Getting Healthy is not Rocket Science
Eat Less- Move More
I am a typical middle aged American male and have hypertension and Type II diabetes. My conditions may be attributed to lack of exercise, poor eating habits and a gift inherited in my genetic heritage. My mom has Type II and her mom had full blown diabetes that wasn't discovered until she had actually gone into a diabetic coma in her early 80's. The same is true with hypertension from my mothers family. Thanks to modern medicine and a sensible diet along with a regular exercise routine both of my conditions are improving.
I grew up as a farm boy. We worked hard everyday. The days were long and the work physical so we never had to worry about adding extra pounds even though our diet consisted of mainly breads, meat and potatoes. Junk food was unheard of and there were never potato chips or sugary cereals in our cupboards. Sure, we had the jellies and jams to fill those biscuits mom made almost every morning. There weren't any McDonalds, Burger King Restaurants and even if we had of had access to these, we never went through a drive through to get our daily dose of high calorie burgers, fries, soft drinks or milk shakes. Those opportunities were rare and to be honest some what of an extravagance to be indulged only on the weekend.
As time progressed and we had a family, fast food became readily accessible and like most American towns, we had our share of Pizza Huts, burger joints and our grocery list began to include multiple snacks that contained sugar and salt in gargantuan proportions. Soon we we junk food addicts and wolfed down bags of chips, those damnable Little Debbie cakes, and tons of Oreo cookies. We seemed to take it in stride when our pants no longer fit after all the newer britches had elastic waist bands and we deceived ourselves thinking we were a 36 waist when actually a 40 would have been the real size.
After going to our family doctor we were given PILLS! "YOU NOW HAVE HIGH BlOOD PRESSURE," the doctor informs me, "have this Rx filled and "Your blood glucose levels are too high. Keep a close check and lose some weight" he tells us as we exit the office. His admonitions go into one ear and out the other but on the next visit with a routine blood lab, the sugar hasn't gone away and the prescription pad is pulled and a new Rx written for 'MORE PILLS."
I'm sure many have undergone the scenario described above but there is hope! Recently, my insurance company which I cannot name, began to utilize health coaching. Without fail, every two weeks a RN would call asking questions relative to our health and if there were any concerns. A further step was initiated whereby telephonics are now being used to record in real time the statistics of our health. Each day at a set time, we log on with our tablet and take our blood pressure which is hooked into the tablet and an instant reading is sent and recorded. Blood glucose is taken while fasting and logged manually into the tablet. This is a 6 month program and a direct hookup provided by the insurance company along with the measuring devices necessary.
This approach may seem extreme if not somewhat inconvenient but already there has been positive results. My glucose levels have been in the normal range for several weeks. My blood pressure is normal and I have been regularly exercising and have lost 10 pounds. Maybe simply by being accountable has added to the success along with a conscious effort. Millions, if not billions of dollars are spent each year on diets, books on diets, all kinds of strange exercise machines are touted to insure a great looking physique and a six pack in only a few weeks.
The truth of the matter is not rocket science! One man said it so well, "We are killing ourselves with a knife, fork and a spoon!" Once we admit we are our own worst enemy and decide to do something proactive, we will then be able to do so. We have all watched as the Biggest Loser reality show proves weight loss and getting a healthy body require taking charge of our bodies. Moving more and eating right. The participants who are obese in the extreme have all but in a few instances lost weight gained muscle and are by far more healthy than when they began the program.
We can all learn from their experience and the choice remains a personal one. Once we commit and make the choice, the road to successful results are within our grasp. If you are one who may be over weight or have Type II diabetes, a little effort and honesty will go a long way to improving your health.
