What Are Stretch Marks? Why Do I Have Them?

As mentioned earlier, stretch marks, also called striae, are a type of scar tissue that forms within the dermis during periods of rapid growth, weight gain, and increases in body mass.

These changes may be due to pregnancy or other conditions which stimulate the production of hormones such as cortisol and estrogen. And although anyone can develop stretch marks, most women will get them on their breasts, thighs, hips, abdomen, buttocks, and/or lower back; especially during puberty and/or pregnancy.

They appear as red, purple or pink striae (meaning stripes) within the top two layers of skin. Over time, striae fade to a silvery, off white color. Although striae are more or less a normal skin reaction to dramatic hormonal fluctuations, most folks consider them an aberration. Many of them, especially women, are constantly looking for treatments or remedies that will eliminate or significantly reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Correct, but you can certainly be rid of the "appearance" of them. Same with any blemish of the skin, there are ways to hide and reduce the appearance of it.

Once you have stretch marks, you have them for good. They may lighten and fade, but they are always there. You will never be "rid" of them.
