Three Easy Ways to Use Lemons In Your Diet

When Life Hands You Lemons......

Tips From the Nutrition Consultant

Using lemons in the diet may seem scary to some people. They are SOUR. Who wants that? For the longest time, I never had a clue what to do with lemons! I didn't even make my own lemonade! Too much work!

Now, that I'm wiser, but not that much older, I've leaned three easy ways to incorporate lemons into my daily and weekly nutritional regimen!

1.) Daily Detox

I have to mention this first, since I start my day with this!

Using lemons mixed in water first thing in the morning provides the body with a good dose of detoxifying power! By this, I mean that the lemon juice will work with the liver to help remove various nasties out of you. Drinking this first thing in the morning, before ANYTHING else, allows your metabolism to get a proper jump start.

  • Take 1/3 of a lemon and squeeze into about 8-12 ounces of fresh water. You should be able to TASTE the lemon in the water, if you cannot, you have too much water.

2.) Salad and Vegetable ZING!

I eat a LOT of salads and often get bored with the same old taste. You will find me adding dried fruits, fresh fruits, crackers, guacamole, beans, and every other kind of "topping" to keep my taste buds on edge!

I use lemons to add ZING to my salads!

  • Simply squeeze 1/3-1/2 (depending on the size of your salad) onto your greens! The lemons add some vitamin C which will help you to absorb the iron better, especially if you are eating darker leafy greens.

I use lemons to add ZING to my vegetables!

  • Again, squeeze about 1/2 of a lemon onto either freshly steamed vegetables, or sautéed vegetables. The best vegetables that I find taste better with lemons are broccoli and cauliflower. You may want to experiment to see what you like best.

3.) Add Life to Your Fish!

Although I do not eat fish anymore, I still get wild caught fish for my family to eat on occasion! I have found in the past though, that oily fish taste so much better when they are either given some lemon juice or have slices of lemons added to them after cooking.

  • Know that by adding lemons or lemon juice to your oily fish, you are allowing your body to absorb the oils in your body so much better. The lemon juice acts as a "carrier." Those oils are quite beneficial for your heart.
  • Squeeze lemon juice on your fish once you are done cooking it. Another option is to add actual lemon slices to the fish for taste AND garnish! Hey, we can all be "gourmet" cooks, right? A tip to go with the lemon juice: add some fresh parsley for more vitamin C!

Other uses.....

There are hundreds of ways to use lemons in the diet!!! These are simply the 3 main ways that I use them! Other edible uses are:

  • Homemade lemonade!
  • Using lemon "zest" in recipes
  • Adding them to your Green Juices! (as in using them in a juicer)
  • Homemade lemon pie, cake, cookies.....need I say more?

In addition, lemons are GREAT antibacterial agent and can be used to sanitize countertops and bathroom sinks! No chemicals needed!

A Lemon Does a Body Good!

Lemons are very ALKALINE! Yes, even though they are "citrus" fruits and are sour as can be, they are very alkaline in our bodies, helping us fight an overly acidic place. In other words, using lemon juice daily can help you fight against inflammation!

Lemons are also loaded with:

  • Vitamin C

as well as.....

  • Calcium
  • Potassium
  • Folate (and other B vitamins)

Start incorporating lemons in your diet today!

Here's to your good health!

We use lemons in most of the ways you suggest, vandynegl. Whenever I use lemon in the kitchen, I use the remaining shell to rub any left over lemon pulp on my hands. Helps to make them a little nicer. :)

Hi LongTimeMother, Thank you for your response!

Really? I'm curious about using them directly on my hands! I was thinking today that I would mix lemon juice with some almond oil to make a nice hand/body oil, but never heard of using lemon pulp directly! Please explain! :)

    • LongTimeMother profile image

Once the juice has been squeezed from the lemon, you are left with the skin and a bit of pulp and juice attached. After I've finished cooking, I just rub the soft pulp-side over my fingers and hands before the lemon skin heads for the compost.

Just leave it on for a while before washing your hands. If ever your hands get stained or chapped, after gardening for instance, the lemon treatment can help remove the stains and make your hands look nicer. (And smell nicer too, if you've been chopping garlic.)

I also use aloe vera straight from the plant, but the inside of a lemon has its own unique role. :)

Thank you LongTimeMother! Great idea! It's funny you mentioned aloe Vera from the plant because I do the same thing....my oldest son loves to use it for bug bites....I think he thinks it's fascinating getting it directly from the plant!

