Fitness Video Games Review

Updated on April 19, 2013

There are a number of fitness video games available that can be played on either the Xbox 360 or the Wii. But the questions is, “can a video game help you to burn calories and help increase your fitness?”

Well, the answer seems to be a resounding yes.

Fitness video games give you the option of being able to work out in the privacy of your own home. You don’t have to pay for expensive gym memberships or find the time to get in your car and drive to your local fitness center. Everything you need is in your home and you can exercise at any time of the day that suits your schedule.

Not all fitness video games will give you the same results. Some are more games than fitness focused but there are definitely enough different types of programs to not only keep you interested but get you active.

Both the Wii Fitness and the Xbox 360 Kinect have an assortment of different types of programs.

You can enjoy such fitness games as Zumba where you bring the party right to your living room. Or how about doing a Gold's Gym cardio workout? Maybe you like yoga or perhaps you like to do sports such as tennis or bowling. All these different types of workouts are available with fitness video games.

YourShape Fitness Evolved

YourShape Fitness Evolved for the Xbox 360 Kinect is designed to be controller-free. Built around a camera with depth sensors, you will be able to perform your exercise routine while the sensor tracks your every move. You will also be able to choose a personal trainer to help you meet your fitness goals and you will never do the same program twice.

How you use the program is up to you. You can get the help of a personal trainer or you can take a class such as Yoga, Martial Arts or Tai Chi. There are even fun mini-games like dancing and target practice.

One of the other benefits of this program is that it can give you feedback to help you correct your form. As well you can track your progress and even share it online if you desire.

New U Fitness First Yoga and Pilates

If you love doing a yoga or pilates workout then you will love this fitness game for Wii Fitness. Not only can you trim your waistline but this video game can help you with your specific exercise goals. You can develop body strength well improving your posture and overall fitness.

The New U Mind Body Yoga & Pilates Workout has 115 different exercises that are demonstrated by real fitness trainers. You also can get real-time feedback with Wii Motion Plus. As well the video is compatible with the Wii Balance Board.

EA Sports Active 2

This fitness game uses the Kinect system and is a great way to get your daily exercise. The EA Sports Active 2 with Total Body Tracking includes a heart rate monitor that provides constant on screen monitoring to capture the intensity of your workout.

Because there is no hand held controller you have complete freedom while doing your workout but still have the Kinect Motion Camera track your every move. You will then be able to chart your progress and track your data.

With this program you will also be able to customize your workouts from 70 different games and activities. You can build muscle with foundational exercises or shake up your exercise program with activities such as mountain biking, dodgeball or boxing.

Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board

If you are looking for a program than can suggest a number of activities then you might want to try the Wii Fit Plus.  You can choose the amount of time you want to spend on your workout or even select the area you want to work on to improve your fitness.

You can choose to run an obstacle course, zoom across a beach on your Segway or do some strength training.  You will have so much fun that the time will quickly pass as you burn calories and get fit.

You can choose from aerobics, yoga, muscle toning exercises as well as juggling, skateboarding, snowball fight, a cannonball-evading event or even a balance game that combines both your physical and mental abilities.

The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout

You are probably aware of the Biggest Loser TV show, but did you know there is an Xbox 360 fitness game called the Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout?  The neat thing about this fitness video game is that it has been developed to evolve with your exercise routine.

You get the trainers featured on the TV show plus you also get more than 125 exercises that you can play with two to four players.  It’s a great way to have some fun with the whole family while getting in shape.

You can choose a workout program for your entire body using core, cardio, yoga and cardio boxing.  You can even be part of an online community and compete in weekly challenges.

XBox 360 with Kinect

If you already own the Xbox 360 then adding the Kinect system is a great way to play games or workout. You don’t need a hand held control as every one of your moves is caught using the Kinect technology which includes four microphones for voice recognition and a motion camera for body recognition.

With the Xbox 260 Kinect you simply step in front of the sensor and it will recognize all your gestures. No more using a hand held controller! This is perfect for exercise as it removes the last barrier between you and your workout.

Best of all the Kinect works with every XBox 360 console, so even if you have an older model you can start your exercise program today with one of the many fun fitness video games!

Wii Fitness

Nintendo’s Wii has attracted plenty of players to the world of video games.  By adding a fitness program you will no longer have an excuse not to exercise.  The Wii has many other game choices including Wii Sports, Wii Fit and the new Super Mario Bros game.

You can use the Wii console just using your television for single play or you can hook it up to the internet and then you get a chance to connect with players anywhere in the world.

As well with the Wii you will be able to go online and download new and classic games, stream TV episodes or watch movies through Netflix.  You can even surf the net all from your living room.

Cyberbike Magnetic Edition

The Cyberbike Cycling Sports is first video game to use a stationary bike designed exclusively for Nintendo Wii. The game is suitable for all fitness levels. Using a high-quality bicycle accessory has three different modes which include story, fitness and multiplayer. Cyberbike Cycling Sports uses an environmentally conscious theme which challenges players to pedal to clean up the planet Cyclo. You will be able to use four different modified bicycles including a submarine, wagon and helicopter to rid the planet of pollution. This is a great game to enjoy with the entire family.
