, which means the same oils will come in handy if you or a family member happens to get sick.

In addition to eucalyptus and peppermint, lemon is a marvelous option when you're preparing to face the cold and flu season. Lemon holds anti-inflammatory properties and can help decrease phlegm production, which leads to less hacking and discomfort. More importantly, lemon can help prevent these issues from happening in the first place. If there's one preventative step you take this fall, it should be drinking a glass of water with a drop of lemon in it every day.

Something Smells Amazing

In order to get the most out of autumn, it's wise for one to be fully prepared. This includes preparation for both the good and the bad. While most people are willing to start with the good, I figured it would be beneficial to save the best for last.

One of the most delightful aspects of fall is the abundance of smells that often greet our noses. Many of these aromas come from baked goods. Unfortunately, not all of us have enough time to bake, so we're forced to find other ways to fill our homes with those scrumptious smells.

One such way is to plant potpourri around the house. This is a solid choice if you want a lingering fragrance. Another option is through the use of fall-themed candles. The options are vast and most of them smell lovely when they're burning. A final option would be using essential oils in an aromatherapy diffuser. This method is similar to candles, but you get the added bonus of possible health benefits.

Essential Autumn

The amount of existing essential oils is impressive, to say the least. When you narrow it down to the fall-themed ones, though, the list shrinks. Here are some of the best oils to put in your diffuser if you're looking to spread the magic of fall throughout the house.

  • clove
  • cinnamon
  • cardamom
  • orange
  • citrus
  • ginger
  • nutmeg

Almost all these smells are derived from spices, which is generally what we think of when fall aromas are brought up. These smells are also often featured in potpourri mixes and as aspects of autumn-themed candles. They're the heart and soul of the season.

Invest Wisely

Before you go out and buy a bundle of oils, do some research. Not all oils are created equal. High-grade, therapeutic oils are more expensive, but they're also more effective. These oils go through a rigorous process and have to meet certain, high standards before they're released to the world.

If and when you do decide to begin using essential oils, try not to go too overboard. As I already mentioned, they get to be expensive. It would be unfortunate if you purchased fifteen different oils just to find out you only like one of them. If possible, try before you buy.

Trying isn't always possible, though, so what are you supposed to do then? Stick to the basics. Peppermint, eucalyptus, and lemon would be an excellent starting point. These three oils are beautifully versatile, which is a quality you should try to look for when you're just starting out.

Buying oils that can be used for multiple purposes means you're getting more bang for your buck. Be smart about what you're buying and invest in good oils. Be sure to have some fun with it, too, though. After all, essential oils are supposed to help you feel happy, healthy, and full of life.