Adding lemons to our diets, especially fresh lemon, is a tried and true way to benefit our health. One of our favorite summertime drinks is lemonade with homegrown sweet leaf and frozen blueberries to make it ice cold.

We used to eat lemons everyday but since moving recently, we're out of our normal routine. This Hub reminded me to get back to using lemons! We have Key limes here which taste great and are healthy. I often use them on salads, but I plan to try the daily morning cleansing lemon drink starting tomorrow. : ) Thanks!

      vandynegl,

AHHH, I've been trying to get over to you for days! Forgive me, dear :-)

I love this article! I actually love lemons, if I made it a habit to keep them in the house I would certainly use them more. I did not know about the cleansing benefits and I will be attempting to work that in. Also, I haven't made homemade lemonade in a while and when I did it was awesome, but I do remember putting a lot of sugar in it; what's your opinion about how healthy of a choice is the lemonade in comparison to how much sugar is in there... is it still better to drink the lemonade despite the sugar? I'm looking for a certain answer :-)

Wonderful article... I'd stay and visit, but I must run and get some lemons!

      Up, useful, awesome and interesting!

Hi Cat, I know.....I've been off the computer for a few days and have been trying to play "catch up" with all of the awesome articles that you write!!

I have a lot of people ask me questions about sugar in their lemonade and I guess I would have to say that there isn't a certain amount to add.....of course, the sugar kind of defeats the purpose of the lemons, but having lemonade every once in a while would be okay. One person responded that they put frozen blueberries in their lemonade. I think this would add a little more natural sugar to it and make it more sweet to where not that much "added" sugar would be needed. It would have to be a taste preference.

On the other hand, I don't recommend adding artificial sugar though because this does more harm than good. I AM curious to know what another type of "sweetener" such as honey....would be like. Might have to give it a try!

      Thank you for reading! :)

      vandynegl,

Oh don't worry about coming my way... I would never be offended at all, most of my stuff is just useless and silly, you, you are more productive :-)

I like the idea of adding something else to the lemonade that would help sweetening it... I'll have to experiment and what a perfect season for it!

Yes, that whole artificial sweetnere thing, I'm working on now. I'm guilty as charged... but I'm just really beginning to understand there are alternatives.

If I come up with any mouth watering Lemonade creations... I'll be sure to let you know and you can do the same :-)

It was good to see you and I won't be a stranger!

I have actually planted a Meyers Lemon tree in our backyard as well as an orange tree. This year will be the first crop. Can't wait for it to grow large and give us bumper crops. A lady at the gym gave us excess from her tree so when I found one to plant, I was delighted. I love starting my day with lemon and water + all the other ways you mentioned. Most go on our compost pile after use, but occasionally I will put one down the garbage disposal to freshen things up. Up, useful and interesting votes.

Hi Peggy W, That is awesome that you were able to plant the fruit trees! I don't think we can grow those in our area. I like the idea of putting one in the garbage disposal to freshen things up.....I have found myself rubbing a freshly squeezed lemon on my counters at time......antibacterial agent and all! Thanks for reading!

The lemons we down here in Georgia are bigger than most oranges. I'm pleased to find out how beneficial to our bodies they are. Besides, I like to put a slice in my Corona instead of the traditional lime wedge. :)

Fantastic hub. I grew up in a Greek and Italian household and my Mom who was Greek basically used lemon in 99% of all her dishes. To this day I use it on veggies, salads, many meat dishes and always on chicken, rice etc... However I did not know about the health benefits until I read your hub so this is great. Thank you, voted up and shared on Twitter.

I enjoy using lemon often, and these are some good suggestions. Lemon juice is also good to squeeze over foods such as avocado and apples to prevent or slow down the browning that naturally occurs once they are cut up. Thanks for sharing these tips with us.

Very useful hub. I've long time incorporated lemon in my diet. It's a staple in my house. :) I squeeze it in my water, drink it with tea, put it in my soup, etc. I do it even when I'm flying and happy to note that I've influence my fellow Flight Attendants in doing the same. We tend to ignore this wonderful fruit. However, I believed in the many benefits that we get from it.

Great, useful hub. Up and sharing. Thanks.
