Why Fast?

Fasting is when you make a choice not to eat food for a set period of time.

You may decide to do a 24hr fast or more or you may choose to do intermittent fasting, which is fasting for a day then eating for a few days then back to fasting. You may also stop eating at 6pm and not resume eating for 12 hrs. This is also fasting and gives your digestive system a rest.

The benefits of fasting have been well documented and it is becoming more popular as people realise the health benefits that can be gained from fasting.

I have been fasting on a regular basis for the past 10yrs and have had great results both physically and mentally.

I try to fast at least 1-2 days a month and usually it is a water fast. On the days I fast I make sure to keep busy so I don’t have time to think too much about eating. I also go to bed early so when I am asleep I don’t think about food.

The first few hours you may find the most difficult but it does become easier as the day goes on.

I always feel less bloated and my mind more clear and it also decreases my blood pressure quite significantly. There is no doubt in my mind that fasting can improve your health.

Water Fasting And It’s Benefits

Water fasting, is a type of fasting when for a set period of time, the only think you consume is water. When you practise water fasting, you take in zero calories.

How much water should I drink?
60 – 70% of our body is WATER. So, it is extremely important that you drink the correct amount of water, which should not be less than 8 – 10 glasses per day. This is to support the cleansing process.

Juice Fasting

Juicing fruits and vegetables can help give you any minerals and nutrients you might have missed out on in winter. Juicing your fruits and vegetables allows for those nutrients to distribute throughout your body much faster. Another benefit of juicing is that it gives your digestive system a little break. Juice fasting isn't necessarily meant for long term use as it entails a lack of fiber to the body, but it's great to use for a few days at a time for starters. Below is a juice recipe that is sure to boost energy levels.

• 1/2 pineapple chopped
• 3 -4 mint leaves
• 1 apple diced
• 4 medium carrots

16:8 Intermittant Fasting

The 16:8 way of fasting is one of the most popular fasting methods that can be easily fitted into daily life. Simply, you only eat 2–3 meals during an eight hour time period and then fast for the remaining 16 hours.

‍An example could be to stop eating after 6pm, and wait till 10am to have breakfast the following day. Start eating again for 8 hours, and continue with the cycle. You can

alter the time depending on your schedule—you may prefer to eat earlier or later each day

This type of fasting is recommended for most people and is easy to follow.

Alternate Day Fasting

Alternate day fasting is eating one day and fasting the next. On the days you eat you can eat healthily or eat what you want. Many people try to stick with 500 calories on the eating days and this makes it easier to loose weight if this is the reason you are fasting. The weight loss is much the same whether you consume the calories at lunch or dinner.

Many people find this an easier way to fast than a set number of days or restriction of calories every day.

Studies also show that Alternate Day Fasting and restricting calories every day both help reduce body inflammation and also belly fat.
