When you start doing something active with your family it makes total sense and has many health benefits. First of all, obesity and other health issues and risks are tied directly to a sedentary lifestyle. Simply put, exercise increases our energy, eases stress and just makes us feel good. All it takes just to get us moving for an adult is at least 30 minutes and children about 60 minutes of physical activity. O f course the more the better within reason and time.
In order for exercise to be introduced as a part of family life, parents need to limit the time spent watching TV, surfing the internet and playing video games not only for their children but themselves too. In the beginning it may seem like "how is this going to work"? A good idea would be to make a schedule on the days and times the family will have exercise together and stick with it as if were mandatory, like going to school or to your job. Structure is good and after maybe a few complaints things will fall into place.
Activities and Exercise
To get started with family exercise, have after dinner walks or bike riding. Let the kids bring some of their ideas up which will keep them interested and not bored. We all talk about saving and investing in your child's future, well think of family exercise as investing in your child's health as well as your own.
Suggestions for Activities
- 1. Drive less- walk to the store, park or library.
- 2. Work together- wash the car by hand.
- 3. Gardening- Keep that curb appeal by weeding the yard.
- 4. Sports- Set up games of Badminton, croquet. Play Hop scotch, four square and kickball.
- 5. Venture Out- Go the Zoo or near-by park trails for an easy and fun hike.
I've only touched the tip of the iceberg because each family no matter where they live or how much money they make, it only takes a little commitment, time and maybe some imagination to be on a path to a healthy, happy and fit family. Who knows if others see your family being active they may jump on the bandwagon and a family exercise revolution could be in the works.
