Games and activities for children; outdoors and indoors
There was a time when a majority of the people on this earth were fit. They led a life on the hands of nature when nothing was artificial or adulterated. There was no any invention of man that was harmful to any creature then. But, over time, man’s intelligence didn’t allow him to abide by nature’s rules and he started exploring the world around him. Ultimately he discovered many things and started making inventions of his own. Even if they were highly beneficial for him, most of them had hidden adverse effects that slowly started crawling upon him.
Of the highly entertaining man-made gadgets, T.V. and a computer system have become inevitable in a household. Besides providing knowledge, they’ve got some addictive properties that attract people to sit beside them continuously for a long period. Munching something during this time also adds up to this kind of lifestyle. This sedentary lifestyle along-with unhealthy eating habits tends man to lose his body fitness thereby leading to obesity. Childrenare becoming the poor victims to this kind of lifestyle and the call to physical training is gaining more attention and demand today.
These games are a set of activities that aim for the overall fitness of body and mind. They entertain children as well as help them build their bodies healthy and strong. There are so many activities that can improve cardiovascular strength, endurance and self-confidence among children. You can organize these activities if you’ve got several children in and around your premises. Children would find interest when they are divided into groups or teams rather than doing it alone. Let’s discuss some of them that are very popular.
Children get enjoyment plus a squat by doing this activity. Relays are often fun games that arouse curiosity and competition among the participants. Different kinds of relays are possible for different age groups. If you are aiming for a larger age group, make each child run for a longer distance before doing 5 to 6 sit-ups. Otherwise let him run for a moderate distance before another member on the team starts run. Rewarding the team that wins also would increase the enthusiasm of children, thereby elevating the team spirit.
Kho-Kho is a traditional game involving two teams of chasers and defenders. Playing this game improves agility of children as they have to run quickly from the sitting position. Each team has 9 members in which there are 2 innings of 9 minutes each. Chasers team sit in a row in the ground with each member seated alternately. Defenders may send 2 or 3 members to the ground who are chased by a chaser running in a particular direction. The chaser can pass the job of chasing to another sitter sitting (near the target) facing the opposite direction by touching him and saying “Kho”. He would tag the defender and that defender is eliminated. 1st innings completes when all the defenders are tagged and the total time played is noted. The teams are interchanged and 2nd innings starts. Whichever team tags the opponents in the shortest possible time is declared as the winner.
3. Rope jump
In this activity, children are instructed to form a circle facing inwards. An adult with a rope standing in the center of the circle start whirling it a little high in the air and the children have to jump over it. Those who touch the rope with their foot or leg should be eliminated in the first round (1 minute). Again start over with the remaining children and stop when all the children have been eliminated. Playing some music also can raise the momentum of this activity.
Divide the children to form 4 teams each consisting of 2 to 3 children. Start with 4 packs of playing cards that are scattered all around. Each member of the team has to move all over to pick and arrange them sorted in descending order for Spades, Clubs, Hearts and Diamonds. The team that takes the shortest time to finish this job wins. Both mind and body gets involved in this fun activity.
5. Cycle racing
Children of the same age group are made to stand in their track with a bicycle. Provide some gap between each track as they can make turns during the run. At the whistle, children should start cycling to and fro. Whoever finishes the run first is declared as the winner. Cycling gives a complete shake to thigh and legs and gives perfect body shape. Cycling is a good exercise for kids too.

Yoga is ancient Science that helps in coordinating body parts, thereby making it flexible. Yoga training gives strength to the bones, increases blood circulation and removes body stiffness. Childhood Yoga practice empowers body and the soul and enhances concentration, keenness, confidence and enthusiasm among children. The main advantage with doing Yoga from childhood itself is that children won’t find it difficult to bend for making different body postures as their body is already flexible. Continuing Yoga for a long run make them healthy adults fully fit in all aspects. Now there are Yoga classes being organized in schools, after-school activities and Yoga centers. Reaping the benefits of Yoga is highly beneficial for your child.
Kids Yoga is also gaining popularity today. Some simple Yoga poses can mould the body shape of kids. In some schools, Yoga classes are a 'must' for kids.
After the intense work-outs, some warm-ups can relieve the pains in the body. Aerobic style warm-ups or simple pulse raiser would work. Jogging, hopping, skipping, front crawling, breast stroke and walking with arms held in swimming mode are some of the warm-ups meant for children. Dynamic stretching would be better than static, as children will not have the patience to stand still continuously for a long period of time. Those who do weight-lifting should spend considerable time for stretching as it induces muscle pains more.
